The South Thailand / Krabi region
Southern Thailand consists of 14 provinces: Chumphon, Ranong, Surat Thani, Phangnga, Phuket, Krabi, Nakhon Si Thammarat, Trang, Phatthalung, Songkhla, Satun, Pattani, Yala and Narathiwat. The region, located on the peninsula, extends from Chumphon to the Thai-Malaysian border and is bordered in the east by the Gulf of Thailand, to the west by the Indian Ocean.
Lush tropical islands, palm-fringed beaches, coral reefs teeming with colourful marine life, picturesque fishing villages, remote national parks, forested mountains, cascading waterfalls, ubiquitous rubber estates, and the juxtaposition of temples and mosques clearly define the region's visual appeal.
CLIMATE: Generally, one can rely on consistently fine weather and calm seas on the western side of the Thai peninsula from November to March and on the eastern side from May to September.
The south west monsoon season, which lasts for 6 months from May to October, brings rain and squalls to the coastal areas of the Andaman Sea. There is another rainy period caused by the north east monsoon, which brings heavy rain to the coastal areas along the Gulf of Thailand from November to September. However, there are frequent periods of fine weather during the monsoon seasons. Tourists who wish to take a boat to any remote island during the monsoon seasons are advised to check the weather before beginning the trip.
Koh Lanta Island area
Koh Lanta Island -A worthwhile journey. Set just off Thailand's South Western coastal town of Krabi on the east side of Phuket. Koh Lanta Yai is the unique, unspoiled tropical isle, preserving the community spirit in both family and business life. With clear cool waters and superb white-sand beaches stretching along the 27 kilometres coastline, its paradisical appeal remains unmarred by mass tourism. The Island also boasts a mountain range covered in rain forest, and reaches a height of almost 500 metres at its' extreme ends.
What to see: Koh Lanta National Marine Park The Koh Lanta National Marine Park is situated at the southernmost tip of the island, at the end of a spectacular drive along the coast. Along the way, you will enjoy with many beauty sceneries of rainforest mountain and coastline. Visit some small resorts before national park for cool smoothies or a light meal is recommended.
Jungle Walk Khao Mai Kaeo Cave- For a deep adventure turns off the road mid-island at the village of Klong Nin Village and follows the dirt road through shady stands of rubber trees to Mai Kaew Caves.
Waterfall Walk Take Koh Lanta's waterfall walk and enjoy the magical sight of fresh, clear spring waters gushing down the mountain.
Lanta Old Town The picturesque old capital town is definitely worth visiting for a glimpse into the island's past. The Chinese style timber shop house date back 100 years when it became the commercial centre for the island's fishermen and farmers.
Mangrove Forest (by Kayaking and Canoeing) Along the thirty kilometres east coastline of Koh Lanta rich mangrove forests grow richly, creating interesting effects in the landscape. Take a kayak or Canoe, and explore tiny islands with limestone cliffs over one hundred metres high; discover large and small caves to paddle about in.
Klong Nin Beach A little further south still, with a similar atmosphere to klong Khong, is Klong Nin Beach. stretching for a few kilometres, emerald green waters lap next to the golden sandy beach, which is covered with various tropical trees, such as coconut and pine. With a back drop of shimmering green mountains covered in tropical rain forest, relaxing in the shade on this quiet beach is stunning.
Dive & Snorkelling Sites The Andaman coast has two of the oldest and most diverse ecosystems on the planet - the coral reefs and the South-east Asia rainforest - co existing together. Much of the marine life located here is at the extreme northern of southern end of its' geographical range, thus creating a huge variety in the underwater world. Imagine gliding weightlessly over colourful coral, surrounded by a dazzling array of tropical fish and marine life, with visibility as perfect as transparent glass.
