About this location
The Chania Prefecture region
The Crete region
Beautiful Crete and Chania, a heavenly and pure land brimming with natural beauty, history, memory and culture. It is a land whose visitors will experience nature in all its glory and will encounter breathtaking sights.
Endless stretches of seashore bordered in frothy lace, inlets and islands of exotic beauty and sandy beaches tucked away at the foot of forbidding mountains. Impenetrable but yet such majestic gorges, holy caves, blessed rivers and lush, green plateaus thickly covered with olive and citrus trees. It is a self-sufficient land in every way that is rich in endemic and rare flora and fauna. We highly recommend that you take a stroll in the city centre of Hania which is steeped in history; a sightseeing tour of the crossroads and the winding cobbled paths of civilizations with the starting point being the most central point in Hania: the Municipal Market or the Agora. The Venetian old town with its harbour and Lighthouse, with its excellent restaurants and shops will fascinate you!
The Apokoronas region spreads to the east of Chania with its seaside villages enjoying excellent views to the entrance of Souda bay and the Akrotiri peninsula across. It is a very fertile area (olive trees, vines, avocado trees, orange lemon and mandarin trees) with several sandy beaches at Almirida, Kalives and Georgioupolis. Apokoronas is one of the most picturesque areas of the province of Chania with many attractive and authentic villages like Armeni, Nio Chorio, Samonas, Ramni etc.
There are wonderful walks in this lush area, including the Diktamos Gorge and several others along countryside paths through orange and lemon groves, by the sides of rivers Xidas and Koiliaris. Extending several kilometers inland it is rich in olive and citrus groves, pasture lands and tiny hamlets rarely visited by tourists. In the spring-time, the fields, groves and tracks are filled in endless varieties of flora including many species which are endemic to Crete. Birdwatchers will find a large number of local as well as migratory birds to see, ranging from tiny warblers to large buzzards, eagles and hawks.
Kokkino Chorio (or “Red Village”) is a beautiful and quiet village situated in the Apokoronas area, 28 km off Chania on the way to Rethymno city. Already appreciated by Hollywood location hunters, the straggly village was the filming location for the village scenes of the 1964 film Zorba the Greek starring Anthony Quinn. Filled with pretty tiny lanes and low houses with old Venetian arches, it will transport you instantly to another era. Kokkino Horio is also known for a wide underground bunker network used in World War II by the Germans to watch over Souda Bay for security and comfort. From the point of Cape Drapano there was a cable-way to the entrance of the bunker. Located by the watchtower, 2km outside Kokkino Horio, they were equipped with amenities such as a movie theatre and a restaurant – all derelict now. In the village central square is the central church and facing it you will find a kafeneio serving local delicacies or handmade breakfast dishes from scratch. Around the corner, you can find a couple of small shops and cafes, a bakery and mini market selling a range of household essentials along with British staples like mint sauce. On the edge of the village and within 5 min. walking distance of the villas is the Glass blowing factory in the village with a bio taverna attached. You can recognise it from the impressive piles of glass bottles outside it. If you feel like combining holiday time with learning, you can watch demonstrations of the glass blowing process or simply buy original hand-crafted glass pieces for your friends and family back home.Kokkino Horio is ideally located as the starting point for many walks and private excursions with private transport around the area.
The nearest beach is Koutalas (1.5 km): Isolated and unspoilt beach, close to the edge of Cape Drepano with interesting cave formations, like the 'Elephants' Cave'. Make sure that you have all the necessities, such as shade, food and water.
