The Costa Calida/Murcia region

Costa Calida is a fairly undiscovered part of south-east Spain. It has an enviable climate with an average temperature of 21 degrees and over 300 days of sunshine per year.

La Azohia area

La Azohia is a totally unspoilt idyllic Spanish village where tuna is brought into the pier on a daily basis, and lies at the sheltered end of the large Mazarron bay, just 20 minutes from the town of Cartagena. There are restaurants on the sea front, but if you want very late nights, the town of Mazarron which is 10 minutes drive away, has plenty.

The mountains which parallel the coast give an endless variety of vistas - in fact you can walk up the mountain directly behing El Pinar Complex. In the valley behind, a road snakes up to Cabo Tinoso. Here is the biggest cannon you are ever likely to see with an amazing range of 35 km. These gun batteries were built in the early 1930s for the defence of Cartagena, the headquarers of the Spanish Mediterranean fleet. Quite apart from the historic interest, the views fom this height towards Cartagena and acrosss the Bay of Mazarron are stunning.

About an hour's drive away, is the fantastic mountain park of Sierra Espuna, south west of Murcia, with its deep valleys and high peaks. You can sometimes even enjoy snow in the higher elevations in the winter months. It is home to pine and oak forests and a wide range of animals and huge birds of prey, circling overhead in the thermals. There are also hundreds of kilometers of mountain biking trails in the Sierra Espuna.

Guestbook for LALIBELA

"The place is absolutely stunning and both Fiona and myself had a fantastic time. The weather from Sunday to Wednesday evening was gorgeous. Blue skies comfortable temperatures and plenty to do. On Wednesday evening the thunderstorms and lightning show from the roof terrace was spectacular. Thursday was very wet but that was our shopping day in Murcia. We went to the Pirate watchtower and the guns at Cabo Tinoso on Monday. Cartagena on Tuesday (amphitheatre was fantastic). Wednesday was Totana, Lorca and Aguilas (maps in the flat where very handy), Murcia Thursday and relax day on Friday. Will recommend to anybody and everybody I know. The menu del dia in the restaurants where spot on and Antipodas was very addictive. La Azohia is very quiet and very Spanish village and ticked all the boxes for Fiona and I." Scotland, Oct 2008

"We have just retuned from the Lalibella and have had a most enjoyable stay, although La Azohia was perhaps a little quieter than expected. The apartment was however so well equipped with loungers on the magnificent roof terrace, a shower and the fantastic barbecue which we took full advantage of!!!The views from the roof were to die for I must say. We were well taken care of by Clive and Pamela, the key holders, Clive met us at the airport and as we did not hire a car (a must really if you are confident to drive abroad which we are not)he took us to the main supermarket to do a big shop and fill the fridge with supplies! and with wine at 95 cents a bottle for reasonably decent stuff who could ask for more? The apartment was spotlessly clean and very spacious for the 3 of us. I would definitely reccomend to friends and would like to take the opportunity to thank Clive and Pamela for their friendly manner and for making us feel very comfortable." Carol, Newcastle, August 2008.

"Lovely apartment in a beautifully situated complex. The views from the roof terrace in the evenings were very pretty. The apartment had everything we needed plus a few handy extras such as travel cot, highchair, BBQ, deck loungers, scuba mask & beach mats. La Azoiha is a very scenic fishing village with great beaches and it remains quite under-developed and not too touristy, which is just what we were looking for. Hopefully it will remain quiet and unspoilt. The coves and beaches of nearby Isla Plana and Porto Mazzaron were great alternatives to the La Azoiha beaches, with La Bahia beach just outside Porto Mazzaron on the way to Bolnuevo is lovely and sheltered and very child friendly." Aoibhe, Scotland, July 2008

"more of a home than a holiday let" Mark, Fakenham, Mar 2008

"I can't fault the apartment it was all we expected and more, especially the roof terrace where we had most of our breakfasts and evening snacks gazing out over the sea in the distance. We were unfortunate to have some rain and cloudy weather our first few days but because of the roof terrace when there was a glimpse of sunshine we were able to take advantage of it. As for La Azohia itself, I'm not sure when the season starts but it definitely isn't until end of May. We went for 2 weeks middle May and the first week hardly anywhere was open, La Azohia may have "lots of lovely restaurants" but they aren't open middle May, but one or two seemed to be opening the second week we were there. The apartment has an invaluable asset - a SPANISH/ENGLISH dictionary so you can find out just what it is that you have bought and how to cook it."

"Yes we thoroughly enjoyed La Azohia and your apartment, which we found very comfortable and blissfully quiet. We were very lucky with the weather and will certainly return to watch the sunset from that delightful roof terrace." Kind regards, J, UK, February 2008

"Everything at Lalibela was great. The apartment is lovely , very well equipped and with all home comforts, even a mini-library! We were there for a couple of weeks in December and the weather was perfect – daytime temperatures about 18 degrees C. Lovely views and some great sunsets from the solarium. Since we enjoy hillwalking it was an ideal location. We could get onto the coastal hills from the front door! Detailed ordnance survey maps are readily available – the GR92 passes El Pinar development and heads into the hills in L’Azohia – passes the Big Guns and continues to Cartagena and beyond. For those who like more gentle walking it is very pleasant to stroll along the promenade to L'Azohia harbour, or to Isla Plana in the other direction. There are very good views from the lookout tower (easy access) above the village.
The nearest town is Puerto de Mazarron which had everything. We had a car for the 16 km round trip but there is a regular very cheap bus service from the bottom of the entrance road to El Pinar. There is also a bus service to Cartagena. Getting back to San Javier airport took 40 minutes. In short, we would definitely recommend Lalibela as a place to stay and L’Azohia as a destination.
A. Kearney, Leitrim, Ireland. Dec. 2007.

"The apartment was excellently equipped and had some very nice touches that made you feel at home as well as on holiday. Extremely comfortable! Stunning views from the solarium which are worth the money alone! Pam, the key holder is a gem and was most helpful as are the full time residents here. This area is an unspoilt area of Spain and is a delightful mix of locals and long stay N.europeans. I t has a real relaxed and friendly feel about the place. Great for walking, birdlife, biking, sailing, exploring but great for shopping too! I'm coming back! Karen, Newport, November, 2007.

"This is a beautiful modern apartment with everything you could need as well as being spotless. The location is just the place for a nice relaxing holiday. The beach is within walking distance with hardly anyone on it and the view from the rooftop solarium is wonderful. There are a few places to eat locally but the town is only ten minutes drive away and it's only twenty minutes to the city.Pam and Clive who look after the apartment are extremely nice and helpful. In addition to all this the rates are very reasonable so all in all,top marks."
Mark, Roherdam, October 2007.

"Thank you for letting us stay in your beautiful apartment; we had a great time and loved the village. We had a really relaxing time, spending most days on the beach. The apartment had everything that we needed and more - I must admit that I made use of a few of the books on the book shelf! We really enjoyed the fact that the area was quieter - it was so nice to go somewhere that hasn't had the 'costa' touch. We strolled along the seafront during the evening and went for a drink in the bar on the beach. Many thanks”
Kerry, UK. August 2007

" A wonderful apartment in a lovely village, a great place to relax and unwind. Thanks."
John, Oldham. September, 2007

"We have just returned from a beautiful five days in the apartment in March. The apartment is as descriped in the blurb. Fantastic views from the solarium over the Bay and when it was windy on Monday you could hear the waves breaking on the shore from the solarium. Terry runs a good pub and the food was excellent. Eimear (aged 10) thought it was a bit quiet but i guess you cant please everybody."
Casey, Clare, Ireland. March, 2007

A new two bedroom apartment, tastefully furnished, pristeenly clean, with air conditioning in all rooms. The kitchen area is very well stocked with all necessary appliances. A private rooftop terrace, with shower, is an ideal locaton for bbq's and it also affords one a panoramic view of the bay. A communal swimming pool is also at the disposal of apartment residents. We considered it to be first class and would highly recommend it to any holidaymaker.
C, @ D. McGinley, Dublin, Ireland. October, 2006
