The Coastal Montenegro / Boka Kotorska Fjord region

Montenegro is increasingly being rediscovered as the 'Pearl of the Adriatic', and Kotor spectacularly lives up to its Unesco World Heritage designation enticing its visitor back again and again. Seven islands decorate the bay, and enjoying the gorgeous views over a glass of wine is an absolute delight, whether in one of the many piazzas of the old town, or in one of the beautiful restaurants that surround the bay.
At the head of southern Europe's deepest fjord, Kotor's setting is a place of stunning and dramatic natural beauty. The fortified Stari Grad (Old Town) nestles at the foot of a high cliff and is one of the most exquisitely preserved medieval cities in Europe. Its labyrinthine streets are awash with colour and atmosphere, with countless bars, churches and restaurants on hidden piazzas. Mountains protect the whole bay and the sea is indigo blue.
Lord Byron wrote “At the birth of our planet, the most beautiful encounter between the land and the sea must have happened at the coast of Montenegro.” It still retains its unmatchable natural charm and beauty and the Bay of Kotor is indubitably the jewel in its crown.
Architecture dating back to the 12th Century is still prevalent among the many heritage towns and villages. Montenegro’s natural beauty is dramatic; mountains dropping down to mirrored water in the UNESCO-protected Kotor fjord and the crystal clear waters of the Adriatic lapping the sandy beaches of the coast. Drive into the mountains to find river canyons (one being the second deepest the world), glacial lakes, untouched nature and a growing ski and eco-tourism industry.
There are many small beaches within a 15 min drive on the Adriatic coast, and activities galore for the more energetic; white water rafting, canoeing, paragliding, mountain climbing, biking, sailing and trips in a Flying Inflatable boat are all available in the area.
Practical Information:
The Climate is similar to Southern Italy and Southern Spain, so can be enjoyed all year round. On the coast, the climate is simply idyllic. It can rise to over 90F degrees in high summer but always feels fresh and pure, and of course it’s delightfully cooler inland. Whilst the "season" is considered to be May to Sept the cooler months of spring and autumn can have blissful weather. The currency is the Euro and Montenegro is widely expected to join the EU in the next few years
The Kotor / Muo area
Kotor is a historic city of traders and sailors, and its medieval architecture and cultural monuments have made it a Unesco listed "World Natural and Historical Site". Its narrow cobbled streets twist and turn, and constantly provide a hidden treasure to be discovered. Getting lost in this ancient maze is fantastic fun. Kids love it, sensing that they are somewhere truly special.
The Old Town is traffic free, and can be both peaceful and lively; enchanting and bustling by day with its array of cafes, restaurants and shops; romantic candlelight dinners by evening, and lively at night with many bars and great music. Regular carnivals and fiestas add to the charm of this beautiful, walled town.
Muo, on our doorstep, is a beautiful fishing village that runs along the fjord on a small narrow road looking out onto the water. There are a number of shops, bars and restaurants in the village with a lot of friendly faces around every corner.
Well worth the drive if you want to venture beyond Kotor is the magnificent Adriatic coastline starting from the Lustica Peninsula to Budva and beyond to Sveti Stefan, the choice resort for the rich and famous. Unmissable in our view are Perast, the unspoilt Venetian town overlooking the picturesque monastery of Gospa od Škrpjela (Our Lady of the Rock), set on its own island; Cetinje, the historic capital of Monenegro; while Budva, the racier, vibrant resort right on the beach, is also a short hop away. There are so many glorious villages and towns to visit, all within less than an hour’s drive.
If you prefer to stay local, you could stroll along the waterfront and admire the yachts, take a boat trip or enjoy the many watersports on offer. Or, just find yourself a quiet jetty and soak up the sun ! There are now three good guide books on the region – Lonely Planet Montenegro Travel Guide; The Rough Guide to Montenegro; Montenego - the Bradt Travel Guide; and Montenegro in Your Hands

| Airport: | Tivat: 5 km |
| Ferry: | Kotor: 3 km |
Flights:
The nearest airport is Tivat International, which is wonderfully located for our clients, just 10 mins from the apartment, Montenegro Airlines (http://www.montenegro-airlines.com/ ) fly to Tivat directly from Gatwick three times a week.
Another perfectly good option is Dubrovnik, in next door Croatia. Dubrovnik Airport is only a 70 km journey and a lovely straight drive and short ferry crossing.. There are more airlines that fly into Dubrovnik ( Aer Lingus, Easyjet, British Airways, Croatia Airways, ThomsonFly , FlyBe etc) so you can find flights a good bit cheaper than the so-convenient Gatwick -Tivat route.
Car Hire:
All the usual car hire companies are available at Dubrovnik and most at Tivat, and can be booked online. When booking, do check they are happy for the car to be taken over the border and inexpensive extra insurance is recommended for this, and remember, car headlights have to be switched on at all times in Montenegro, day or night.
The Drive From Dubrovnik: about one hour to 70 mins depending on traffic.
Turn left out of Dubrovnik airport and keep driving over the border crossing, straight through town of Herceg Novi (all on the same road) until you see the sign on the right for a Ferry, and a lane filtering off to the right. Take the little car ferry over (about 5 mins and 4 EUROS per car), then after driving off ferry turn right and keep following signs for Tivat or Tivat Airport.. After driving past the airport you will see signs to Kotor and Budva and then arrive at a major roundabout.Turn left for Kotor which is sign posted, through a short tunnel, then straight down the road until you reach the next round about here you turn left and reach Muo and the apartment in about 2 minutes drive from Kotor. We will give you more detail / landmarks etc upon booking.
The Drive From Tivat: about 10 to 12 minutes.
Turn right out of the airport, then turn first left (sign posted to Kotor via tunnel). You will get to a roundabout, then turn left and you will reach Muo in a couple of minutes.
Other options:
Upon request, through our local agent we can arrange for transfers or "meet and greet" to and from the airport for you. Although taxis are available, they may prove to be more costly / more time consuming than hiring a car.

An hour's drive from Dubrovnik airport, you can drive all round the coast or take the ferry like us. We had a apartment to ourselves - kitchen, sitting room, bathroom and 2 bedrooms and outside two balconies - more than spacious enough for us two, it could accommodate the whole family. The facilities are basic but have everything you need (fully fitted kitchen, plenty of wardrobe space etc.) - we were out and about most days and it was a perfect base for this. The locals all swim and sunbathe along the shorefront, but there are gorgeous beaches on a local headland 20 mins drive away. It's nice to sit on the balcony and just watch the world go by (with a glass of wine!) It's a 15 min walk to Kotor town, but outside of it enough to avoid the nightlife noise. Some lovely seafront restaurants near the house and in town. At night the town comes to life with locals strolling the promenade and the big yachts coming in will keep you entertained! Also, there's sea trips to local islands, around the coast - a nice change and very cheap. We had hired a car and drove to the towns and nature spots down the coast - very different and beautiful. It's a 5 min drive to the motorway to the rest of the country. We're definitely going back. |

Beautiful location. Nice apartment/house with a balcony where you can sit out overlooking the sea. Quiet too so it's a nice place to relax. The apartment is in good condition (it looks like it was refurbished recently) with all the necessary things for self-catering. Just a short walk to the town (Kotor) which is a nice place for restaurants/bars if you are looking for a change. |
