The Western Cape region
Www.thewesterncape.co.za
THE WESTERN CAPE The Western Cape is popular with both local and overseas tourists. The coastal areas, primarily the Garden Route, which runs along the south coast from Hermanus to the Keurboom River, is a "must see" for visitors. Knysna is located in the middle of the Garden Route.
GARDEN ROUTE Known as the most beautiful garden route in all the world, this area stretches along the southern coast of Africa and includes the towns of Swellendam, Riversdal, Stilbaai, Mosselbay, George, Knysna, Plettenberg Bay and then slightly north of George the quiet town of Oudtshoorn where a large part of the local industry is Ostrich farming.
The Garden Route is decorated with action packed mountain ranges, blue warm waters, green ancient forests and the ambience of the French Riviera.
Ancient Yellowwood trees towering above the thick greenbelt of rain forest and jagged rocky coastlines mark the eastern part of the Garden Route near Knysna and Plettenberg bay.
The beautiful Knysna estuary provides for fishermen, boat cruises, birdwatchers and the like. Arguably the most beautiful stretch of coastline in the world, you will not leave disappointed.
Bungi at Bloukrans, the highest bungee jump in the world at 216 metres or walk the Otter Trail for 5 days along the beautiful forested coastline. No shortage of beautiful beaches either, with Plettenberg Bay, Robberg and Lookout beaches, Keurboomsstrand, Buffels Bay near Knysna, Wilderness, Stilbaai and many more.
Knysna / Thesen Island area
KNYSNA The town of Knysna started in 1804 when sir George Rex arrived in the area. He bought the Melkhoudkraai estate on the shores of the Knysna lagoon and moved his whole family out to the estate where they settled. It was believed that he was the illegitimate son of king George the 3rd.
Knysna's official founding date was 1825. In 1851, Knysna was declared a magistrate, and later on in 1881, it was declared a town.
Today, Knysna is one of the Garden Route's best known travel destinations. Situated between lush forests and the shores of the peaceful estuary it offers many activities and attractions to a wide variety of people.
The Knysna area consists out of Knysna, Sedgefield, Brenton, Noetzie, Rheenendal, Belvidere and Buffalo Bay. The area is one of the most scenic in the world and offers beaches, lakes and lush forests to play in.
After being South Africa’s favourite town of the year for a few years in a row, it has now received international recognition for the gem it is - it was named as one of the Top 100 Destinations in the World and one of the Top 25 in Africa by the Trip Advisor, 2008 Travellers’ Choice Destinations Awards.
With a rich history, gourmet restaurants and a variety of art & craft rambles to add, this is also the ideal base for exploring the rest of the Garden Route.
THESEN ISLAND Thesen Islands is a multi-award winning marina development within the Knysna estuary on the renowned "Garden Route" of South Africa. The marina is spread over 90ha and consists of 19 man-made islands surrounded by 25ha of tidal waterways and linked by 21 arched bridges.
Arnt Leonard Thesen and his family left Stanger in Norway in 1868 in search of a new home. In 1870, they settled in Knysna and soon became an integral part of the burgeoning village, setting up the first trading store and counting house.
They also dealt in timber and, in 1904, Charles Wilhelm Thesen bought Paarden Island which had been part of the Melkhoutkraal Estate of George Rex - the founder of Knysna.
The Thesens began processing timber on the island in 1922 and the island soon became known as Thesen Island. In 2000, the Thesen Islands redevelopment of 19 islands began.
