The Chania Prefecture region
Crete is the most southerly and largest of the Greek islands (180 miles long by 40 miles wide) & so there are many areas to explore including; walking in the Samari Gorge (Europe's longest gorge at 18km), boating on Lake Kournas, driving through the White Mountains, discovering the many beaches or wandering the historic cities of Chania, Reythimon or Heraklion.
Chania is a great old town where you can wander the narrow lanes until you come to the Venetian built harbour lined with restaurants and bars. Boat trips and horse and carriage rides are available and nearby there is a water park with both gentle and scary rides!
As the home of Europe's earliest civilisation, Crete has many ancient ruins including Knossos Palace, the ancient home of King Minos & the Minotaur where according to Greek myth Icarus began his ill fated flight.
Crete has 300 days of sunshine every year with temperatures ranging from low 20's to high 30's from April to October. Outside this period the temperatures are usually in the mid teens.
Kokino Horio is a traditional Cretan village in the mountains with 2 tavernas selling local food and a small grocery store. The film Zorba the Greek was filmed here. Just outside the village is a small beach in a quiet cove which is secluded, picturesque and perfect for snorkeling and diving. The nearest taverna is a 10 minute walk from the Villa.
The Blue Flag sandy beaches of Almyrida Bay are only a 10 minute (3 mile) drive from the house. The beaches here are very safe for children as they shelve very gently into the sea. There are over 20 restaurants, bars and shops and you can also rent kayaks, windsurfs, sailing boats & bicycles.
There are no large hotels and so Almyrida has a quiet environment that livens up in the evening as the beach front restaurants and bars fill up with diners.
The bigger seaside town of Kalives with beaches, restaurants, bank and supermarket is a further 10 minutes drive from Almyrida

"Lovely villa, very peaceful and well equipped!"
Villa Challis is a lovely, peaceful and well equipped villa. The villa is far enough away from the hustle and bustle of the busy resorts but not too far away so that you don't feel like exploring some of the lovely beaches. The only downside is that Crete can be quite windy and as you are up on a hill you can feel this a bit more than we had expected. However, the villa and its great amenities more than made up for it! Definitely great value for money and we would be happy to return!
I am pleased that you enjoyed your stay at Villa Challis. Sorry it was a bit windy when you were there. You are right - occasionally you do get a breeze, though sometimes this can be a pleasant relief. We have just been there for 2 weeks ourselves and we could have done with the odd breeze! Thanks very much for your great review.

"A little bit of paradise!"
We had a wonderful holiday at Villa Challis. The villa was well equipped,it had everything you could think of. I even said to my husband if I was so inclined I could bake a cake, it simply had every utensil you could wish for. The villa was spacious with the most wonderful views of the sea and the mountains, what we liked was its seclusion but still being only a few minutes away from the village and the coast. The wildlife was amazing, we had a snake and a hedgehog in the garden plus millions of cicades that sang from morning till night. The pool was beautiful and kept so clean by the property managers, all in all everything was fantastic and we can't find a bad thing to say about it. Thank you to the Challis's for letting us rent your home.
We are really pleased that you had such a wonderful holiday at Villa Challis. We have actually baked a number of cakes there for our childrens' birthdays! However, we have never seen a snake - that must have been exciting! Thank you very much for your very positive comments.

"Lovely Villa, Stunning Location, Great weather !"
Our first visit to Crete and also the first outside of main school holidays. We were not disappointed about either aspect. Crete is a beautiful island and the villa, close to a small village, overlooking Souda Bay was a great base to explore. The villa itself has the advantage of it's own pool - very necessary in the warm weather. To get best advantage from the location, the living room and balconies are on the first floor and the views across Souda Bay were superb. The villa is well appointed and the gas barbecue was well used. There is a good local restaurant (10 minutes walk) and the best choice of restaurants is around a 10 minute drive away. The beach at Almyrida is beautiful (and again a 10 minute drive away) but worth the effort. There are many places to visit; Chania, Rethimno and lake Kournas to name but a few.The use of a car is highly recommended. Hope to visit again.

"Tranquil, great location and perfect to escape the rat race."
Having arrived in the dark late at night, opening the curtains on the first morning at Villa Challis and seeing both the mountains and turquoise sea was jaw dropping -ly awesome. It made sense of the bendy roads I had driven up the night before, which slowed me down mentally to proper holiday mode. You really want for nothing at the villa. The lounge upstairs ensures there is always a welcome breeze and a snooze on the hammock is a must. The gas barbecue works like a dream complimenting a well equipped kitchen. There is a lovely shady area to sit outside the kitchen with wind blinds if necessary. The pool is perfect, with sunbeds, chairs, shades and views to inspire. At night millions of stars make the whole place quite magical. It is easy to stay here, removed from the pace of a working week and with a couple of trips for provisions, there are books, games, pool inflatables to keep you occupied if lazing around proves all too much. You can listen to your own music or play with the Play Station or even watch films at your leisure. The villa is in a good location to explore the western end of Crete and there are plenty of excursions offered from nearby villages where there is plenty of entertainment and a wide range of restaurants/cafes. Take a good pair of trainers as there are many walking/trekking opportunities. We walked the Samaria gorge which was wonderful and something we will never forget. If you have snorkelling equipment take that too as there is plenty to see. A read of the visitors book at the villa gives you a good idea of what others have done. Guide books and maps are also at your disposal during your stay which is really helpful. Oh yes and the air-conn was much appreciated during our stay as we had wonderful weather.

"Perfect holiday home from home"
Fantastic villa with great facilities and perfect location. Paul couldn't have done more for us - we asked lots of questions about suitability for our 18 month old and as well as all the bits already on site (high chair, cot, lots of toys - a life saver having had to fly with minimal luggage!) he went out of his way to improvise stair gates for us. The villa is simply but beautifully decorated - we loved the exposed stone walls. Bags of living space, all you could need in the kitchen etc. We really loved though, the different terraces and spaces providing sun and shade throughout the day, lovely places to sit, have lunch etc. The pool is fab and despite not being heated was warm enough in June. The location is really special. There is a villa next door (empty during our visit!) but it doesn't really overlook and apart from that it's down a quiet track, surrounded by fields with dry stone walls, olive trees and herds of bell-bearing goats. Views from the upstairs balcony fantastic - watching the sunset over the sea doesn't get much better. And amazing starry skies. Great supermarket in local village and lots of amenities in Almerida. You do need a car but driving feels relative safe in Crete so no problem. When we could bear to leave the villa (we got lazy!) we did go to the beach some days and ventured further afield to Georgopolis & Stavros beaches. Hania recommended. We wanted peace, seclusion and a beautiful location with beaches nearby. And it fitted the bill perfectly. We'll be back...

"Wonderful family holiday in Crete"
The villa was, in one word, exceptional. It was easy to locate but positioned perfectly away from the local towns which gave us the privacy that we sought. The villa is maintained by a lovely english couple who live locally and are always available to give helpful advice (where to go and what to see) as well as ensuring the villa is in tip-top condition at all times.
