About this location
The Provence region
The Vaucluse is a department in the southeast of France, named after the famous spring, the Fontaine-de-Vaucluse.
Vaucluse is one of the most beautiful areas of Provence with its craggy peaks, sweeping lavender fields, countless vineyards, dramatic perched villages and endless sunshine.
The department of Vaucluse runs from the main city Avignon in the south up past Orange in the north. It also takes in the giant Mont Ventoux and the slopes that sweep down towards the city of Apt. The mountain range that comprise the Luberon area mark the southern extent of the Vaucluse.
This is a very fertile area with some great markets, lots of orchards and farms and, of course, the famous vineyards including Chateauneuf-du-Pape.
I would highly recommend reading A Year in Provence before your visit as it gives lots of information about the region and you can make a list of all the places the author Peter Mayle writes about.
The location is superb, L'isle sur la Sorgue and its picturesque canals, streams, waterwheels and alleyways have resulted in it being known as "Little Venice".
Restaurants line the waterways. There are numerous antique shops, galleries and shops. Market days are Thursdays and Sundays when the streets are crowded with antique stalls.
Fontaine de Vaucluse with its unique geographical feature is also nearby. As is the beautiful hilltop village of Saumane, home to the De Sade family whose Chateau dominates the area.
The magnificent hilltop Luberon villages of Mènerbes, Gordes, Lacoste and Bonnieux are all within easy reach as are the historic and cultural cities of Avignon, Aix en Provence, and Saint Remy.
Energetic visitors can hike in the mountains, kayak down the river from Fontaine de Vaucluse or go horse riding and cycling. Those of a more laid back disposition can stroll along the canal, meander through the forests or fish in the Sorgue river.
