The Sri Lanka Southern Coast region

Ambalangoda is famous for it's wooden masks and puppets, also has a fair share of beautiful white sandy beaches. There are several famous Buddhist temples close to Ambalangoda.

Bentota is another major beach resort of the island with many large hotels with beach fronts, beautiful sandy beaches and shallow waters. There is a popular fresh water lagoon which is a
popular water racing location.

Hikkaduwa is a popular surfing town with magnificient coral reefs with abundance of tropical fish, beautiful clear waters and white sand beaches, ship wrecks for diving Hikkaduwa is a place for all the water
sports you could imagine, and plenty of shops and restaurants .

Unawatuna (4 Km south of Galle) has probably the best beach in the west coast of Sri Lanka, a popular tourist destination is a also a breeding ground for turtles. Legend say that Unwatuna was created from a piece of earth from Himalaya, that had fallen from Hanuman in the Ramayanaya epic.

Galle is the capital of the southern province is a city with a colourful history. UNESCO declared World Heritage Site the magnificent Dutch fort is the most popular attraction of the town. 300 year old
Dutch atmosphere is still very much alive around the fort and amidst its many historical buildings
not invaded by the skyscrapers. The beautiful beach of Unawatuna is just 6km south east of the
city centre.

Matara is the southern most major town in Sri Lanka and the terminus of the coastal rail line has also been under the Portuguese and Dutch rule. The star shaped fort at Matara is an unusual and a unique structure. There are several beautiful and less crowded beaches along the coast between Galle and Matara and the closest to the town is at Polhena. Another attraction is a 25m high colourful Buddha statue built at Veherahena Temple. The temple is about 2 kM from the town centre and about 1 Km inland from Pallimulla on the main
road.

Koggala / Galle area

Atmospheric Capital of the Southern Province, Galle boasts of a long history stretching back centuries, even before the Portuguese, Dutch and British Colonial days. Today it is home to the historic 90 acre preserved Dutch Fort, declared an archaeological reserve by the UN since 1969. This walled city is the slow beating heart of Galle, bearing witness to its past through the near crumbling architecture of grand old buildings, street names and Dutch churches. The sounds of Galle are the call to prayer from Mosques, Pali chants from Buddhist temples, fish sellers and tinkers hawking their wares on Main Street. Its fine old colonial mansions, narrow streets and antique cars roaming the town make Galle Fort a hauntingly beautiful escape into the past. Enter through the 'old' Dutch Gate or the 'new' English one.

This is an ideal romantic hideaway for honeymooners or for enjoyment by families with children who can safely explore The Fort. Nearby - a short tuk-tuk ride away - is Unawatuna - voted the prettiest bay in the World with some great restaurants right on the sandy beach and safe swimming and snorkelling. Diving can be organised from here.

Places to eat around Galle: The Lighthouse Hotel is a magnificent structure designed by the late, well-known Geoffrey Bawa and well worth a visit if only for the style and architecture. The hotel and its' beach are within walking distance of the house. In the walls of Galle Fort you can taste the more up-market delights of the Galle Fort Hotel, the old Oriental Hotel now part of the Aman group, or head for the Rampart Hotel with a view over the Fort wall for a great selection of fish, or Sri Lankan curry. Unawatuna and Hikkaduwa both have a number of places to eat. Along Galle road you can also stop at some of the newer spots to have opened in the past couple of years and taste their wares. We include reasonable transport to all of the above in our rental rates!
