The Kyrenia District
Situated on the north coast of Cyprus, Kyrenia, with its 6,000 year long history, unique remains of countless civilisations, miles of natural beaches, calm sea, and mild climate is an idyllic Mediterranean town.Situated on the north coast of Cyprus, Kyrenia, with its 6,000 year long history, unique remains of countless civilisations, miles of natural beaches, calm sea, and mild climate is an idyllic Mediterranean town.
Northern Cyprus is blessed with the most pleasing climate in the whole of Europe. The winters are mild and rarely extend beyond February, with over 300 days of sunshine a year. The temperatures can reach into the 70s as early as March. In April and May, Cyprus is at its most beautiful with fields of wild flowers in full bloom. July and August are the hottest months and ideal for sun worshippers.
To get a taste of Cyprus 30 years ago you should visit the Karpaz peninsula where time stands still. There are miles of sandy beaches with not a person in sight even in the summer. Ancient towns, basilicas, ruins and tombs scatter the area waiting to be explored. Be sure to visit the old dungeons in Famagusta and the ancient ruins at Salamis.
Kyrenia / Girne area
Kyrenia (Girne) is the prettiest town on the island, a tranquil seaside resort of the type that has all but died out in the Mediterranean. Its charming and tiny harbour, full of yachts and fishing boats is framed by the colossal hulk of its crusader castle. With the backdrop of the jagged mountains on one side and the calm sparkling sea in front , the harbour has an intoxicating atmosphere.
Kyrenia Castle houses the oldest shipwreck in the world, the spectacular Bellapais Abbey nearby and the Roman ruins at Salamais are ideal for history lovers. Wherever you are, you always have the benefit of fantastic sea views and the dramatic backdrop of the Besparmak mountain range.
Diving, snorkelling, watersports and paragliding facilities are available. Day excursions on leisure boats which travel round the coast daily are a pleasant way of sunbathing whilst seeing the island from a different viewpoint. Trekking is very popular around the nearby hills particularly in the Spring when they are covered with wild flowers.
