Southern Province region

In the Indian Ocean, the island of Sri Lanka enjoys a tropical climate, cooled by ocean winds. It is a country rich in beauty, culture and history and many visitors return time after time.

Southern Sri Lanka boasts some of the most idyllic stretches of coastline in Sri Lanka, offering the ideal holiday destination for families, adventure travellers, or culture-vultures, alike. The region not only has exceptional diving, surfing, windsurfing, and para sailing, but also whale and dolphin watching, turtle farms, bird watching and a rich supply of spas, yoga centres and ayurvedic treatments.

After you enjoyed the sand and warm sea, head inland to explore the hilly landscape, covered in tea plantations and ancient cities.?The island is home to all manner of wildlife - there are numerous species of birds and you may even spot the odd elephant or leopard! "Stepping back in time"

The villa is as described, a throw back to days gone by set in an enormous garden. Madura, the butler, is very helpful and an excellent cook. Only the bedrooms are air conditioned so the living room… More

Thanks for this review and we have rectified the highlighted issues. Room AC machines were replaced and new LCD TV was installed.
Additional fans were fixed for the living area and we had the power cut issues during the last drought season and power cuts were imposed by the government and this is no longer an issue.

"A lovely, relaxing stay"

We had a lovely stay here, travelling with our young baby and a friend. We used two of the bedrooms and both were big, clean, air conditioned and tastefully decorated, with even dimmer switches for the bedside lights. The bathrooms are open-air and really stylish (although the pebbled shower floor is a bit uncomfortable on the feet and the ladies both said they never got quite enough hot water for a full shower). The house itself has bags of history, has a great open space design, beautiful and big gardens, and is, again, very tastefully decorated. There's easily enough room for a big group to stay there very comfortably. One of the few negatives about the house is there is some noise from the neighbouring houses in the evening, and a little from the railway track, but it was really nothing compared to the average noise around a property in any town in Sri Lanka.

We were met with a friendly welcome from Thilina, the property manager, who showed us round and told us about the history of the house - it has belonged to his family for generations. We also had lovely service from Madureh, the "butler". He is available as little or as much as you want him to be.

We ate dinner in the villa each night and the food was delicious. We can especially recommend the pol rotti and the pork curry. We brought some of our own food for breakfast and snacks but from what we experienced it would actually be hard to fully self cater at the villa and perhaps the assumption is that you would not want to anyway.

We liked having Laura, the house dog, around but the owners are very sensitive to the fact that not everyone likes dogs and will make sure she is not in the house if you don't want her to be.

We didn't go to any of the restaurants locally but the villa is about 20 minutes drive from Unawatuna and about half an hour from Galle Fort.

Overall a lovely, relaxing stay and we hope Villa Kathaluwa thrives.
