Home description

'Malgedara' is a spectacular house, fully enclosed for privacy, yet with 1 acre of lush tropical surroundings for you to experience nature and beauty up close. One side of the garden overlooks a paddy field vista with grazing bullocks and the odd monkey swinging across the swaying coconut palms. The house itself is furnished to the highest standards while retaining its colonial heritage. There are 4-poster teak beds in all rooms, air-con and fans and hot and cold water. All your entertainment needs are taken care of in the small sitting room with TV, DVD and stereo system including Internet access for those workaholics. There are two veranda seating areas one being a huge 15 metre long area at the front of the house, complete with dining for 10 and lazy chairs and sun loungers. The kitchen is huge and fully equipped for all your needs with a separate laundry room with washing machine. The garden is beautiful and will keep all you horticulturists fascinated for hours.

The Southern Coast region

From the 300-year old UNESCO listed Galle Fort to the beaches of Unawatuna to the National Park at Yala, you can experience the diverse landscape that only Sri Lanka offers in such short distances.

The sheer number of places to eat, trendy boutique shops and amazing unique sites to visit, demands attention by the most discerning of travellers. We have listed but a few of the most memorable.

Galle, 116km south of Colombo

The Fort, as it is known, is fast becoming one of the most fascinating places to visit in the world. The enveloping calm that surrounds you upon entering the Fort is a welcome respite from the busy streets outside the perimeter of Galle town. Newly purchased properties are rapidly being renovated in the traditional style with a colonial air about them. Large verandahs look onto narrow streets, fans whir away the warm breezes, shuttered windows keep out the midday sun. The Fort is an experience that is changing each time you visit. My advice would be to get there sooner than later.

Places to eat around Galle

The Lighthouse Hotel is a magnificent structure designed by the late, well-known Geoffrey Bawa and well worth a visit if only for the style and architecture.

In the walls of Galle Fort you can taste the more up-market delights of the Galle Fort Hotel, the old Oriental Hotel now part of the Aman group, or head for the Rampart Hotel with a view over the Fort wall for a great selection of fish, or Sri Lankan curry.

Unawatuna and Hikkaduwa both have a number of places to eat. Along Galle road you can also stop at some of the newer spots to have opened in the past couple of years and taste their wares.

Koggala / Galle area

The villa is located near to Koggala Lake, a beautiful area abundant with birds and perfect for canoe rides around the different islands, the most popular being Bird Island. The village of Kathaluwa is a lovely, friendly village approximately 20 minutes drive (10 km) from the famous 300-year old UNESCO World heritage site of Galle Fort. A number of well-known beaches can be found between Koggala and Galle Fort: Koggala beach (1km), Talpe beach (3km), and of course the better known Unawatuna beach (6km). The great location of the villa makes it handy to stroll to the Lake, nip to the beach in a tuk-tuk or go a bit further to Galle Fort. When taking longer trips to see elephants or visit tea estates, we can help with organising your transport and guide.

Further details indoors:
There are 2 bedrooms inside the main part of the house and 2 guest rooms behind, connected by a small covered courtyard. All bedrooms have large 4-poster teak beds, mosquito nets and lovely Indian cotton bedding. All bedrooms have fans and air-con for your comfort and wooden shutters that can be opened for fresh air and for the beautiful view of tropical flowers and trees. Our Housekeeper will turn down the beds each evening and close the shutters at dusk to ensure a comfortable night's sleep.

Each bedroom is served by a huge bathroom; three en suite and one opposite guest bedroom 1.

The very large kitchen is fully equipped for all your cooking needs. Alternatively, select dishes such as cashew nut curry from our Malgedara menu and sit back while our cook serves up his culinary treats. The cashew nuts come from our own tree in the garden. Another specialty is passion fruit curry and sear fish with rice.

You can choose how you would like to arrange the house; self catering or catered, breakfst only or partially catered. Once a booking enquiry is received we will send a detailed information sheet on what can be provided. We work to satisfy your needs to ensure a relaxing and unforgettable Sri Lankan experience.

As can be seen from our availability calendar, the villa is sought after and our tenants return again and again.
MALGEDARA WAS FEATURED IN THE FAMOUS CHANNEL 4 MAGAZINE "A PLACE IN THE SUN" IN SEP 2007. SEE http://www.channel4.com/4homes/magazine/july_07/expatdiary.html FOR THE FULL INTERVIEW.

Further details outdoors:
The villa is very special and your experience will be equally special. The garden is a tropical oasis with fruit trees and tropical flowers. Enjoy a King Coconut juice from the special tree next to the house. Nilame, our gardener is very adept at climbing the tree using nothing more than rope around his feet. The house offers easy living with a flavour of past days gone by. The staff will attend to your every need, thereby ensuring an amazing holiday that you are sure never to forget. We can also offer 3-wheeler and car services should you require.

Further details

We are delighted to have secured an excellent chef at Malgedara who is available to cook up delicious culinary experiences for our guests on a fully catered or semi-catered basis. Our Malgedara menu has been upgraded to offer superb dishes including Crab, King Prawns and Lobster caught fresh each morning from the shores of the Indian Ocean nearby. Should you wish to order daily from our menu or arrange your holiday fully catered, we are happy to help.

Guestbook for Amazing Colonial Villa

Congratulations on a lovely property, it was a perfect haven for us. Even the monkeys gave us so much joy, especially the kids as we followed them around the garden. Gita was a pleasure to meet, always ready to help with kids and all. She helped as did Roshan, to make our stay a memorable one. You have some very good staff their. The Gardener even though quite shy was so nice to us all. The local people were so friendly, welcoming us wherever we went, somewhat like in India, when we lived their. Even today our little one, Arjuna is still calling out Roshan name.

We all had such a fantastic time at Malgedara. The photos of the villa don't do it justice. It was such a lovely place and the pool was great and absolutely perfect for my 3 year old, who spent at least 3 hours a day in the water. The monkeys also caused amusement each day as they scampered across the roof.
We also want to thank Geeta and Goshan(not sure of the spelling). The food she prepared was fabulous and she also recommended a great restaurant in Unawatuna which was delicious too. She was very accommodating to us all, so please pass on our thanks again.
Also for reference Uda Walawe was a brilliant reserve and we saw loads of Elephants and also lots of birds, Lizards, Eagles. It is a good 3 - 4 hours to get there depending on the traffic but it was great to see Elephants in the wild.Thank again we all truly had a fantastic time.

"We had a fabulous at your two villas in Galle.
Everyone was charming and helpful. The pool and view at Malgedara were just stunning. Kurullaah is a fabulous house and the proximity to the beach meant we whizzed back and forwards in a tuk tuk which the kids loved. I will recommend your villas to any-one who asks."
Clents staying Dec 07/Jan 08

"I just wanted to write you a long overdue note of thanks for the wonderful time we enjoyed at Malgedara, all the staff were very helpful and were particularly kind to our son Arthur. We loved the beautiful garden and pool and you were right about it being a bird watcher’s paradise, each day brought a new visitor to admire and identify.
We are planning another trip to Sri Lanka in the summer after the birth of our new baby, so I will be in touch then to see if you have anywhere free."
Clients staying Nov 2007

"Thank you for giving us such a wonderful place to stay. We are still talking about it! Our family also visited from Colombo and thought it was fantastic. You have made it such a welcoming and comfortable home in the most stunning of surroundings. We can see how much thought and work has gone into making it so simply enchanting and, of course, the pool was a truly welcome bonus."
