The Kyrenia District
This is possibly the most beautiful region of Cyprus, bounded on the north side by the Mediterranean sea and to the south by the majestic Five Finger Mountains.
Kyrenia (Girne) is a very historic town with over 6000 years of history spanning many civilisations. Fronted by a picturesque and lively harbour crammed with boats and many quayside restaurants and an 800-year old Byzantine castle dominating and guarding the harbour entrance, this town positively invites the visitor to come and stay.
This is an easy place to while away the hours exploring the local shops, markets and cafes or stepping our for a brisk walk along the seafront promenade with its chic and romantic restaurants.
Kyrenia area
The castle is home to a fascinating museum with many historical artefacts including the world's oldest shipwreck. Not far sway is the Folk Arts Musuem. Just outside Kyrenia you will find the legendary Bellapais Abbey and 12th-century monastery, which hosts an international Music Festival in May.
Just a few minutes drive away, high in the mountains overlooking Kyrenia, is the fairy-tale castle of St Hilarion, said to be the inspiration for Walt Disney's castle for Snow White. This ancient site has a 1000-year history.
For even more ancient history Ayios Epiktitos Vrysi is a Neolithic settlement on a small headland on the coast, and at Karmi you will find a Bronze Age necropolis.
For the more adventurous visitor there is some excellent trekking in the Five Finger mountains, tandem paragliding, and of course a wide variety of watersports including water-skiing, windsurfing and diving, all of which can be arranged locally. Not far away there is a fantastic international standard golf course at Kireneum, and Kyrenia provides the usual holiday night life facilities.
Further afield, a trip to Famagusta on the east coast is worth a day's exploration, and in June/July there is entertainment at the International Art and Culture Festival.
How to get there
Fly to Ercan airport in Northern Cyprus - about 20 mins drive. Alternatively fly to Larnaca in Southern Cyprus. We arrange transfers via a local agent, who will also organise car hire for delivery to your door on arrival.
The main two airlines are Turkish Cyprus and Turkish, with routes from Manchester and Heathrow to Ercan (Lefkosa)
