The Langkawi Island region
Langkawi Island is located just off the coast of North Western Malaysia, about 30 km from Kuala Perlis and 51 km from Kuala Kedah and close to Thailand. The archipelago of Langkawi contains 99 islands during high tide whereas during low tide, the number of islands can be as many as 104. Sanctuary of some of the most ancient rainforests in the world, they are teeming with exotic flora and fauna. Langkawi Island itself is the largest among the archipelago, measuring about 478.5 sq km, is the only one with any real settlement. It fringed by lovely beaches scattered along its coast. The island is still very much a rural landscape with villages and paddy fields.
Kuah area
Kuah is the main town on Langkawi Island and is the entry point for those coming by ferry from either the mainland or Penang Island. The town is centreed on its jetty, which brings in flocks of tourists each year who come to enjoy the tax free shopping and other attractions of Langkawi. Over the years, Kuah has developed to become a modern and vibrant town with many shopping and dining opportunities, helped by the astounding growth of visitors to Langkawi.
The name ‘Kuah’ comes from the Malay word for ketchup, and legend has it that the town arose from a cup of gravy spilled on the land by two giants fighting! Kuah has a wide range of hotels but no resorts, as the town has no proper beach despite being located by the sea. Also, the nightlife in Kuah consists mostly of eating out in seafood restaurants, though there are a few bars and pubs located in some of the hotels.
Still, Kuah boasts many facilities and attractions, making it a convenient and attractive place to stay despite the lack of beach and night spots. Today, Kuah is indeed booming as a commercial centre with shopping complexes, restaurants, fast food outlets, hotels and handicraft shops sprouting all over the horizon.
How to get there
By Road Drive to Kuala Kedah or Kuala Perlis, the main take-off points by ferry to Langkawi. The journey from Kuala Lumpur to Kuala Kedah takes about six hours while Kuala Perlis is another hour away.
By Air Malaysia Airlines and budget carrier AirAsia and Fire Flyz provide direct air services from the Kuala Lumpur International Airport (KLIA) or Penang ( Bayan Lepas) to Langkawi.There are direct flights to Langkawi from London twice a week.
By Rail Keretapi Tanah Melayu (KTM) or Malayan Railway provides economical and comfortable rail services from Kuala Lumpur to Alor Star in Kedah and Arau in Perlis (north of Kedah). From these points, take a taxi or bus Kuala Kedah and Kuala Perlis for your ferry to Langkawi.
By Sea Express ferries provide regular services daily to Langkawi from both Kuala Kedah and Kuala Perlis. The journey takes about 1 hour 15 minutes and 45 minutes respectively. From Penang to Langkawi the ferry takes about 2 hours 30 minutes. The island is also a stopover for Star Cruises, one of the largest luxury cruise lines in the world.
Car Hire is available on the spot. A car is not essential however to enjoy what Langkawi has to offer a car is advised, at least for part of your stay.

Margo and Gerrit from the Netherlands: Facilities were great as well as location and layout for all accommodations. The description in the brochure was accurate. It was clean, provided with very good customer service and all activities were very well organized. We were very impressed by the "personal touch" of our guide as well as by his acquaintance with Malaysia its habits and its inhabitants. Date Submitted: February 24, 2009 Date of Stay: February 2009 Het appartement is goed opgezet , schoon en uitstekend ingericht en onderhouden.Elke twee-persoonskamer heeft een eigen badkamer.Er is een goed ingerichte keuken en een ruime van alle gemakken voorziene zitkamer. Een fantastisch 45 meter zwembad op 10 meter afstand. Locatie ligt goed t.o.v. centrum Kuah, winkelcentra en vele restaurants.De locale restaurants in Kuah leveren een goede kwaliteit voedsel voor weinig geld.Ook de meer westerse restaurants zijn prima en niet overdreven geprijsd. Alle stranden zijn met de auto binnen een half uur te bereiken.De stranden zijn zeer gevarieerd van zeer rustig tot gezellig druk; nooit overvol. Wegen zijn prima en er wordt rustig gereden. De appartementen zijn een aanrader voor iedereen die( itt in een hotel), graag wat mee krijgt van de cultuur en het dagelijkse leven op Langkawi. Recommended for: Sightseeing, Families with Young Children, Girls Getaway, Age 55+
