The Costa Calida/Murcia region
Sand, Sea, Sun and Salud!
The World Health Organisation named Spain as the healthiest place to live in Europe and the second healthiest in the world.
Why is Spain so healthy? The more than 50 miles of salt lakes along the Costa Blanca, when combined with the warm climate creates a clean, dry air quality. Sufferers of asthma, bronchitis and other respiratory illnesses find significant improvement in their condition when holidaying in the area.
The weather in Spain is much warmer than in the UK and winters on the Costa Calida are very mild; people with arthritis and rheumatism find this weather eases their painful joints. This may explain why many retired people chose to settle in Spain.
The Mar Meñor Sea is famous for its black mud, said to have qualities that aid the treatment of arthritis and other related ailments; it is also good for skin problems such as acne. Mud bathing in the Mar Meñor followed by a drying walk along Lo Pagan pier, before washing it off again in the sea, is said to be very therapeutic.
Fortuna (Costa Calida) is a town built on several hot springs. The minerals are said to have healing qualities.
No wonder the Spanish greet one another with Salud (good health).
La Aparecida area
La Aparecida is a quiet village, but has a real Spanish feel to it. There are plenty of amenities, such as bank, supermarket, local shops restaurants, tapas bars and on a Sunday market. As with all Spanish villages, La Aparecida has its share of fiestas and celebrations, the main one being on the last Sunday in September, when there is a religious festival culminating in a huge feast comprising mostly locally grown produce.
In Orihuela there are two important monuments that can be viewed; The Cathedral and the Palace of Rubalcalva. The Cathedral was built in 12 century on the site where mosque had once been and is of Gothic style. The entrance is called Door of Loreto added on in the 15 century, there is also a beautiful Baroque organ. Through another entrance, the Renaissance style is evident. The Palace of Rubalcava was inhabited by members of the family up until 1933 and in 1976 it became property of the town. It has a sweeping marble staircase to the noble main salons – the red salon with family portraits, the yellow salon used nowadays for weddings, the dance hall or hall of mirrors of French style.
Murcia itself offers a number of interesting places to visit. The history of the city goes back to the year 800AD when it was founded as part of Cordoba. Certainly amongst the famous visiting points for any traveler is the Cathedral de Santa Maria. Finished in the 15th century the cathedral is the most impressive monument of Murcia. The city is divided by the Segura River and is known for its beautiful Baroque Cathedral, Almudi Palace and the castle of Monteagudo (where the Arab influence can be appreciated), a fortress from the 11th c., the Market de Veronicas, the Malecon Garden, the University of Murcia and the Museum Ramon Gaya.
The Museum Ramon Gaya, dedicated to the artist with this same name and native of Murcia, is found in Casa Palarea in the Catalina Square. It was inaugurated in 1990 when the artist was 82 years old and also includes works of art from other artists. Ramon Gaya was influenced by famous artists such as Vazquez and Rembrandt, this explains the style and intensity of his work.
