The Catalunia region

The Costa Brava is a coastal region of northeastern Spain. The Costa Brava stretches from Blanes, 60 km (37 mi) northeast of Barcelona, to the French border.

In the 1950s, the Costa Brava was identified by the Spanish government and local entrepreneurs as being suitable for substantial development as a holiday destination, mainly for holiday tourists from Northern Europe and especially, the United Kingdom and France. The combination of a very good summer climate, nature, excellent beaches, was exploited by the construction of large numbers of hotels and apartments in seaside resorts. Tourism rapidly took over from fishing as the principal business of the area.

L'Escala

L'Escala is located between the south of the Gulf of Roses and the Cala (bay) Montgó. Traditionally, the main industry had revolved around fishing, especially sardines and the anchovies of L'Escala. More recently, the most important industry is tourism.

Nobody can present the municipality of L'Escala without mentioning the, located two kilometres away at St. Marti d'Empuries. This wonderful site attracts thousands of visitors every year, not only persons interested in archaeology but also by those who only wish to enjoy a walk in the fresh air in a setting of great beauty.

Much less well known is the small village of Cinq Claus, outside the normal tourist routes. The village, without asphalting and surrounded by fields, is located near Vilademat, and has one of the most important Romanic hermitages of the zone.

L'Escala offers all of the necessary infrastructure to serve and support tourism. The traditional cooking, calls for, and is never lacking fresh fish. Visitor will be able to take excursions by boat along the Costa Brava, practice sports such as sailing or diving, and other sport or cultural visits -- or simply enjoy the fine sand beaches of St. Marti.

The older centre of the town still retains the character of a typical Spanish working town with its bustling narrow streets and good selection of shops, bars, cafe's and restaurants. There are two small, popular beaches in the old town that add to the overall charm and atmosphere of the area.

There is a pleasant promenade which takes you from the old town into the Riells area. Along this promenade there is a weekly market every Sunday morning all year round. Riells has a good sized, gently sloping, sandy, blue flag beach and large Marina. There are also numerous bars, restaurants and shops around the Riell's area.

SERVICES: Showers and public WC, lifeguards from the 15th of June to the 15th of September, hammock and pedal boat rental and newsagent´s.
