The Mpumalanga region
Mpumalanga is a province of South Africa. The name means east or "the place where the sun rises". Mpumalanga lies in eastern South Africa, north of KwaZulu-Natal and bordering Swaziland and Mozambique. The capital is Nelspruit (recently renamed to Mbombela).
The Drakensberg Escarpment divides Mpumalanga into a westerly half consisting mainly of high-altitude grassland called the Highveld. The eastern half is situated in low altitude, int the subtropical Lowveld/Bushveld. This is where Sudwala's Utopia Cottage is situated, close to Nelspruit and to the famous Kruger National Park which should not be missed to visit. Also the Panorama Route can be easily visited from us in a day trip. It is a mountainous area with lots of beautiful wonders of nature.
The Lowveld is subtropical. In summer the temperatures are from max. 32°C to min. 19°C, in winter from 23°C to 6°C. The winter months are dry. The summer months have some tropical rains.
Being in the Lowveld, but bordering to the mountenous area, there are many possibilities to be active like hiking, river rafting, abseiling to mention a few.
To drive to Sudwala's Utopia you will travel from the main roads on gravel roads through a forestall area where Eucalyptus and Pines are grown for the building and paper industries. On Peter's Rest Plantation, we grow trees along and up our hills where you are free to walk, have a 4x4 offroad fun or work hard with your mountain bike. In the flat area we grow Macademias and around the cottage and the farm house you can enjoy the lushness and beauty of our gardens and study the exceptional bird life
