We had a lovely stay here, travelling with our young baby and a friend. We used two of the bedrooms and both were big, clean, air conditioned and tastefully decorated, with even dimmer switches for the bedside lights. The bathrooms are open-air and really stylish (although the pebbled shower floor is a bit uncomfortable on the feet and the ladies both said they never got quite enough hot water for a full shower). The house itself has bags of history, has a great open space design, beautiful and big gardens, and is, again, very tastefully decorated. There's easily enough room for a big group to stay there very comfortably. One of the few negatives about the house is there is some noise from the neighbouring houses in the evening, and a little from the railway track, but it was really nothing compared to the average noise around a property in any town in Sri Lanka. We were met with a friendly welcome from Thilina, the property manager, who showed us round and told us about the history of the house - it has belonged to his family for generations. We also had lovely service from Madureh, the "butler". He is available as little or as much as you want him to be. We ate dinner in the villa each night and the food was delicious. We can especially recommend the pol rotti and the pork curry. We brought some of our own food for breakfast and snacks but from what we experienced it would actually be hard to fully self cater at the villa and perhaps the assumption is that you would not want to anyway. We liked having Laura, the house dog, around but the owners are very sensitive to the fact that not everyone likes dogs and will make sure she is not in the house if you don't want her to be. We didn't go to any of the restaurants locally but the villa is about 20 minutes drive from Unawatuna and about half an hour from Galle Fort. Overall a lovely, relaxing stay and we hope Villa Kathaluwa thrives. |
