Langkawi Island is located just off the coast of North Western Malaysia, about 30 km from Kuala Perlis and 51 km from Kuala Kedah and close to Thailand. The archipelago of Langkawi contains 99 islands during high tide whereas during low tide, the number of islands can be as many as 104.
Sanctuary of some of the most ancient rainforests in the world, they are teeming with exotic flora and fauna. Langkawi Island itself is the largest among the archipelago, measuring about 478.5 sq km, is the only one with any real settlement. It fringed by lovely beaches scattered along its coast.
Reaching Langkawi is fairly uncomplicated. It only involves an hour’s flight from Malaysia’s capital, Kuala Lumpur. Alternatively you can come via ferry from the mainland or Penang Island.
The majority of the archipelago’s 65,000 inhabitants—mostly Malay—live on Pulau Langkawi. It’s all traditional with small kampungs (villages) of stilted wooden houses and rice fields with gray water buffalo sleeping under the molten midday sun. Shy kiddies peep out from behind trees and wave at you. Villagers use the steps of their houses to sit and mend nets or shuck vegetables—I watched one old boy giving his neighbour an old-fashioned shave with a bowl, a brush, and a cut-throat razor. But most of the island is untouched by humans, a wilderness of mountains, waterfalls, and rainforest.
The island is still very much a rural landscape with villages and paddy fields.
The Kuah area
Kuah is the main town on Langkawi Island and is the entry point for those coming by ferry from either the mainland or Penang Island. The town is centred on its jetty, which brings in flocks of tourists each year who come to enjoy the tax free shopping and other attractions of Langkawi. Over the years, Kuah has developed to become a modern and vibrant town with many shopping and dining opportunities, helped by the astounding
growth of visitors to Langkawi.
The name ‘Kuah’ comes from the Malay word for ketchup, and legend has it that the town arose from a cup of gravy spilled on the land by two giants fighting! Kuah has a wide range of hotels but no resorts, as the town has no proper beach despite being located by the sea. Also, the night-life in Kuah consists mostly of eating out in seafood restaurants, though there are a few bars and pubs located in some of the hotels.
Still, Kuah boasts many facilities and attractions, making it a convenient and attractive place to stay despite the lack of beach and night spots.
Today, Kuah is indeed booming as a commercial centre with shopping complexes, restaurants, fast food outlets, hotels and handicraft shops sprouting all over the horizon.

By Road
Drive to Kuala Kedah or Kuala Perlis, the main take-off points by ferry to Langkawi. The journey from Kuala Lumpur to Kuala Kedah takes about six hours while Kuala Perlis is another hour away.
By Air
Malaysia Airlines and budget carrier AirAsia and Fire Flyz provide direct air services from the Kuala Lumpur International Airport (KLIA) or Penang( Bayan Lepas) to Langkawi.There are direct flights to Langkawi from London twice a week.
By Rail
Keretapi Tanah Melayu (KTM) or Malayan Railway provides economical and comfortable rail services from Kuala Lumpur to Alor Star in Kedah and Arau in Perlis (north of Kedah). From these points, take a taxi or bus Kuala Kedah and Kuala Perlis for your ferry to Langkawi.
By Sea
Express ferries provide regular services daily to Langkawi from both Kuala Kedah and Kuala Perlis. The journey takes about 1 hour 15 minutes and 45 minutes respectively. From Penang to Langkawi the ferry takes about 2 hours 30 minutes. The island is also a stopover for Star Cruises,
one of the largest luxury cruise lines in the world.
Car Hire is available on the spot. A car is not essential however to enjoy what Langkawi has to offer a car is advised, at least for part of your stay.

I stayed with my daughter (23), her fiancée and a friend for six days in a first floor two bedroom apartment - just on the edge of the pool area. The stay was excellent from beginning to end. Before arrival the manager, Robin, contacted us by text message and phone, and arranged our pick up at the airport. The house keeper, Kate, settled us in, and even arranged a hired car to be delivered within 15 minutes of our arrival ... and took care of all the paper work too. It also should be mentioned at a very reasonably price. We had a wonderful stay in the bright, pleasant apartment, equipped with all we needed for some relaxing days. In our booking we expressed a wish for an apartment "as near to the pool as possible". And indeed the pool was on the doorstep. Only a few yards across the road, and we were in the large, clean pool. <br/>Upon our departure Robin also arranged our transportation - and even to care of the parking ticket we got the day before our departure. I would most certainly recommend you to stay an take advantage of the facilities, the extremely good service, and the quite location - not far from the city.

What a perfect place for a holiday in Langkawi! We stayed in the apartment for six weeks and enjoyed every day. Since we are a family travelling with our one year old daughter, we wanted to find a place where we can have lots of space and a quite surrounding. The apartment is spotless and the pool is outstanding, very clean and huge! Every morning my husband took our daughter for a swim, while I could enjoy a sleep-in morning. There is something special about this place - you are on a holiday, but you feel like at home. You get to know your neighbours and everyone greets you with a smile. Rob and Robin can even arrange a babysitter for you, which turns your family holiday into a romantic holiday. We were very pleased with our kind babysitter who was taking care of our daughter a few times per week. It felt safe to leave our daughter at home (yes, that's what we used to call this place) because even though we were out having a great time, our kind hosts and neighbours were checking up on our daughter. If you need help fixing something like gas to your stove, rent a car, get some DVDs or whatever it might be, Rob and Robin always take care of it right away. Our stay in Chogm Villa was everything we'd hoped for and more! Highly recommended, we hope we'll get the pleasure of staying there again.

As a family group of 14 people aged between 14 and 70 we loved our holiday at CHOGM Villa with Langkawi My Holiday. The apartments were stunning and very comfortable with everything we needed to make self catering easy when we wanted to. Supermarkets are with in easy access and our hosts Rob and Robin knew the best great value restaurants were we spent most nights. They were great fun to hang around with, and really made us welcome. The pool area is lovely, and very suitable for just lazing about.
