Casa Carapelle
About the home
Casa Carapelle is situated just a short walk from several footpaths leading into the wooded countryside of the Gran Sasso National Park. The location is very quiet and peaceful, yet only 10 minutes drive to the local supermarket, a popular coffee bar and shops and a number of local restaurants.
The house is very spacious with a large entrance hall (one of the bedrooms is adjacent to the hallway). From here you access the upper floor via a stone staircase leading to 2 bedrooms, both with balconies and one of the bathrooms. Leading from the hallway down the wooden staircase you enter the large sitting room with French windows onto the garden.
An open doorway from the sitting room leads you into the spacious, fully equipped kitchen which also has French windows opening onto the garden with a tiled patio terrace - excellent for al fresco dining. Beyond the kitchen is the second stunning family bathroom which is built into the rock. There is also a large pantry which houses a fridge and a washing machine with ample space for storing skis, walking boots etc.
The house is ideal for lovers of peaceful summer or winter holidays surrounded by beautiful countryside and all that comes with living 'la dolce vita'!

BookThe Marche / Abruzzo / Abruzzo region
Abruzzo is still one of Italy’s undiscovered regions and has some truly breathtaking, untouched scenery. It’s full of beautiful villages that have retained their character – throughout the year there are fantastic festivals celebrating a local speciality or tradition; the snake procession is a big favourite, as are the chestnut, wild boar and trout festivals.
The coast has miles and miles of sandy beaches, renowned as some of the best in Italy. The skiing is superb throughout the region and, as in any beautiful mountainous area, there are endless walks through forests with waterfalls, wonderfully refreshing lakes to swim in, winding roads to cycle on, steep mountains to climb, horse riding trails to explore and at every turn there’s something to make you stop and admire. Italy’s food is known the world over and Abruzzo has some of the best local dishes served in rustic restaurants, where you’ll never go hungry and the wine flows freely.
Abruzzo is easily accessible, with the main train line running down the coast, as well as being served by Pescara airport and two main motorways. Rome is also just 90 minutes away, making Abruzzo an ideal jump off point for a trip to the capital. It’s also the centre of Italy, so the major towns and cities are easily accessible.
The L'Aquila / Carapelle Calvisio area
Carapelle Calvisio is a quiet village, nesting amongst the hilltops of the Gran Sasso National Park. There is a small shop in the central square of the village for the every day provisions. Excellent fresh Italian bread can be purchased here daily. There are wonderful views all around. High above Carapelle is the imposing ruin of Rocca Calascio, a day's excursion is a must and a visit to the local restaurant of Rifugio della Rocca a treat for the taste buds. The braised wild boar is excellent!
Santo Stefano - one of the most famous villages in Abruzzo, with numerous beautifully restored medieval stone buildings is no more than 1/2 hr drive from the house. Wonder through the narrow streets and find craft shops or cheese and wine specialists. Below the village of St Stefano is a lake with another wonderful local restaurant. There is no menu - they will tell you what they have on the day and if you don't speak Italian, then await to be surprised - you won't be disappointed!
There are 5 ski resorts in the area - Campo Imperatore, with the highest peak, Corno Grande of the Apennines rising high above the plain - is the closest to Carapelle and offers excellent skiing for the more advanced skier. To get to the ski resort, drive along the SS17 and just before L'Aquila turn right towards Paganica and Assergi. There is a cable car in Assergi to take you up to the ski resort of Campo Imperatore. (Plenty of parking to leave your car near the cable car).
The plain of Campo Imperatore is a fantastic place to explore not just in the winter, but offers numerous walking/hiking possibilities throughout the year.
Other ski resorts include Campo Felice - good for beginners and less capable skiers, Ovindoli, Lanciano and Roccarasso. So plenty to choose from for any level of competence.
As you drive through the hills you will be surprised just how few cars you will meet. It is a much under-populated area and a joy to explore. You can pull off the road just about anywhere to enjoy the view or a short walk.
Other places to visit that are not too long a drive are Bominaco Castle. The ruin stands high above the village of Caporciano and the views of the Maiella Mountain Range and also the Gran Sasso are fantastic. Two churches at Bominaco village are very much worth a visit. They house incredible 12th century frescos. You have to call a number pinned to the gate of the garden, so the lady who holds the key will come and open the church for you. There is a minimal cost.
If you fancy a trip to Rome, by car it will take just under 2 hours. You can take the bus from L'Aquila, cost around 10 euros, so you can enjoy the wonderful changing countryside along the route.

The house has been beautifully restored, with a mix of modern comforts and original features. Everything works: toilets, showers, hot water, cooker, washing machine, fridge. Three good size bedrooms with double or twin beds. Warm duvets, bed linen and towels all supplied. A cosy sitting room with a sofa and a working fireplace and a DVD player but no live TV or internet. The terrace garden gets the sun all day. It has almond trees, a plum tree, an apple tree and a grape vine. The kitchen table and the patio table both seat 6. From the bedroom windows and the terrace, you can see facing you the old village of Carapelle Calvisio, much of which was destroyed in the 2009 earthquake. Reconstruction work has started but there are no noisy bulldozers, just a crane in the distance. The small grocer's store in Carapelle sells everything from fresh bread to hair curlers. In San Pio, down by the main road, 10 mins away, there is a very good supermarket with fresh meat, deli counter, bread, fruit and vegs and lots of local products. There are very good restaurants in the surrounding villages - anything from 10 mins to 30 mins drive - serving local dishes. Rather than go out in the evening, we preferred to have lunch out in different places and just make a salad at home in the evening. There are lots of places to explore nearby and lots of good walks. Take a detailed map of the area. We went to Castelvecchio, Castel del Monte, Calascio, Rocca Calascio, Santo Stefano, Capestrano and Navelli, as well as the high plateau of Campo Imperatore with its stunning scenery. We also went on a day trip to Sulmona and Pacentro, about one hour's drive away. The Abruzzesi are really friendly, this area of the Abruzzo is still quite unspoilt and Casa Carapelle offers a good base to see it. |
