The Sabah region
Borneo is full of adventure-Mountain Climbing, Rafting, Botanical, Zoological Gardens, World Class SCUBA diving and excellent shopping.
Kudat is near the Tip of Borneo, which is the confluence of the South China and Sulu sea and an area known as the Coral triangle-the most bio diverse ocean region in the world.

The town was founded by A H Everett of the British North Borneo Company on December 7, 1881 to be the first capital of British North Borneo, due to its strategic geographic location. However, after being repeatedly raided by Bajau, Sulu and Illanun pirates, in 1883 the capital was shifted to the more secure port of Sandakan, on the east coast.
Borneo is a year round destination with temperatures rarely ever falling below 30º March - November are generally the optimum months to enjoy the most sunshine as December - February can be variable. However, a day without any sunshine is rare. The Northeast Monsoon occurs from November till January bringing stormy weather and rainfall. For February till April, the weather becomes relatively dry as a result of dry winds coming from the Pacific Ocean. The annual typhoon season that sweeps towards the Philippines do not affect Sabah that is directly below it, giving it the popular name as ‘Land Below the Wind’. Mount Kinabalu in Sabah has the coldest temperatures and is a popular tourist destination.
Kudat area
Kudat also has a Marina, lots of international yachts come in here from all over the world and a 18 hole golf course in the village (less than 8 GB pounds (RM 44) a month for 7 days a week golf)

5/5Wonderful and Very Easy happyhugh Melbourne, Australia Review Submitted: June 1, 2009 Date of Stay: May 2009 Everything about our stay at Poseidon House was wonderful. From the beginning when we made our first enquiry the level of support and information provided was of the highest quality. The booking process was easy and payment terms were very reasonable and flexible. The information provided by the owners about the house and the region was great and really helpful to help us plan and get excited. This included detailed and accurate directions from some of Borneos large towns.
On arrival the house was everything we had hoped it would be and was exactly what we had seen in the photos. It was beautifully presented and perfectly ready for our arrival.
The staff at the house were amazingly helpful and frankly made the stay as wonderful as it was. They provided great service and were very ameniable to our requirments, They also were wonderful guides and sensational cooks!
The town of Kudat itself is fairly simple but had everything one could need only a short drive away and with a house this nice why would you want to leave?!
We highly recommend Posiedon House for your stay in the region. It really is as wonderful as it looks and provides that touch of luxury we were after. We were five adults and a two year old and had the best time. Everything was absolutely perfect, from the introduction by the owner over phone, email and skype, to the setting and the house itself, the cleanliness and the staff.
The house is just stunning and the photos really does not do it justice. And the maid deserves a special mention, she is just fabulous and her cooking is brilliant.
We would love to come back! The drive from Kota Kinabalu is about 2.5 hours, and the kids were getting a little antsy by the time we got to Kudat. But as soon as we got to Poseidon House, their restlessness changed into sheer excitement. The house and grounds are so exotic and beautiful, the setting is just picture-postcard perfect, and the accommodations are absolutely first-class. We were all captivated from the minute we arrived.
The amazing thing about Poseidon House is that it is even lovelier than the photos on the website would suggest! And the photos make it look pretty nice. We were a little worried that the actual house wouldn't quite compare with the images on the website, but that was not a problem at all. The furnishings and decor are all extremely tasteful and well done.
Then there is the pool! It is much bigger and even nicer than we thought, based on the photos. It was almost impossible for us to get our kids out of the pool -- they were completely enchanted by it. You really have to experience the setting to appreciate how amazing the house and pool are.
On top of that, you have a kilometer or so of what is essentially a private beach at your disposal. The beach is perfect for collecting shells (hundreds of them!), swimming, snorkeling, checking out the critters in the tide pools, etc. We had a bit of stormy weather during our stay, and the wind and waves stirred up quite a bit of sand and silt that clouded the water. But on the calm days, the water was crystal clear and visibility was excellent.
The town of Kudat is definitely not a major vacation destination. However, it has all the necessities, and as the website suggests, we enjoyed driving into town and going to the fish market to pick out our dinner. Everyone was quite friendly and helpful. If you're looking for a place to really get far away from the hustle and bustle of your daily life, Poseidon House and Kudat are ideal.
Perhaps the best part of Poseidon House, though, is how friendly and helpful the owners are. They offered helpful, accurate advice about literally every part of our trip. They went out of their way to make our trip convenient and worry-free. It was one of the best vacations we have ever had, and we can't wait to go back again! Bond's retreat 5/5 Ian's Borneo Hampshire, United Kingdom. Date Submitted: December 04, 2008 Date of Stay: September 2007 Like something from a James Bond scene Poseidon's House erupts out of the rock promontory that it sits on. I can almost see Ian Fleming sitting on the large veranda, overlooking a tropical beach ocean view that would challenge any wide angle lense, penning his latest Bond novel.
I've stayed here twice when traveling with Borneo Biking Adventures. I remember my first impression of entering through the gate and up the drive through the landscaped surroundings up to the house and then out onto the veranda. After a long day riding to sit outside and stare out over the beautiful view was truly intoxicating.
The house itself is a beautiful setting for relaxing and exploring the area around Kudat and beyond. The property is immaculately turned out. My bedroom suite in particular was fantastic with the rock that the house is built on providing one wall to the suite, which added character to the rooms and makes it truly unique. I could have happily stayed there much longer.
The property doesn't stop with the landscaped grounds, beautiful house and pool area but extends down to a private beach and reef. This fantastic opportunity to snorkel completely undisturbed for hours simply adds to the feeling that the property is like something out of a Bond movie.
The sense of privacy and the luxurious surroundings make this a truly stunning place to stay. Recommended for: Families with Teenagers, Age 55+, Adventure Seekers, Romantic Getaway, People with Disabilities, Girls Getaway, Pet-friendly ----------------------------------------

Snorkeling on the reef. 4/5 Termite Kota Kinabalu, Sabah, Malaysian Borneo. Date Submitted: September 26, 2008 Date of Stay: September 2008 Swam out to the reef from the private beech last week. Stunning, lots of new coral growth, young giant clams, amazing variety of tropical fish. I am a family friend, so not unbiased but this is truly a lovely place. If you are looking for some were really special, Poseidon's Lodge is that. Not suitable for small children, those with disabilities or without a car but is most suitable for self reliant adventure seekers who want the best. Solitude in the lap of luxury 5/5 Simple Simon Kota Kinabalu. Date Submitted: September 23, 2008 Date of Stay: March 2008 Ray and Fran's Kudat Beach house is more than a perfect holiday rental residence. The house and pool exude luxuriance and are nestled in a well manicured and perfect setting looking out onto the blue waters of the Kudat Bay. Our stay was just amazing, the hospitality beyond our expectations and the peace and quiet just what the doctor ordered! Go on spoil yourself you wont regret it! A stunning place to stay! 5/5 Turtle Nick Kota Kinabalu, Malaysia. Date Submitted: September 18, 2008 Date of Stay: March 2007 This has got to be one of the most idyllic settings for a getaway one could dream of. A vast balcomy overlooking the South China Sea, swimming in the ocean down off the private beach, or soaking in the infinity pool watching the sunset.
The house is simply stunning: Built on a rock precipice, it overlooks the beach and ocean and has the most striking architecture. Foundations embedded in sheer granite, a pool cupped between natural rock formations, and an expansive garden.
The place is remote and secluded, with a privacy gate far from the villa, and the maid is equally unbtrusive. A perfect getaway or place to simply relay away from the hustle and bustle of daily life. Recommended for: Age 55+, Romantic Getaway ------------------------------------------------------
Perfect place to relax away from it all 5/5 Clanmacq Kota Kinabalu, Sabah, Malaysia. Date Submitted: September 18, 2008 Date of Stay: March 2008 Poseidon House is a stunning villa whose three floors are built around and on top of a large rocky outcrop with commanding views over the sea. In the two bedrooms on the lower levels the sandstone rock actually forms some of the interior walls, giving the rooms real character. We stayed in the Sunset room, a beautiful and extremely spacious en suite room with windows on three sides and dramatic views down the side of the rock to the rainforest below.
Although the house is only a 10 minute drive from Kudat town it is nevertheless set away from any other houses completely on its own down a private drive with its own beach frontage. It's amazingly peaceful. The only sound of civilisation we heard during our stay was the put-put of the small fishing boats coming out at dusk for a night's fishing. The house complements the peace of the location with a very relaxed atmosphere inside. The vast living area on the main floor has floor to ceiling french windows that slide open to create the impression of being outside but still sheltered from the heat of the sun. Everything is furnished and decorated to a very high standard in neutral colours that really suited our European tastes.
One of the highlights was the exotic swimming pool, formed from a natural hollow in the rock - it's a pool with a difference, which we really enjoyed. A short walk down some steps at the bottom of the garden leads to a very nice, and completely deserted, beach of white coral sand. There is a coral reef just offshore that is suitable for snorkelling, but having been used to the largely undamaged reefs in the marine park near Kota Kinabalu we were disappointed at the amount of damage to this reef caused by fishing.
It's a place that lends itself to just chilling out - which suited us fine. There isn't a great deal to do in Kudat. Eating out is cheap but fairly basic and the supermarket has a fairly limited range - we would suggest bringing any luxury food items with you. Further along the coast there are some truly stunning beaches near the Tip of Borneo.
Next to the house is the living quarters of the house staff. We enjoyed the luxury of having the rooms made up and cleaned each day. Sabah the caretaker was always willing to help and we got by with my smattering of Malaysian and his smattering of English!
Overall we would recommend this villa to those who want to experience the natural beauty of North Borneo and who really want to relax in style. Recommended for: Families with Teenagers, Romantic Getaway ----------------------------------------------------------
Absolutely breathtaking! 5/5 Poppins Cheltenham, UK. Date Submitted: September 17, 2008 Date of Stay: August 2008 I stayed at the Beach Villa a few weeks ago and was stunned by the beauty of not only the house but also the surrounding area. It was the perfect holiday where my husband and I could be on our own but stay in complete luxury and feel looked after.
The house is amazing and huge! The swimming pool has been built around the natural rock and has a view of the sea and the beach.
The beach feels private and is very clean, I would recommend this holiday to anyone! Recommended for: Families with Teenagers, Age 55+, Romantic Getaway, Girls Getaway, Pet-friendly, Sightseeing, Families with Young Children
