Home description

Nestled at the gateway to the Kruger National Park, Khumbula iAfrica is your affordable, luxurious, air-conditioned and serviced 6 to 8-sleeper home in BIG FIVE country; complete with a private plunge pool, waterhole and lock-up garage. Indulge in the comfort of this thatched, cosy, well-appointed, self-contained cottage set in the tranquil surroundings of the African bushveld with a view over the Kruger National Park, that is frequented by abundant bird life and free-ranging game, large and small.

Explore the bushveld at your leisure, on foot, on a mountain bike, or by car, day or night, or experience the exhilaration of a microlight safari . Alternatively, simply enjoy your own braai (barbecue) over an open fire in our boma overlooking our private waterhole, or sip sundowners on our terrace with a view over the Kruger National Park, and listen for the jackal calling as you take in the most spectacular sunsets. Hunt for the constellations in an unpolluted African sky filled with a magical array of stars, and absorb the sounds of the African night. Awake to the majestic call of the distinguished fish eagle – the call of Africa.

It’s the comfort of home combined with outstanding service, the mood of the bushveld, the dust stirred by elephants, the thrill of nearby rhino, the fleeting glimpse of a leopard, the chilling roar of a lion, and the threatening gaze of the imposing buffalo right on your doorstep that bring guests back to Khumbula iAfrica…again and again.

The Mpumalanga region

Contrary to popular belief, there is no “right time” to visit the Kruger National Park. Although game viewing can be easier in winter when the veld is dry & game accumulate at water holes, in summer the vegetation is lush & bird populations peak. Summer is also lambing season for the antelopes. Autumn heralds the rutting season & all the drama it brings with it.

The climate is subtropical with very hot summers & warm, dry winters. Summer rains fall from October to March.

Kruger Park/Mpumalanga area

Kruger National Park: The Kruger National Park is one of the most famous national parks in the world, and more than a century old. It measures 350km north to south, and 60km at its widest point. It covers almost 2-million hectares. Khumbula iAfrica is located on the Park's southern boundary. Due to its sweet veld, this region of the Park is rich in game and bird life. The Park entrance is a short drive from Khumbula iAfrica, but an easy 5 minute walk brings you to the Crocodile River where you can amble along the fenced bank in safety whilst you watch the game coming down to drink. Regular sightings at the river include hippo, crocodile, elephant, rhino, lion, buffalo, waterbuck, kudu, bushbuck, impala, hyena, giraffe, fish eagles, saddle-billed storks and many other birds.

Barberton: This town is nestled in the foothills of the ancient Makhonjwa Mountains, the scene of the last gold rush in Mpumalanga in 1884. The façade of South Africa’s first stock exchange, built in 1887, still stands! The region is so abundant in gold that panning excursions can yield a wealth of flakes to visitors. The town also hosts a wealth of historically & archaeologically interesting sites. A guided trail through the 600m tunnel of the Fortuna hiking trail (2km) gives one the opportunity to see the most ancient rocks on earth.

Swaziland: This small kingdom offers a wealth of experiences. Its beauty and friendly, welcoming people and rich culture have so much to offer. Witness the spectacular Reed Dance performed by thousands of maidens in their charming traditional dress; watch parts of the sacred Ncwala Ceremony in which the King actively participates; thrill to the sight of energetic Sibhaca Dancers all brought to life with their colourful traditional dress and regalia. The many nature reserves throughout Swaziland are home to a variety of species, including the Big 5, prolific bird life and indigenous flora. Magnificent mountain scenery with rivers, waterfalls, and gorges; unique ancient rock formations, which are among the most ancient in the world; lush and fertile valleys; typical African bush; all make up the beauty that is Swaziland.

Matsamo Cultural Village: Matsamo Cultural Village portrays the traditions of the Swazi people as transferred from generation to generation. The Village consists of an art & craft centre, a restaurant in true African aesthetics and two authentic Swazi style Villages.

Microlight Safari: Sheer adrenaline and that free-as-a-bird feeling in a once-in-a-lifetime safari excursion of 30-minute or an hour over a game reserve and surrounding wilderness. A flight includes sightseeing over the Crocodile River and into the Kruger National Park, where game can be seen in abundance. As is to be expected, the views on this excursion are incredible. The microlight operation is professionally run and pilots give full pre-flight safety briefings as well as access to an intercom for in-flight communications.

Komatipoort: This scenic village lies at the confluence of the Crocodile & Komati Rivers with the Kruger National Park, Moçambique & Swaziland as its neighbours. It is South Africa’s closest town to Moçambique. The region holds enormous sentimental value for the people of Moçambique whose president, Samora Machel, died when his plane crashed south of the village.

How to get there

Khumbula iAfrica is situated at the Southern boundary of the Kruger National Park, which due to its sweet grasses is the most densely stocked region of the Park. The cottage is easily accessible from within the Kruger National Park and is only 15min drive from the nearest park gate.

Khumbula iAfrica is about 400km (4-hours drive) from Johannesburg International Airport and about 90km from Nelspruit Airport. Local scheduled flights are available between Johannesburg and Nelspruit: flying time +/- 45min. Car hire is available at both airports.

May 2006

It was a fantastic privilege that you allowed us to spend our honeymoon in a wonderful paradise. The peace and tranquility in a homely atmosphere was awesome. Shirley & Zac added to the warmth & nothing was too much trouble. On our last morning we were greeted by two locals - zebras - who shared some awesome peace with us grazing and sunning themselves. We will be back soon.

Marilyn and Chris
