The Costa Brava/Catalonia region
For people who know Catalonia well, L'Escala is generally considered to be the best holiday resort in the Costa Brava. Situated in the Alt Emporda district of the Girona region of Catalonia, the town also makes for an excellent base to discover the mostly unspoilt northern Costa Brava with it's beautiful beaches, traditional Spanish towns and villages, art, historic monuments, scenic countryside and nature parks including one of Spain's most important wild bird reserves which is situated a few miles to the north of town.
The area boasts a wealth of facilities for sports enthusiasts, there are several quality Golf courses in the area including the excellent Emporda 27 hole course. Cycling is very popular here, the area around L’Escala is flat, and the Pyrenees provide the inclines for the more serious riders. Tennis, walking, horse riding, go - carting and fishing and other water sports such as kayaking, sailing and snorkelling are popular and well catered for pastimes in the Costa Brava.
L'Escala area
L'Escala is perfect for families and independent holidaymakers who want to avoid the mass-market package resorts.
The town has skillfully combined a traditional Spanish fishing town with holiday resort without becoming 'spoilt' and has created its own unique atmosphere. The town has a population of around 6,000, so in the winter there is still plenty of life to it. Of course during the busy summer months it swells to many times that amount.
L'Escala is also renowned for its anchovies and ancient ruins of Empuries. The town is surrounded by blue flag beaches - the highest award possible in Spain. It also proudly boasts to have the first no smoking beach in Spain.
At the northern end of the town next to the ancient ruins of Empuries are some of the most beautiful unspoilt beaches anywhere in Spain with lovely soft sand sloping into the clear water interspersed with some rocky parts that make for great snorkelling. The beaches here are miles long and remarkably quiet.
In the town centre is the beach at Riell's which is popular with families with children, as it is large, gently sloping and next to lots of shops, restaurants cafe's and bars. The beach at Riells is a pleasant 15 minute stroll, from the villa, through a quiet residential area.
At the south side of town there is also the lovely sheltered beach at Montgo.
There are 3 large supermarkets, a few bars/restaurants and 2 popular clubs/discotheques within 5-10 minutes walk from the villa. One of the clubs attracts people from all over Emporda and beyond.
There is a popular Go-Kart track 5 minutes walk from the villa that is suitable for all ages.
The old village is approximately 20 minutes walk from the villa and it still retains the character of a typical Spanish working town with its bustling narrow streets and good selection of shops, bars, cafes and restaurants. There are two small, popular beaches in the old village that act as a focal point and add to the overall charm and atmosphere of the area.
How to get there
Fly to Girona Airport using Ryanair. From Girona Airport follow signs for the AP7/E-15 motorway, this is a toll road but costs less than 3 Euros. As an alternative the N 11 road heads north and is free but can be very busy. We would recommend the motorway which you would join at junction 8 (about half a mile from the airport) and travel north towards Girona and France.
You should exit the motorway at junction 5 (which is signed for L’Escala) and head along the G1 623 direct to L'Escala which is well signposted.
The distance is approximately 25 miles with a journey time of less than 40 minutes.
You can get a the bus from Girona Airport to L'Escala but you need to change buses in Girona city.

Guestbook for Villa Sastre
We were pleased with all aspects of the villa, we found it comfortable, clean and quite easy to find although the supermarket is now Carrefour not Champion and the air conditioning was great. Communication was good and prompt from the very first contact and telephone conversation helps build trust - important when you're sending money to a stranger ! Richard Blundell.
Overall we had a very pleasant and relaxing holiday in your villa which we found easily from your excellent directions. We very much enjoyed the pool and the variety of sun bathing areas which meant that we could usually find somewhere sheltered to escape the wind which blew for most of our first week as it sometimes does. The Sky TV was a godsend for my husband because of the football! The cleanliness of the villa interior was very good, the fridge and oven both spotless and the windows clean, which in our experience is unusual. Sue Denton
Can't think of any improvements but if we do, I'll let you know. Jo Lunt
We had a great time. The Villa was perfect. The pool was very good and also the service from Steven at the place was just in the eye. We enjoyed the week very much and will definitely return some other time. Thanks. Thomas Sarto
We had a wonderful time. Dave Wishart.
