The Retreat
About the home
We fell in love with this property at first sight. Tucked away on the slopes of an alpine meadow overlooking the mountains and the beautiful village of Livek, the chalet is an idyllic, relaxing hideaway. Close to the historic town of Kobarid and just 2km from the Italian border, its the perfect place to get away from it all, or to go out and explore.
We've done our best to make the Retreat as comfortable as possible while still retaining that traditional feel. A king size double bed, with pine walls and shutters on all windows, modern kitchen, comfy sofa and Slovenian wood burning stove downstairs.
Wake up every morning in your own little retreat, step out onto the balcony and soak up the views. Right outside your front door is some of the best and most picturesque hillwalking in the Julian Alps, renowned for the low number of visitors as much as their beauty.
Its difficult to describe in just a few words so we've included a video and lots more photos on our own website.

The Soca valley is famous throughout Slovenia for offering the country's most jaw dropping scenery with truly picture-postcard views.
It is also renowned in kayaking circles for offering some of the best white water sports in Europe. Nearby Bovec (20 minutes) has become a thriving outdoor activities town with almost every imaginable sport available.
In summer take advantage of the beautiful Soca river and in Winter the ski resort of Kanin, which has just doubled in size with the addition of a lift connecting it to the Italian resort on the other side of the mountain.
In the other direction you can drive or cycle the Fifty Bend Road to Kranjska Gora or journey to the mountain village of Trenta to see the source of the Soca river.
The area is steeped in history, many of the First World War trench lines ran through the mountains nearby (one indeed ran right past the cottage) and there is a museum in Kobarid (15 minutes) offering a touching local insight into the period.
An excellent day trip is to travel south to see Slovenia's Karst region with its massive underground caves, vineyards and the world famous Lipizaner stud farm - an absolute must for any equestrian enthusiast and a wonderful day out even if you're not.

The Kobarid / Livek area
This really is a great location for a peaceful getaway - somewhere to recharge. However, you also have the option to explore some of Slovenia's loveliest areas. You are right on the edge of the Triglav National Park and the Soca River. Plus, you are also right on the border with Italy, with its contrasting styles and atmosphere.
It is a walkers paradise, plus there is fishing and water rafting in the Soca and loads of history to explore around Kobarid. What more can we say? Except, come, of course!
Skiers can enjoy the reliable snow at the Kanin ski centre. Now linked to the Italian side, this offers 30km of piste at up to 2300m.

The closest airport is Trieste in Italy, available from the UK with Ryanair. Other options are Klagenfurt in Austria (also Ryanair) or Slovenia's own airport near Ljubljana which is served by Easyjet. Also worth noting: you can get to The Retreat in under 2 hours from Venice Marco Polo airport. Makes a great two centre holiday!
The chalet sits on a mountain slope near the Village of Livek and about 5km from the town of Kobarid and 20km from the regional town of Tolmin in the west of Primorska.
Starting from Tolmin, head towards Kobarid. When you reach the village of Idrsko (just before you reach Kobarid), turn left at the sign for Livek. Follow this winding road up the hill for about 5km to Livek.
In the village, take a left turn off the main road at the point where you see the signs for Italy. Follow this minor road out of the village and up the hill. After a couple of hairpin bends you will see the chalet on your right.

I fell in love with this from the moment I read the advertised description and it did not disappoint when I arrived. It's very much a base for outdoor activities and/or the historic interest . It's located right by the WW1 Austro-Italian front - my main reason for visiting. Nearby is the excellent Kolovrat Open Air Museum with extensive renovated trench systems overlooking the valley. The WW1 museum in Kobarid is also excellent. There are ample opportunities for walking/treking/climbing/cycling/kayaking/horse riding and paragliding. Location of the chalet is idyllic, particularly in May when I visited. A car (or maybe a bike?) is essential. For the more obvious trappings of civilisation ( mini-markets, restaurants and cafes etc ) there are always the nearby towns of Kobarid or Tolmin. The chalet is well equipped and comfortable and all arrangements for arrival went without a hitch. There is even a wood stove ( not needed by me) which I would guess makes everything very snug at cooler times of the year. The owner was helpful and responsive , providing very useful local information to help with the stay. The chalet also had useful maps, books and pamphlets. Highly recommended. |

The only draw back we had was not spending more time at the RETREAT. We initially were drawn to the remoteness of the location for a restful time to enjoy each other in a romantic mountain setting. We got that and much more. The relaxation for our minds, walking and hiking for our bodies and the atmosphere of the mountains for our soul. We will be going back to the RETREAT and if you are looking to escape all that a television brings this could be your destination. A couple looking to escape to the top of the world or a young family looking to get away - Thanks for the stay and all you provided. |
