Villa Vouno (Mountain Villa)
from £90 /night help
Villa | 3 bedrooms | sleeps 6
Vouno villa (Mountain villa) is a tastefully furnished 3 bed villa and was built out of local stone using traditional methods, finished to the very highest standard.
The pool and pergola'd BBQ terrace are set up above the house, further up the hillside where you can while away the day in the pool whilst the eagles soar above your head or enjoy the nightime atmosphere with the blanket of stars above your head and the lights of the Venetian city of Chania twinkle down the bay. The house has two beautiful verandas at the front, one downstairs where alfresco eating is a pleasure and one upstairs that stretches the full width of the house and is furnished with a comfortable sofa and chairs. It also has a covered veranda at the side of the house, for shade from the sun. Also now with WIFI.
The pool area, as mentioned is set further up the mountain, TOTALLY private (Only the odd goat will see you skinny dip!) and is gated off for safety, so those with small children need not worry about them gaining access without parental supervision. The pool is 40sq metres in size, 1.2 metres at the shallow end and 1.8 metres at the deep end and is professionally cleaned and maintained. This area has comfortable sunloungers and sunshades for six people. The BBQ terrace has been planted out with local fruit trees and shrubs (2008). We have just completed (At great expense), an outdoor kitchen type area so that you can happily stay here all day and night if desired. We have a huge traditional stone charcoal BBQ to cook on here and a large table with six comfortable chairs, also a large pergola covering the whole area planted with local grapevines which add to the ambience up here. Perfect for an evening meal amongst the stars, or a midnight swim!
The house is perfectly set mid-way between Chania and Rethymno and great for exploring the less well known parts of West Crete as well as the fabulous cultures of the two cities mentioned.
The surrounding area is great for walking and exploring the flora and fauna of Crete and there are also fabulous little beaches in the area and numerous great tavernas and restaurants. The beautiful cities of Chania and Rethymon are around 30mins away each side of the villa where you can soak up the Venetian architecture, the Minoan archaelogical sites and the forts left from rule by the Turks. The more recent history is visable from the villa as up above the pool there still exists a WWII German bunker. This, for the brave, can be explored as it leads down to a series of caves and tunnels which eventually come out at the ruins of the monastry down below our house. There is a little church here called St Georges which is tiny and is still used. You will hear the bells softly peel out here on holy days.
From the verandas and the pool areas you can also watch the NATO vessels sail out into the Aegean, aircraft carriers, submarines, ferrys and smaller fishing craft, the bay always has something interesting to watch.
We like to think that our house offers something for everyone what ever age, excitement or rest, both are here.

The Chania Prefecture region
With 300 days of sunshine every year this island is like a country in minature. There is so much to see and enjoy, be it the history of the migration of 13,000 Venetians(20% of the population of Venice) in the 13th Century, who left behind beautiful tall Itallinite buildings and narrow cobbled streets along with their culinary influences and glass craft or the invasion of the Turks in 1680, whose great towering forts and buildings can be easily seen around the whole island.
The West of the island is incredibly lush and verdant and has the greatest number of wildflowers in the whole of Europe. The area where Villa Vourno is located is famous for the White mountains or Lefka Oria, which provide the stunning backdrop to the city of Chania. Chania itself has many wonderful shops and sights to see including the Old Cross Market where you will find every type of fresh local produce imaginable.
Chania is a Venetian city full of a mix of cultures and influences left from rule by the Venetians, the Turks, and more recently from the German occupation in WWII. Near to the house is the fort of Apetera which is thought to be around 4 thousand years old, and if you wander around both Chania itself and the large village near to the house, of Almyrida, you will easily see the excavation sites and beautiful mosaics on the floors of ancient villas inhabited by Cretean people of long ago.
The monastry below the villa has a series of caves which lead up eventually to an old German WWII bunker, this should only be attempted by those brave enough, with a torch and a love of small furry rodents!
The village of Kokkino Chorio itself is where the village scenes for Zoba the Greek where filmed in 1963 and is still recognisable as the same village even today. During the local religious festival (August) you will be warmly welcomed by the locals in the square to an evening of music, local wine and great food done on the spit roast.
This is the real Crete, enough of the infrastructure to have everything you need without all the tourists.
For younger visitors there is a fabulous water park, and go-kart circuit, around 30mins drive away from the villa on the far side of Chania at Limassol. You could quite happily spend a whole day here without getting bored. Lake Kornos is also worth a visit as the only fresh water lake in Crete. Here you can rent a pedalo, swim or generally take in the easy going atmosphere in one of the lake side tavernas. Across a little from Kornos is the long beach of Georgiopoli were the breakers from the Aegean make exciting swimming. There is also horse riding here and a few beachside tavernas. Inland, in the town of Vamos there is a lovely museum which tells the story of the local textile industry and how this has been revived by local women. Easter is also a truly wonderful time to visit the island as most of the major religious festivals take place then and the whole island comes out to celebrate, visitors cannot help but be drawn in.
In the slightly larger town of Kalives is a beautiful Greek Orthodox church, used on an almost daily basis, the doors are nearly always open and it is worth a peak inside just to see the amazing murals painted high on the ceilings and walls, opposite this church is the old water mill with an adjoining restaurant, the food here is excellent. You can while away a couple of hours over lunch while kids can play safely in the little square in front of the restaurant.
The smaller village of Almyrida has a great blue flag beach and restaurants right on the beach front. Our children have been known to finish dinner then play with their local friends on the beach as late as 11p.m.(No need to mention how wet and sandy their clothes were on return!!) . There is also a hotel here and several nice tavernas were local and live music can be enjoyed.
The larger town of Kalives (Where the church is) also has a great beach, more shingly in nature, this also has restaurants on the beach front and the larger hotel has just opened a bowling alley if you feel energetic!
There are too many wonderful sights to see and great things to do to mention here, my recommendation would be to spend every other day visiting somewhere new, and use the great facilities of the house inbetween.

"“Parting is such sweet sorrow”"
We returned yesterday from an 11 night family holiday in Villa Vouno Today we are booking our return next year! That pretty much says it all, but here is a bit more detail.
Villa Vouna is just 3 minutes drive from Kokkion Chorio, 5 minutes from the larger village of Plaka, with restaurants, shops etc, about 10 from the beach at Almyrida and 50 mins from the amazingly beautiful town on Chania. So although we felt that the buzz of life was very nearby, the villa itself feels completely private as behind the villa is just the steep mountainside . Fortunately the mountains never block the sun and the views from dawn til dusk are breathtaking, and need a far better camera than ours to really capture. There are 3 balconies, the large separate bbq area and the pool area from where you can enjoy this view. Not to mention from the windows of the villa itself, which is furnished for coolness after the heat outside. Each room is air-conditioned if required. It is also equipped with modern kitchen and new fittings, with ample crockery etc. along with telly, Playstation and dvd.
Wi-fi is not fast but worked fine until the last day when we lost it the “Greek BT” side of the router. The router itself was fine. We phoned Richard, the property manager, who made arrangements straight away. He came up also on the first day within 10 minutes when the water tank was empty.
We spent most of our time at the Pool, which someone came early in the mornings to clean, so it was a delight to swim in and had no 'chlorininess'. It being the end of August, there were wasps, just as in the UK, but we didn't bother them and they didn't really bother us; we just had to be careful not to step on them. As far as other insects go, Crete seems to be mostly immune from mosquitos and completely immune from flies!
The owner, Catherine, went the extra mile to keep us informed. Her daughters' tip for us was to go to Lake Kournos. We had a fantastic day there frolicking in the fresh water. There is something essentially hilarious about a Pedalo with a water-slide on the roof! Catherine also took the time to answer our questions and pointed us to the very good Kalives car hire people. You do need a car to stay at this villa unless you are a keen walker.
Overall experience was beyond Excellent!
Many thanks for leaving a review, I really appreciate it when guests take the time to do this when they've had a great time.
Glad you all enjoyed Kournos...it's fabulous isn't it!?? It would be one of our favourite places to spend the day as well. Last time we went my horrible (Only kidding about the horrible) kids decided to leave me stranded across the far side of the lake and leave me to swim back!! Lets just say I was ready for a drink when I reached the other side, and it wasn't Fanta!
I'll very much look forward to helping you all with your holiday next year....until then, I hope this keeps you going.
Best Regards, catherine

"Perfect, peaceful and fun for all."
This is many holidays wrapped into one. You can have a completely peaceful uninterrupted all but the odd goat bell. Adjoined to this, quiet coves and family run tavernas in abundance or you can enjoy lively tavernas beaches that are vaguely busy with all types of non motorized water sports. Site seeing and history in a short trek to Chania, white mountains, fresh water lakes and gorges for the walkers. The beaches are all very clean and safe and snorkeling around the rocks wasted many hours for us all. You can be served on the beaches or drag yourselves 20 yards to the nearest taverna. The Villa it's self is set at the highest point on the hill side so completely secluded with stunning views of the Island and bluest of blue seas. The layout of the Villa and decor gives it a very welcoming, homely feel finished in beautiful local stone. The balconies are very large and to die for. If this isn't enough then a few steps away is the elevated pool and huge bar-b-q area where we spent many a happy evening eating and watching shooting stars. Having a car is a must which allows you to travel to many places of wonder and made it perfect for my 70 year old parents who came with us this time. We also have a 17, 12 and 8 year old who were constantly entertained at the Villa with the beautiful pool and to top it off my teenager had access to WIFI much to her delight.
To top it off the owners are 100% devoted to making your stay perfect and are only a call away for any queries. There are also people living locally who work for the owners that will help you with anything that is a problem. They were all fantastic and made the whole experience an absolute pleasure. Thank you from all the Cathcart Family.
Many thanks for your great review. When you were with us a few years ago, I know you were delighted then and I was anxious that you would all have a great experience this time, especially because you brought your parents. I was also particularly delighted with your news and hope that your new arrival next will also get the opportunity to visit Villa Vouno some year (Greek baby names?????...only kidding!!).
Anyway, my thanks again for leaving a review and please do keep in touch; I regard everyone who loves the place the way we do as family and love to hear all their news!
Til you make it out again,
Best Regards, Catherine

"The perfect place to relax, recharge in peaceful surroundings"
Just returned from a wonderful trip to Chania, Villa Vouna perfect, set in a beautiful location on the edge of a mountain. View was breath taking stunning!! Area was very quiet and peaceful with a wonderful aroma of herbs which growing wild on the mountain and also they are grown in the fantastic gardens. The pool located above the Villa along beside a hugh BBQ terrace wonderful at night when the sun goes down! Some bees around the pool but they are friendly!!!!
Many thanks for taking the time to review the place...and your great photo's as well!! If the weather wasn't so good at home at present I'd be crying at the thought of not being in Crete right now.
Glad you had a good time and now that there are direct flights from Dublin, maybe we'll see you again!!
Best regards, Catherine

"A fantastic base to explore a beautiful island"
Just returned from a glorious week at Villa Vouno. We went in search of a calm, relaxing week in a beautiful setting and that's exactly what we got. The sunsets alone make the villa worth visiting, as are the views which stretch over the whole of Chania.
Part of what makes the view from the villa so great is how far up the mountain it's positioned. It is absolutely essential to hire a car when visiting (the nearest shop is a few kilometres away), so wouldn't suit those that want to be right in the heart of town. But if it's tranquility you're after then you couldn't find a more charming villa! We found Kalives Travel (car rental) very helpful, they were able to get us a car at the last minute and came out immediately when we thought there was an issue with it.
We had a couple of lovely meals at The Retreat restaurant next door. It's a real asset given that all other tavernas are a drive away - it gave our assigned driver a few nights off! Also, Almyrida has some lovely beach-side cafes and restaurants. The locals are very proud of their beautiful island and only too happy to help tourists to see the best of it.
Chania Old Town is also well worth a visit. It's actually quite a way from Villa Vouno so we tied it in with our flight home and went there on the last day. There's a very handy luggage storage at the bus station so for 1 Euro we could drop our suitcases off, explore the town and then head back to get a bus to the airport.
We will definitely return to Crete. It is such a breathtakingly beautiful island and Villa Vouno really shows it off in the best light. Thank you Catherine for all your help and guidance in planning the trip.
Many thanks for taking the time to leave a review; your great tip for leaving luggage has already been passed on to several guests who are about to head out soon. I am so glad that you really enjoyed yourselves.
I hope your holiday keeps you going for quite a while, or at least until you come back to visit Villa Vouno.
Many thanks again,

"Beautiful villa, wonderful views, lovely Spring flowers..."
We flew into Chania on 22nd April and were met by our car rental chap who was very friendly and helpful; he drove ahead of us to the villa, stopping on the way at Kalyves to allow us to pick up some groceries. Unfortunately, having requested a Scenic or equivalent, we actually received a much smaller car (which we accepted, as two of our party had had to forego the trip due to family bereavement) with a slighter engine, which was not capable of making it to the top of the steep drive to the house. We were able to cope with his; we left the car further down the drive and went the rest of the way on foot, but would stress that less mobile visitors would find this very hard, so the advice is: hire a car which likes hills! Once you've made it to the top of the drive, the villa has one ground floor bedroom and bathroom and you can avoid the stairs and enjoy the main floor's terrace and balcony area (although there are steps up to the pool and barbecue terraces).
The villa itself makes the climb well worthwhile. The interior is clean, comfortable and the facilities perfect for a family/friends' holiday. Outside, the ample terraces allowed us to enjoy the panoramic views of Souda Bay and the mountains at different times of day. The swimming pool area and house are surrounded by flowers and the mountainside behind and beside the house was alive with the colours of Spring flowers and the sounds of bees, birdsong and, depending on the day, the sheep or goats with their jangling bells. We were also treated on a few occasions to the shepherd's/goatherd's singing!
The weather was great- not too hot, but comfortably warm during the day. We delighted in the gorgeous sunrises (me) and sunsets (everyone), the sunbathing and even the rather dramatic windiness at night! From here, we were able to pop down to the beaches within 10-15 minutes and eat at a variety of friendly little restaurants at the water's edge in Kalyves and Almerida. A drive into the mountains allowed us to explore the landscape with hidden ruined monasteries, hamlets and villages. A morning in (C)hania gave us the opportunity to visit the atmospheric Venetian Harbour and charming little streets. further afield, we loved our day out to visit the ancient palace at Knossos (a 2-hour drive approximately), I have to admit that the rest of the time was spent lazing near the pool, reading and gazing out to sea, as the villa was such a delight! Many thanks to Catherine for her advice, information and for allowing us to share her lovely second home.
Many thanks for taking the time to review the villa...your description brings it all back to me in wonderful detail! I really hope you make it back again, this time with your friends who were unable to make it.
I hope your time there has tickled your appetite for the place and that we see you again soon, to explore some more.
Best Regards, Catherine

"Relaxing family holiday"
We spent a week in May in the villa with two kids. Quiet place, clear and well-equipped villa with fantastic sea view. The owner is very kind and helpful, we had a nice welcome dinner, too. The house is cool - the temperature and the castle design :)
Beaches and Chania are easy to reach by car, we would recommend this villa for relaxation.
Be aware: insect protection needed, even inside the house.
Thanks for the nice holiday!
Glad you all enjoyed your holiday, it was my pleasure to help you organise everything and I really hope we do see you folk again as discussed!
Thanks again for reviewing the villa.

"Brilliant family holiday"
We booked Villa Vouno for our Easter trip to Crete. The villa very comfortably accomodated 3 adults and 2 small children. The property met our expectations in terms of location and facilities it was comfortable and well equipped. The villa is in a stunning location secluded but not isolated. We loved seeing and hearing all the goats as they munched their way around the surrounding area (careful to keep the gate shut). The local villages are a short drive a way and offer a variety of very good value tavernas. The local supermarkets are also good and due to there being an expat community it was easy to obtain a few home favorites for the kids. The owner Katherine was very helpful giving us plenty of information prior to the trip, her recommendations for car hire worked out very well for us and ultimately I felt Katherine worked hard to ensure we had an enjoyable stay. Crete is not an island that can be covered in a week so we didn't try, none the less we did a lot of day trips visiting Hania, the botanical gardens, and Rethimnon, Kotsifos Gorge and Preveli beach (which was stunning) before heading back to Heraklion via Bali beach. Equally we enjoyed just spending time at the local beach. My only wish would have been for warmer weather to actually then be able to spend and enjoy more time just lazing around the pool at the villa. Having said that it (Crete) wasn't crowded with tourists, the landscape was green and there were wild flowers galore. I would be very happy to recommend this villa and location - Crete offered a very easy going relaxed holiday and the generosity of the locals was amazing.
Many thanks for your great review; it is a lovely time of year to visit (All the flowers being out as you say),I hope you get many months of benefit from your holiday and that we see you visit again soon.
Many thanks, Catherine

"Nice view but villa needs updating."
Good location, stunning views but the villa is now not quite the same as the photos. After a number of years' use it is showing signs of wear and tear and could do with some TLC. For example, t… More
Thank you for your review; I feel I must point out that with Tripadvisor, I have the option to confirm or deny this review, but have chosen to have it posted as I wish to address some of the points you have made FACTUALLY:
a) The sofa you were made aware of prior to booking as I have made all my other guests aware this summer, and is to be replaced in 3 weeks when I have no further guests, otherwise guests have nowhere to sit! I did discount summer weeks HEAVILY (By £260 after your story of being unable to afford it the previous year) for your party and responded in great detail to help you to print off your Ryanair boarding passes, as well as assist you with car hire and a number of other things.
b) Your highly misleading statement about the toaster is untrue.
c) There are three umbrellas; maybe you hadn't put the others up as they are taken down in high winds for obvious reasons, but they ARE there for guests to use.
d) I think you might be referring to solar lights I have in to make the garden pretty; these sometimes get blown over and are not used for anything other than decorative reasons. The main lights are working perfectly.
e) The pool is professionally maintained twice a week and you did acknowledge yourself that Richard came up in less than ten minutes of being informed that there was a problem. You told me you noticed the filter not working the day after your arrival; however you waited for five days (As you state in your email) before telling me that there was a problem. I do not understand this as the pool was made right a matter of hours after being informed. People do not like maintenance crews being up every day and usually choose a villa rather than a hotel so that they can have privacy; my instruction document clearly states that Richard and Anne are there to deal with any problems and will sort things as soon as they are told about them, as they did.
f) Truthfully, I have never had anyone complain about toilet rolls or fruit trees for that matter!!!!!!
The fruit trees are just part of the garden and fully visible in the pictures (Which were taken last year incidentally, by guests from Ohio as I am no good at photography!!). Neither have I ever had anyone complain about the showers or bedrooms, which are all done the same way in Greece!!
g) I have never had anyone tell me both by phone and Email, that they enjoyed their stay, then ask, some time after their return, for a refund.
In conclusion, I have many guests who return every year, where there is the odd problem it is sorted out as quickly as possible, and indeed the two reviews before yours are from guests who stayed following your return home, one of whom has re-booked for next year.
Thank you for taking the time to post a review,I hope that your next holiday proves more successful.
With regards, Catherine
