Home description and type of holiday.
The villa is located in the very quiet residential area of Sant Jordi. This area of Cataluña is unspoilt by dense tourist infrastructure yet provides a wealth of activities on the shore, in the mountains, or on the Ebro Delta. The local fishing village (L'Ametlla de Mar) is just 5 minutes drive.
The villa is located in the quiet urbanisation of Sant Jordi, where all of the building plots are 3000 square meters, meaning that you are not hemmed in or overlooked. The detached, modern villa was built in 2003 and has its own swimming pool, gas BBQ, and parking off-street. The villa sleeps a maximum of 6. It includes a fitted kitchen and a living area with combined dining and lounge facilities. In the summer the house is cooled by ceiling fans and blinds, in winter there is a wood fire and heaters. There is TV (with radio), DVD, stereo with link for I-pods. We have left numerous games, jigsaws, books, cds, and dvds for your use as well as local tourist information. Outside are two terraces (one under cover); both have tables and chairs for al fresco dining. The swimming pool is currently unheated, it is larger than average at 12 x 4 metres and there are four pool loungers. In the more remote part of the garden, there are hammocks and further sitting areas. The garage houses toys and inflatables for use at the beach or in the pool. Car parking is at the rear of the house in the garden on the road side. The main aspect of the house faces south and all bedrooms, lounge look out onto this secluded area, over the pool onto the extensive patios and gardens. The villa is maintained by our English neighbours, who are usually available to greet you on arrival. This is our second home and there are items in the garage and house which are for our personal use - they are clearly marked as such.
This area of Catalonia is unspoilt by dense tourist infrastructure yet provides a wealth of activities on the shore, in the mountains, or on the Ebro Delta. The local fishing village is just 5k and 5 minutes drive.

Large secluded pool and garden area. The area immediately around the pool and house is stocked with a profusion of local flowers and bushes, and is colourful almost all of the year.
There is a large terraced area outside the house. One of the dining tables is situated near to the BBQ out of the wind (on occasion there is a strong wind in this region). The other dining table is on the covered terrace immediately outside the lounge/front door to the house and there are steps down from it. There is a heated outdoor shower.
Beyond this, the garden becomes semi-wild but we have built paths through this area for you to wander down to sitting areas and the hammock. The semi-wild area contains wild plants and trees (rosemary, thyme, pine trees etc) together with some of our plantings (oleander, olive, almond, bottle brush etc). It is very peaceful down here, but the birds can be noisy. We have seen a red kite in the garden as well as hoopoes and it can be great fun watching swifts play in the evening.
Outside garden furniture includes four sun loungers and two dining tables - one has six chairs and the other has four but there are more chairs around the garden.
Car parking is on the road side of the house (only the kitchen overlooks this). The main aspect is mainly south facing, looking away from the road over the secluded pool, terraces, and gardens. The wood pile is also on the road side of the house and an emergency supply of dry wood is stored in the garage.
The villa is 1 ½ hours drive from Barcelona El Prat Airport and ½ hour from Reus.

Enquire nowThe Costa Dorada/Tarragona region
The Costa Dorada means gold coast, presumably because of the long golden beaches to the north of Sant Jordi. This part of Spain is green all the year round, and enjoys a more temperate climate than further south. It can be very hot in the summer months, but it is n never too unpleasant nor over-crowded. In winter the sun can be strong enough to allow you to sunbathe on empty beaches and eat out – particularly if you find a sheltered spot. The tramuntana wind blows here and can be extremely strong; it appears from nowhere and disappears as quickly. The weather has been changing over the last few years and it can also be very cold; one year there was a scattering of snow in January and in 2012 there was an April frost – both previously unheard of events. Despite the cold, the sun usually shines, and the winter months are ideal for those looking for an active holiday. The area is surrounded by high mountains and unspoilt coast.
There is so much to see in the immediate area - just 30 minutes away are the towns of Tarragona (World Heritage Site - incredible Roman remains); Tortosa (Cathedral, Parador, market) and Reus (shopping and the modernista trail); or Port Aventura for Disney-style entertainments. Barcelona is only 1 ½ hours away by train or car, so can be visited in a long day – there is so much to see, particularly the Gaudi architecture. The journey by train from L'Ametlla is a great experience as it hugs the coast line, and it is relatively inexpensive. The Barcelona train also passes through Universal Studios Adventure Park at Port Aventura and Salou for the Water Park (Caribe Aqua Park). Guests have also adventured further afield to Montserrat, Morilla, and into the Priorat wine country. Climbers and hikers have enjoyed the mountains of El Ports and the Sierra de la Mar. The L'Ametlla de Mar / Sant Jordi d'Alfama area
L'Ametlla
Many guests feel that the villa surrounds provides everything that they want, but the nearest town with facilities - including the local fishing fleet - (L'Ametlla de Mar) is only 5 minutes drive, and the nearest supermarkets are even closer. L'Ametlla means almond of the sea, and it is a traditional, pretty fishing village set on the rocky coastline. The narrow streets and busy plazas are fun to explore, and there are shops, restaurants, bars, a market and a sandy beach. The Catalans here are extremely welcoming and most shopkeepers have some English. There are many unpolulated sandy coves all along the coast path (Sant Jordi beach with castle is only 1.5k from the villa) – as far as we know all of the beaches are blue flag, and the water sparkles with transparent azure all year round. Along the coast pine trees reach down to the sea – no high rise here. Apart from the coast path there are mountain walks visiting pretty historic villages and ancient groves of olives and almonds. Everywhere there is the smell of the pine trees and of wild shrubs such as thyme, rosemary and lavender. There is a guide to ten local walks (in English) at the villa. This area is special because it is relatively untouched by tourist infrastructure yet there is so much of interest –Knights Templar castles (Miravet with boat crossing is a must to visit); local markets (El Perello is great on Saturday mornings), fiestas and festivals, and the huge and famous Delta Ebre. The Ebro Natural Park deserves special mention as it is a unique landscape which includes salt water areas, fresh water areas, sand dunes, bays, beaches, woods as well as paddy fields. It is famous for its fishing and over 300 bird species – including flamingos. Historically, this part of Catalunia was important in the Civil War, and small museums bear witness to this (e.g. Gandesa). Gastronomically, the food and wines are wonderful and locally you can get menu del dia (typically four courses, wine, and water) from as little as 10 Euros. We can provide recommends. There are three golf courses nearby, the most challenging is Bonmont. Sunsets are often spectacular in winter, and the sky is as clear and blue as the sea. L'Ametlla has good transport links being situated on the AP7 and A7 motorways, and offers railway connections to the north and south. Where to start...booked this villa at the last minute for a long weekend with my husband and two of our children. Flight into Reus, good small airport, 30 minute drive to the villa. You do need a car and the surrounding areas are so worth the trips. Fab..new refurbed bedroom and bathroom upstairs/log fire(evenings were chilly in April) great to sit round with a glass of wine after a day exploring. The pool although not so warm (owners have plans to heat it) the boys went in, lads liked it as is a good size so should imagine in the summer its amazing. Then theres the gardens....almost a mini forest at the bottom, stunning and so relaxing. Only down side..we wish we had stayed longer. There are some amazing places to visit the river Ebro Miravet, breathtaking scenery, some of the coves looked great too. The local wines were amazing. We will certainly be going back. It is obvious the owners care a great deal for this villa and its lovely that they are happy to share it with others. infact I'm thinking why have I put such goodrewiew on, as it will get booked up quicker now! If you looking for a real Spanish holiday away from the madness of hotels and queueing in the resturant and where you dont have to leave your towel on the sunbed by the pool at 6am for the real spain go here. Thanks again to the owners it really is all advertised and some. Response: Jane - thanks for the review - we see that you really do love the villa and local area as much as we do! we are more than happy for you to spend more time. Lorrie |

The villa is very cosy and was perfect for our family. We enjoyed ourselves tremendously. The villa was close to many destinations that we wanted to visit including Reus, Cambrils, Tarragona and... more Response: Thanks Ivy - we always hope that everyone will love the villa and the area as much as we do! The villa had everything it promised and was as clean and equipped as the description and pictures suggested. We loved time at the villa by the pool just as much as we enjoyed finding and enjoying local beaches - loved the Spanish feel of the area, less touristy and commercialised than the usual 'Costas'. A car is necessary in this location but it does not take long to get the lay of the land and when we hopefully return to this villa we will be quicker at locating supermarkets to supply bbq days and maximising on favourite beaches and restaurants. The local wind can get lively which can be fun, the food at the 'no frills' local bar in Sant Jordi is great, the River Ebro and inland villages are definitly worth exploring and with a variety of beaches, the villa and area make for a great holiday location which caters for most tastes - we could have done with a longer trip to finish what we started! Enjoy! Response: Hi there thank you so much for taking the time to review the villa, it is really appreciated. As it is our second home rather than a commercial let, I take comments very personally! we just had a new bathroom put in upstairs in order to put in a king sized bed and make the bedroom bigger. we go out to take a look this week, so much excitement. thanks again. lorrie |
