Costa Calida: The Costa Calida, Spain's 'warm coast' is a fairly undiscovered part of south-eastern Spain. La Azohia is a totally unspoilt idyllic Spanish fishing village. There are no large tour operators here, and even in the height of the season you will be able to find empty beaches along the coast.
The region of Murcia is locally known at the 'Market Garden of Spain' as it grows all kinds of salad vegetables, citrus fruits, nuts, rice and grapes. The Costa Calida boasts 320 days of sunshine a year, average temperatures in the winter are 17 degrees, and 27 degrees in the summer.
The governing bodies, the Town Halls, in this region are anxious to protect the national heritage of their mountains, salt lakes, beaches and grasslands and have allocated huge areas to be reserved as National and Regional Parks. Having learned lessons from costas on each side of the region, they will not allow building at the expense of the local flora, fauna and quality of life.
Places to Visit: A five minute drive will take you to the little resort of Isla Plana where there are more restaurants, bars, shops and a bank.
Ten minutes drive will find you in the bustling port of Mazarron. Shops, pavements cafes, and bars are abundant here, an ideal place for young and old alike. The tree lined promenade is a favourite place for families to take an evening stroll, and watch the sun go down.
Further afield, approximately 30 minutes drive, is the famous port of Cartegena. Here you will see enormous cruise ships docking on a daily basis to enjoy the rich history of the port. The area has wonderful architecture and very classy shops, many vibrant squares, and well worth exploring.
Inland there are many places to visit, including the holy city of Caravaca de la Cruz. Travelling through orange, lemon, and olive groves, you will discover many jewels off the beaten track.
Activities in the Area: Come to La Azohia and you will relax … there is almost no pace of life here. This is an excellent area for families and couples. Walkers will also love this area as it caters for those who like long leisurely strolls on the flat, as well as those who prefer the more rugged environment. For the more energetic, there is golf, swimming, windsurfing, diving at all levels, sailing, boat cruises, biking, river rafting, tennis. For the less energetic, there is a spa at the local 4 star La Azohia hotel.
For families, La Azohia is the ideal safe environment, it's where the Spanish spend their holidays.
The area enjoys a wealth of interesting historical and geographical sites – salt flats, the largest lagoon in Europe at Mar Menor, mineral mines at Mazarron, the oldest submarine in the world, cannon sites, pirate lookouts, Roman and Carthaginian remains in Cartagena, Moorish architecture, Holy Cities, International Jazz festivals, rock concerts, fairs.

The Murcia region
Costa Calida, meaning the warm coast, boasts over 325 days of sunshine a year, and temperatures are good all year round. The area, sometimes referred to as Murcia, lies between Costa Blanca to the North East, and Costa Del Sol to the South West. Still relatively undiscovered, this is the place to visit if you want to discover unspoiled Spain. The area is also famous for its produce. Oranges, Lemons, Tomatoes, Olives, Peaches, Rice, Apricots can all be found growing in Murcia.
La Azohia is a small fishing village between Cartagena and Mazarron. This is unspoiled Spain - peaceful and very beautiful. The palm lined promenade stretches for miles, allowing pleasant walking on the flat. The beach is just five minutes walk from the apartment and if very clean and safe for children. In La Azohia there are several small bars and restaurants, 5 diving schools, a mini-market, chemist, bodega and canoes for hire. During high season there are several beach bars open.
The vibrant port of Mazarron is only four miles away, and Isla Plana just two miles. Here there is a larger selection of shops, boutiques and supermarkets. A regular bus service from La Azohia means that a car is not essential, but recommended.
A forty minute drive would take you to the famous La Manga strip where there are many watersports and golf available if you want to explore the more comercialised side of Costa Calida.
The bustling port of Cartagena is a must, and only 20 minutes by car or 30 minutes by bus. Cartegena is a very classy city, and major cruise ships stop off here to explore an area rich in history, not to mention the fantastic boutiques.

"Peaceful, perfect holiday in well equip apartment"
We stayed for a fortnight in June with my husband, father-in-law and our two small children (aged 2yrs and 4 yrs). Aside from misunderstandings over numbers in our party and arrivals and departure procedure with the Property Manager it was an idyllic stay. The owner is friendly and extremely helpful - and deserves a huge vote of thanks. Her attention to detail of the things you need on a self catering holiday was obvious and appreciated. The apartment itself is very well thought through. Everything down to pegs for the washing line are provided. The kitchen has lots of helpful items like a funnel to put water from large bottles into smaller ones to bring to the beach. Weather was perfect. It is a quiet and very Spanish resort (if you want busy nightlife and/or pie and chips - this is not the place for you). With small children we spent all of our trip on the beach or by the pool each day which tired out the children. The apartment complex is very cosmopolitan and friendly with lots of Spanish owning holiday homes so it was much busier at the weekends. Lots of families and retirees. The clean and well kept communal pool was only a few meters away, and the beach a short walk (although we took our rental car as more convenient with the children and there's a free place to park opposite). The village itself has a small supermarket (Leon) which is very well stocked. Remember to bring your own plastic bags as you will be charged for theirs! There are plenty of places to eat out at lunchtime but when looking for a mealtime suitable for smaller children (i.e. before 9pm) there was only one place to eat out - a Bodega called Molina. Although I believe another place we had lunch at, Antipodas further round the bay is open every evening further into the season. Very good food everywhere and friendly service. However, we ate at the apartment more evenings than not. With such a fabulous view from the solarium of the sea, it was no hardship! Lovely place to stay for a relaxing beach holiday.
Thanks for such a lovely review. Really glad you enjoyed the apartment and the views. I try very hard to make my guests stay as comfortable as possible, so I appreciated that you noticed the apartment is well equipped.
