The Limpopo Province region
Limpopo Province is located at the top of South Africa. Named after the second biggest river in South Africa. Tourism is one of the three pillars of the Limpopo economy along with mining and agribusiness. The R 93 million Provincial tourism budget for 2010/11 represents 11% of Limpopo's total budget. Whilst Limpopo is one of South Africa's poorest provinces, it is rich in wildlife which gives it an edge in attracting tourism. Both the private and public sectors are investing in tourism development. There are no really big cities in the province. While areas around hilly Tzaneen are lush and green, used for growing tea and grapes, much of it is bush. With relatively little water, huge swathes of the province are not suitable for agriculture and have been turned into private game farms, many of which are hunting concessions. For tourists more interested in shooting animals with a camera than a riffle, Kruger Park area is a network of private reserves that has built up into one of the richest game parks in the country. It is also within easy reach of airports, with some excellent lodges and a wide range of activities. The birdlife is also superb.
The famous Kruger National Park lies on the border of South Africa, Zimbabwe and Mozambique. It forms part of a conservation area covering 35 000 km2 which is approximately the size of the Netherlands!
