Home description

A secluded location with wonderful views, it has excellent local restaurants and catering available on site.

Set midway between Rouen and Le Mans, this Maison Maitre has good local amenities but charming, unspoilt, villages and towns are also within easy reach. The Normandy / Eure region

- St Evroult Notre Dame du Bois is the charming local village on the edge of a forest. In the heart of the Orne, Basse Normandie, it features a large boating lake, ancient Abbey ruins, a campsite with mini-golf, and mini-supermarket with a great boulangerie (Viveco). It also has an fantastic restaurant and one further café/restaurant which offer excellent, good value, food. In 1998 Luc Besson shot scenes for Joan of Arc in the village using the atmospheric abbey ruins as its backdrop. Besson is said to have fallen in love with the area whilst filming and subsequently purchased a chateau in the nearby village of Trinitie des Laitiers. Other famous neighbours include Louis Vuitton.

The Viveco shop in the village sells a wide range of provisions plus baguettes, pastries, rustic bread, croissants and cakes. The local newspaper 'Le Reveil', who regularly report what’s happening in the area, can also be purchased here. The nearby village of Ferte Fresnel has a range of shops including a Viveco, butchers, pharmacy and bank, as well as a boulangerie selling delicious bread, cakes and pastries. You can enjoy lunch or a drink in the café/restaurant, Le Lac des Cygnes, opposite the lake in St Evroult; if you’re interested in having dinner, you are advised to make a reservation in advance. The village also boasts a new restaurant, Le Relais d’Abbaye, serving set and à la carte menus for lunch and dinner. They do particularly good value set menus for lunch including wine and coffee for 10 Euros.

L Aigle area

The nearby village of La Ferte Fresnel has the locally renowned 'La Paradis' hotel/restaurant, popular with local people every night of the week and where excellent meals can be enjoyed at a fraction of the equivalent English price. For a very special meal out, 'La Marigotiere' in nearby Notre Dame du Hamel serves fabulous à la carte food in a riverside location. St Evroult and the neighbouring villages are also lucky enough to enjoy the services of a pizza van where high quality but very reasonably priced pizzas can be conveniently ordered over the phone and then collected from the van in the village. There are also several restaurants and takeaways in the nearby towns of L’Aigle and Gacé. L’Aigle also offers two decent hypermarkets whilst Gacé has a smaller supermarket.
Petrol stations are located in Ferte Fresnel, Monnai, Gacé, and L’Aigle. The nearest train station is located in L’Aigle and has an excellent service into Paris and other parts of the region.

- The nearest Tourist Information Centre <LINK http://www.paysdelaigle.com/>http://www.paysdelaigle.com</LINK> is located in the historic quarter of L'Aigle where leaflets and information are available on all the area's attractions. Throughout the year a range of events take place including food festivals, local fetes, night markets, and music festivals. In L'Aigle itself, the 3rd largest market in France takes place every Tuesday morning. Here you can explore stalls with clothes and gifts on offer, in addition to a wide range of local produce including locally produced pink garlic, honey, cheese, ham, cider etc.

- The French National Stud at Haras du Pin is located a similar distance away and is worth a visit for its grand architecture, history, and a chance to see the free horse processions and promenades which take place on Thursdays.

- The village of Camembert and its museum are nearby. It's also easy to visit the wonderful beaches at Deauville and Trouville for the day.

- For great nightlife, shopping, restaurants, and architecture visit Rouen or Paris - both just an hour a way.

- Other attractions include a Zoo near Lisieux (only 40 minutes drive away), karting, a flying school - in fact pretty much anything you might want to do on holiday! We have plenty of information at the house on these and many other local attractions.
