The Costa Brava/Catalonia region

The Catalan coast 'Costa Brava' is well known for its wonderful beaches. Many are pretty little jewels, small and hidden away amongst beautiful rocky coves, while others like the golden sands in the bay of Roses on the north side of L´Escala stretch for mile after golden mile.

The 'Costa Brava' runs along the coast of the Catalan region of Girona. The capital, Girona, is a beautiful lively city of approximately 100,000 inhabitants. The city boasts some lovely architecture and has been called the little Venice of Spain with its pretty bridges and painted terraced town houses overlooking the river Onya. The city boasts a lot of history including Arabic baths and a Jewish quarter. A great panoramic view of the city can be gained by walking the top of the ancient defensive surrounding wall.

Culturally, the works of the artist Salvador Dalí are probably best known, and a visit to the museum of his work in Figueres, his home in Cadaques and his wife's castle in Puból are a must. The region has many other museums, festivals and exhibitions that are also well worth a visit.

Although the beaches may take much of the attention, Girona province possesses incredible diversity, friendly people and great food to offer. There are natural parks in the pre-Pyrenees, 40 minutes' drive from the coast, where you can walk to the top of a volcano in less than 30 minutes, or incredibly well preserved medieval towns which still host 'medieval markets' with the vendors dressed in traditional Catalan costume, selling locally produced artisan goods.

The area surrounding L'Escala the Emporda has been described as being like Tuscany; pretty towns with medieval centres built atop of hillocks looking out over a huge fertile plain covered with orchards, olive and lemon groves and vinyards.

The Emporda provides a fantastic place for cycling with well marked routes through quiet village where local restaurants and cafes serve 'Cuine Casolana' or real homemade food. On the subject of restaurants, don't forget that Catalunya is the province with most Michelin stars in the world and home to El Bulli which has been voted the best restaurant in the world. Many people come to the Girona region just to take advantage of the gastronomy but whether Michelin stars are in your budget or not there are fabulous restaurants to suit everyone's pocket.

A visit to Catalunya and the Costa Brava really is recommended and remember with temperatures around 25 degrees Celcius; April, May, June, September and October can be much more pleasant than the hot summer. Even the winter months are generally mild. Spring and Autumn are also a great time for golfers to take advantage of lower season green fees, many at a fraction of the equivalent UK courses fees to incredible venues like the Catalan PGA (40mins drive), Emporda (20mins), Pals beach (25mins), etc.

L'Escala / Camp De Pilans area

L'Escala is a small fishing town (famous for the best anchovies in the Mediterranean) to the north east of Catalunya on the southern edge of the Bay of Rosas, surrounded by sandy beaches. The Greeks and Romans both created their first settlements on the Spanish peninsula here in L'Escala at Empuries and for that reason the Olympic flame was landed here during the Barcelona Olympics in 1992.

Nowadays the area is a place the middle class Catalans would really like to keep as a secret for themselves, but independent holiday makers are starting to discover its charm. L'Escala is a truly wonderful place to stay with beautiful sandy beaches, shallow water and craggy outcrops providing lots of interesting places to explore and inlets to snorkel.

Camp de Pilans is only a distance from a pedestrian walkway that runs along the back of some of the coast Brava's most stunning beaches all the way from L'Escala old town past the Greek and Roman Ruins to St. Marti D'Empuries (approx 2 km long), St. Marti is a pretty walled medieval village. The village square is lovely place to have lunch and a few glasses of rosé and watch the world go by.

During your stay you will also find there is a huge amount you can do including watersports for all levels, golf, cycling both on and off road, horse riding, ballooning etc., or for those wanting to delve into Catalan culture there are lots of museums and places of interest locally including the Greek and Roman 'Ruins D'Empuries (20min walk), the museum of Salt (10 mins walk), and not forgetting the artist Salvador Dali's 'Teatre-Museu' and his house which is now itself a fabulous museum.
