The Western Cape region
The Garden Route is a superb holiday destination combining magnificent scenery, luxurious accommodation and a wide variety of leisure activities.
The Garden Route of South Africa is a uniquely scenic and natural environment, lightly touched by man’s industrialisation, and treasured for its beauty and diversity. Forests, rivers, mountains and beaches blend easily with traditional farming activities and outdoor activities for visitors. It is energising, tranquil and cherished by those who tread lightly in the presence of Mother Nature.
Knysna, Plettenberg Bay and the surrounding coastal and mountain areas, have become a destination of choice for discerning international travellers.
Activities available include golf on world-class courses, all water sports on both the Knysna lagoon and in the sea, hiking through age-old forests or along deserted beaches, cycling, fishing or just plain old swimming. Beautiful beaches dot the coastline and coves from Mossel Bay to Natures Valley.
You will also enjoy great dining experiences at a wide variety of excellent restaurants. Seafood, wines and fresh produce are abundant and reasonably priced. Whilst locals tend to holiday during the peak holiday periods of Christmas, New Year and Easter, discerning travellers chose the best months from February to May to escape the crowds and enjoy the hot sunny days and balmy evenings. Access to the Garden route is by air to George Airport from Cape Town, Durban or Johannesburg, or by car from all major centres. Regular bus services also operate throughout the year.
Best time to visit:
There is no bad time to visit the Garden Route. Bear in mind, though, that this is a favourite destination over Easter and the December holidays, so there will be more people at those times.
What to pack
Your binoculars, obviously, if you're a birder. Your camera, and perhaps a raincoat (there's no specific rain season here - it happens any time of year). Bring your swimming costume too.
What to eat
Knysna specialises in oysters, and there's an entire festival dedicated to these molluscs in July.
Just as Knysna is the centre of the Garden Route, so to is Thesen Islands at the centre of Knysna. This award-winning marina development, surrounded by the quiet waters of the famous Knysna lagoon, has created a life-style unique in South Africa. Most of the quality architect-designed homes are at the waters edge, fronted by canals that dissect the island.
A community atmosphere, friendly neighbours and beautiful surroundings combine to create a perfect outdoor holiday environment. Supported by the shops and diverse (award-winning) restaurants on the island, there is no need to travel afar.
