The Coastal Montenegro / Boka Kotorska Fjord region
Montenegro is the hidden gem of the Adriatic coast, it is warm, welcoming and incredibly beautiful. Tucked away, 30km from the coast, is the breathtaking scenery of the Boka Kotorska Fjord.
The only Fjord in the Mediterranean, Boka Kotorska is one of the worlds 25 most beautiful bays. Surrounded by high cliffs and rugged mountains, the beauty of the bay has to be seen to be believed.
The Kotor / Dobrota area
The World Heritage Site of Kotor rests at the south-east tip of the Fjord. Protected by UNESCO and fortified with formidable 20 metre high ramparts, Kotor is one of Europe's finest medieval towns. No traffic is allowed within the town walls, leaving you free to meander through the stoned paved streets, sample the array of pavement cafes and restaurants or browse through the attractive boutiques and waterfront markets.
The harbour is often frequented by the super yachts of the rich and famous who escape to the region to sample its welcoming atmosphere, superb food and breathtaking scenery.

Our second visit - we had to return to this well appointed apartment in its beautiful setting. If you like stunning scenery and a location far removed from the Costa's then this is the place for you. Your could spend the whole time sitting on the balcony watching the comings and goings up and down the fjord or just relaxing by the wonderfully private pool, although care needs to be taken around the pool when tiles get wet. But there is so much to see. A car, unless you don't mind public transport and are an ardent walker (steep uphill climb to the flat), is a must. The walk along the fjord, either to Kotor (about 1 mile away) or in the opposite direction, is a delight with little bays, where you can swim and a few bars and restaurants. Kotor is a world heritage site and a must see we especially enjoyed the walk up the walls, so interesting and the most stunning views. Perast (a few miles away in the opposite direction) is a little gem on the edge of the fjord by the 2 islands. Further afield Tivat has plenty of good swimming and lovely marina and wonderful walk along the sea front. Budva, a tourist seaside resort, has lovely old town and variety of restaurants. One of our favourite relaxing places was Beach Jazz which is a very scenic small beach, a few miles before Budva, turquoise water and empty beach with just a minimum of bars and only about 30 minutes drive away. A wealth of places to visit, next year we hope to go to the famous National Park and venture inland. We also found it one of the cheapest places we have visited in Europe - especially away from the touristy bits. On both visits we have travelled to Split in Croatia and make a real holiday by taking the ferry (9 hours through all the islands – and only £10 per person) and hiring a car in Dubrovnik. The road on the other side of the fjord is an absolute delight and a much easier route to and from Dubrovnik or the border using the car ferry.
