The hilltop village of Kokkino Horio, with its narrow streets and topsy-turvy houses, was the main village location for the film “Zorba the Greek”. With an elevated position on the rural outskirts of the village, Bay View Villa enjoy breathtaking panoramic views of Souda Bay and The White Mountains, to the Akrotiri Penisula where the sun sets beautifully and the lights twinkle at night. This setting is dramatic and peaceful, but also conveniently close to the taverna and well stocked mini market in the village centre, and only a few kilometres from the sandy beach and many amenities in Almyrida.
The current owner's father was a swimming pool designer in Athens so it is therefore no surprise that the pools at Bay View Villas are beautifully made and have a unique feature that everyone will love. At one end of the marble edged pools there is a built-in bench situated next to hydro massage jets. This may be most enjoyable at night when romantic couples could experience a relaxing hydro massage whilst sipping a cocktail and looking out over the moonlit bay. A small grassy lawn next to the pool terrace is ideal for younger family members to play whilst their parents relax.

|Further details outdoors|
Special emphasis has been put on the outside areas at Bay View Villa. Bay View Villa 1 has sliding doors that lead out from the modern and comfortably furnished living room and bedrooms to the many terraces which provide for both sun and shade.
Bay View 1 has a large and more private outside area, which is equipped with an ample supply of garden furniture such as tables, chairs, umbrellas and sun-loungers. Because the outside dining terrace and the pool terrace are both blessed with spectacular views, we find that most of our guests spend the majority of their time eating and relaxing outside. A large pergola covered communal barbecue area. It is equipped with a brick barbecue, a traditional oven, a sink, and a wooden table and chairs. A portable barbecue is also available for the use of the guests.
Clever landscaping, minimal screening, and use of the natural contours of the land provide almost total privacy. An electric gate at the bottom of the plot opens onto a long driveway made of natural flagstones, which leads uphill to the villa, which has its own private parking area.
The entire property is bordered by low Cretan stone walls and flowerbeds planted with leilandai, roses, geraniums, and olive trees. The acres of land surrounding the property is made up of rocky outcrops interspersed with almond trees, olive trees, and an infusion of colourful wild flowers in the spring.
The Chania Prefecture region
Crete has everything you that could possibly want from a holiday: soaring mountains that are snow capped from November to June, many great walking trails including Europe's deepest gorge, ancient archaeological sites and Minoan palaces, quaint villages, sparkling clear blue seas with tavernas serving freshly caught fish, golden beaches, glorious wild flowers in the Spring, and a variety of delicious foods which are all made from healthy home grown produce.
As incredible as the island is, it is the Cretan people who will make your holiday truly memorable. Descendants of the Minoan's, one of Europe's earliest civilizations, and shaped by centuries of struggle against oppression, the Cretans are as rugged as the mountains, fiercely independent but passionately friendly.
Bay View Villa is located in the heart of The Apokoronas Region just east of the beautiful town of Chania. With its stunning Venetian harbour, quayside bars and restaurants, what better place to relax and watch the world go by. In the narrow streets behind Chania's harbour you will find tavernas, bars, the famous covered market, and many local shops selling handicrafts, textiles, jewellery and hand made ceramics. Visit 'Leather Lane' for outstanding hand made leather bargains.
The climate of Crete is a temperate Mediterranean climate and the weather is characterized by long hot, dry summers and mild winters. The Spring can be warm and sunny during the day but still have cooler evenings and is perfect for walking, birdwatching and looking at the wild flowers. All in all Crete is absolutely perfect for your Villa holiday.
Kokkino Horio taverna and mini market are an 8 minute walk from Bay View Villa. The family run-taverna is shaded by weeping willow trees, and has delicious food and very friendly owners (Zacharias and his son Yiannis) who know everything about the village and the surrounding area.
During the summer months there are occasional live Cretan music nights at the taverna (once a month or so), which are a lot of fun. Kokkino Horio (“red village” in Greek) was the main village set for the film “Zorba the Greek”. There are little whitewashed houses and narrow streets that wind around the village centre. At the village kafenion you can find older locals who were used as extras in the film, and they will happily show you photos of themselves with Anthony Quinn.
Just 15 minutes walk from Bay View Villa is the famous glass blowing workshop with a taverna that serves organic food and wine. Here you can watch recycled glass being blown in the traditional manner, into amazingly beautiful products including lampshades, ornaments, decanters, plates and bowls. There is a third taverna on the outskirts of the village with lovely views.
The lovely village of Almyrida is only 3.7km from Bay View Villa, and is built around a pretty crescent shaped sandy beach, with a small fishing harbour at the eastern end. The beach is very shallow and safe, which is good news if you have children or are not a strong swimmer. Lining the beach are 7 excellent tavernas, 10 café/bars, 2 bakeries, a wonderful jewellery shop, 5 mini-markets, 3 gift shops,a pharmacy, an organic fruit and vegetable shop with a deli counter, a butcher's shop, and an off-license. Also in Almyrida there is a scuba diving office, a water sports centre which rents out kayaks, windsurfers and catamarans, and Villas Crete Holidays for tourist information, boat trips, horse riding, guided walking tours, and guided coach excursions.
A few minutes by car from the villa, there are a huge variety of archaeological sites and traditional villages with wonderful tavernas. There is also an interesting selection of small craft centres and museums, including glass blowing in Kokkino Horio, lace makers in Gavalohori, and silk makers in Kalamitsi. For those of you looking for even more activity, the historic town of Chania is only 45 minutes away by car.
Cooking classes and wine tasting set at a local winery can be taken by those of you who are interested. Guided walks led by experts in mountaineering and/or flora and fauna can also be arranged. For those of you who prefer to venture out on your own, a copy of the guide book "Crete on the Road" by Frankie Miles comes with every villa. The book contains detailed directions to many well known and hidden sites, opening times and prices for all attractions, taverna recommendations, and the only existing map of the National Highway showing the exits and entrances.

"Perfect tranquility with stunning views, great village & taverna"
The view from the villa covered the whole of Souda bay including views to the Chania peninsular. The friendly local village shop supplied anything one might need and Yiannis's mother at the local taverna was a great cook! This was an ideal base with lots of surrounding small villages to explore or while away some time chilling at the local tavernas. For shoppers Chania is a short drive away with a beautiful harbour ringed with tavernas.Lots of Venetian and Ottoman ruins/remains in the area. The villa was well supervised and adequate for anyone's needs although not immense and the pool was beautiful but only for the brave in mid October! All round verdict - for seekers of beauty and tranquility this is a wonderful traditional place with lovely friendly people - great stress reliever.
