The Andalucia region

The Costa de la Luz-the coast of light-epitomises it´s name-you just need to look at the varying changes in the light from sunrise to sunset to fully appreciate how it got his name. The ever changing colours of the Atlantic from aquablue in the summer to angry grey in the winter ,the shimmer of the sun on the sea, the soft paleness of the sandy beaches and vibrant colours of sails racing across the water.Sunny, crisp winters days and hazy summer days with astonishingly beautiful sunsets. The Costa de la Luz is laidback, easygoing, warm and welcoming.

Cadiz, just 15 minutes away, can boast to being the oldest city in Europe. Columbus set sail from these waters to conquer the new world.Cadiz has an intrigueing old part or "casco antigua", the walled part of the city, crammed with weathered buildings, narrow alleyways and sidewalk cafés.You can take a boat trip to Puerto de Santa Maria which is across the bay of Cadiz and have a feast on seafood and local wines. Jerez de la Fronterra is renowned for its´ sherry production, beautiful horses and the Spanish Grand Prix. The Xmas lights in Jerez were very beautiful and there was a great atmosphere in the town centre. Seville which is about an hour and a half away but truly worth a visit. The Cathedral is breathtaking. The "Feria de Seville" is an amazing spectacle of Flamenco outfits, horses and carriages and a tribute to a city stooped in tradition and culture. The Easter week is an intense affair and revered throughout Spain with people flocking to the city to witness the very moving, religious processions throughout the day. The "Feria de Abril"-the April fair is the beginning of the Bullfighting season in Spain. The citizens of Seville are dressed in traditional costumes and this week is the highlight of the annual, social calendar.

There are other towns that are equally compelling and unique. Arcos has amazing cliffs and incredible views, Medina Sidonia,a sofisticated oldworld charm from more properous eras. Vejer is quaint, enchanting-perched on the top of a cliff with winding, cobbled streets and interesting shopping. Further up the coast towards Tarifa are stunning beaches, unspoilt stretches of coastline where white sand meets the dark green of the Mediterranean pine forests. In Tarifa you can take the hovercraft to Morocco or take a boat trip to see the dolphins and whales.

Gibraltar is not that far away either, just an hour and a bit. The views from the top of the rock are incredible and if you have a head for heights-take the cable car! Well worth it!!!

La Barrosa

The activities in the area include Golf-the nearest being five minutes away. There´s also a tennis club and horse riding nearby. The beaches are two of the best in the area. Swimming or just taking long walks along the beach is a pleasure.

In the area around the small harbour at Sancti Petri, there are watersport facilities where you can hire a wide variety of equipment-canoes, windsurfers, jet ski´s etc. There are also boat trips that take you further up the coast for different experiences.Fishing trips are very popular and fishing from the shore is also very popular.

There are a large number of 4 and 5 star hotels that offer spa facilities and beauty treatments at Novo Sancti Petri.

Chiclana is a very typical small town for the region. If you wander the streets and mingle with the locals, you will find many little bars and bodegas to sample the local "Finos" and "Tapas"(Wine and snacky type food) Be daring-everything is worth a try!! and quite cheap. There are many supermarkets in the area-well equipped and many offering foreign and English brands of food. It´s worth taking a walk along the tidal walls, keeping an eye open for the Flamingoes and the Storks. I once stood in the car park of the large hyperstore in Chiclana and a flock of Storks flew overhead-hundreds of them.It was absolutely amazing-low flying, coming into land to feed and wade in the salt flats. There are so many in the area that they have platforms built on the telephone and electric pylons to accommodate the nesting pairs of Storks. There is an incredible nest on the Church steeple in Chiclana-also worth a visit.

This part of Spain provides a opportunity to get to know the part of Spain not found on every glossy brochure but well worth getting to know.
