WINTER TIME
Akaslompolo is a truelly magical winter wonderland with the polar nights creating a pink/grey twilight to the winter days and add to that the chance of seeing the amazing Northern lights, makes Ylläs a wonderful place. The village is surrounded by the 7 fells of Ylläs, the largest being the Ylläs fell, which is 718m high. The Ylläs fell is where the down hill ski fields are located. There are a total of 69 runs 29 of which are flood lit, there are also 320km of cross country ski and snowmobile tracks winding their way around this magical snow covered village and the surrounding woodland. Add to this all the other winter activities that you can do and you will quickly find that you run out of time and will be thinking of a return visit.
Ylläs is in a unique area of Europe. It is lucky enough to be able to guarantee snow throughout the ski season. This is a major bonus if you are relatively new to the sport, as the worst scenario is getting to your resort and finding green meadows.....not so in Ylläs.....skiing is guaranteed Dec to April each year.
The temperature in the winter months can vary between -5 and -30, which means the air is crisp and clear but not damp. Take a walk out over one of the frozen lakes, or have a go at cross conutry skiing. There is always an exhilarating husky sleigh ride throught the frozen forest, or a more magestic reindeer sleigh ride snuggled under a warm blanket and for the horse people how about going for a trek on an Icelandic pony through the magical winter wonderland of the forest.
SUMMER TIME
In the summer months, after the snow has melted to reveal once again the soft green landscape. You can get away to the peace and solitude, where the reindeer out number the locals. It's a time for walking the hills and enjoying the flora and fauna that were previously asleep under the snow. The 320km of cross country tracks now double up as walking, hiking & cycling tracks. Visit the cystal clear lakes and wander along the rivers and streams. There are plenty of other activies such as fishing, golf, pony trekking or why not pamper yourself with a massage. All this while enjoying the unique experiense of the midnight sun.
FISHING
Looking for somewhere different to go fly fishing, why not try Lapland. Our guide with all his local knowledge will take you to some of the more remote fishing locations on the rivers and lakes, fishing for… midget trout, brown trout grayling and salmon.
The Tornio-Muonio River forms the border between Finland and Sweden and is one of the major rivers in Europe, travelling some 2000 mile through Finland alone. It is also the longest free flowing salmon river in Europe, producing annually an average of half a million salmon smolts. Many fishermen come to fish for the large wild salmon, but the
Muonio is an excellent source of grayling, including many fish of specimen size, with the average size approximately 35cm and about one pound. Large sea trout can be found in the lower river and some of the tributaries, brown trout are also present but fairly rare.
The Äkäs River has very good grayling and sea trout fishing.
CYCLING
There is a 320km network of track winding its way through the forest that surrounds the village of Akäslompolo. In the winter times these tracks are used for cross country skiing, but trust me these tracks are not flat! Or for those with even more leg power how about cycling up to the top of the Ylläs 718 fell, which is as its name indicates is 718 metres high. If you have time to stop for a breather the views are amazing and yes there is a café at the top. With the mid-night sun you can cycle all through the night without the need for lights.
GOLF
The Levi golf course is set in a place of exceptional natural beauty by a lake at the foot of the surrounding fells. The spacious course with its variable terrain offers a challenging environment for golfers of all levels. What is unique about this course is that it allows you to play day and night, even under the midnight sun!
In the summer months it can get up to +30 and the sun doesn't set.

Children in Need 2009
In 2009 Fun with Santa took part in the BBC Radio 2 ‘Auction For Things Money Can’t Buy’. With the kind co-operation from various companies and restaurants in Ylläs Lapland, we organised a trip to Lapland for a family of 4 plus TV presenters Angellica Bell and Michael Underwood. The BBC got behind us and helped by arranging the flights through SAS and the overnight accommodation.
Wednesday 02nd to Monday 7th December
We all met up at the airport and started on our journey to the winter wonderland. We flew to Helsinki and then onto Oulu, where we stayed overnight. After a good night’s sleep and a hearty breakfast we were collected by Kylmämaa Tours and started our 5 hour overland journey to the village of Ylläs. On the journey up the snow got thinker and thicker, there was great excitement at the sighting of the first wild reindeers. The 5 hours passed quickly with many games with the children and laughter.
We arrived at the Saaga Hotel and we greeted by Tiina from Ylläs Travel Association. After lunch, we were collected by Ylläs Adventures and taken to get kitted out in thermal gear. Now we were ready to go searching for Santa, we travelled into the forest by mini bus eventually we came to a small pathway at the side of the road and one of Santa’s helpers was waiting for us. She guided us up a candle and lantern lit pathway right to Santa’s cottage. Inside sat by a roaring fire was Santa in his favourite rocking chair. He talked to the children about the lovely letters he had received from them and their wishes for Christmas, he then gave presents to the children and a special one to Angellica Everyone was then invited to write their Christmas wishes in Santa’s special book and have their photos taken with Santa, all too soon it was time to leave Santa to have his afternoon nap. Santa’s helper then took us to their cottage where we were treated to hot berry juice and gingerbread biscuits. Then it was time for the children little and big to make traditional tree decorations, with plenty of glue and laughing. Thermal suits were put back on and outside we went to play in Santa’s back yard on his skis, kick sled, toboggans, and snow shoes. All too soon it was time for us to head for the cabins.
In the evening we wandered through the woods to the Poro restaurant, where we were met by Tiina from Ylläs Travel Association for our welcome meal. With reindeer tears for the ladies (highly recommended iced alcohol shot) followed salad starter, salmon skewers for main and apple tart for desert. Plenty of chatter and a good evening, was enjoyed by all.
Friday 4th December
After breakfast in the cabins we were collected by Kylmämaa Tours and take to Sami’s reindeer farm, where we were greeted by the family in traditional clothes. After introductions were made we were taking to the reindeer corral where the family were able to feed the reindeer. Once the reindeer could eat no more we retreated to the seats around the open fire to warm up and enjoy Marjut’s home-made sweet bread and berry juice. I bit of training and practice on the lasso and it was time for the family and TV presenters to go off on their reindeer sleigh ride through the forest.
On the way back to the village we stopped at the Wood Jewel, factory and café. We took in a guided tour of the factory, where the eldest child Lizzie was presented with a reindeer necklace that we watched being made. Lunch at the Wood Jewel, a few purchases from the shop and we were on our way again.
Back to the cabin with a couple of hours to relax, well some did. Yours truly and Lizzie took a wander down to the supermarket. Once we got back to the cabin there was chance for a quick change before rounding up the group for a walk down to Pipola’s restaurant for tea. We had warm open sandwiches, with tea and coffee. After which we wandered back to the Snow Fun Safari office to get ready for our Maybe the Northern Lights trip.
This safari took us into the forest at night where we had hoped to catch a glimpse of the Northern Lights. We traveled at quite a slow pace, which gave us chance to see the forest at is most magical. After about 12km we came to the forest Kota where we stopped for a break, our guide Arto topped up the fire that was smoldering in the central grate and started making coffee warming the buns for us. Once we were all settled he told us about the Lapp legends around an open fire. On the way back we watched the night sky to see if the Northern Lights will perform their magic. Alas not for us this time.
Saturday 5th December
After a slightly more leisurely breakfast we were collected by Kylmämaa Tours and taken to Konijanka Animal Farm, where we enjoyed a guided tour around the animals. The girls had a pony ride around the grounds. Then the family all took a horse drawn sleigh ride. Once they were snug under a warm blanket they were taken on a sleigh ride, pulled by traditional Finnish horses with bells ringing through the forest that surround the grounds of the animal park. Back from that and it was time for everyone to go on a husky safari. They were all given instruction on how to drive the husky sleigh. It was then time to take part in the 9km sleigh safari.
Once everyone was back it was time for warm juice and cakes in the café, all apart from Lizzie that is as she had more interesting thing to do driving a snowmobile in a special track in the grounds of the park.
We were joined during our stay at the Konijanka Animal Park by the reporter from the Kuukkeli newspaper. She took photos and interviewed us all for the next addition of the newspaper.
We were collected and taken to the Ylläs Y1 Ski Centre, where first stop was to have our lunch. This was from the buffet for the adults and burgers for the children. Once we were all full it was time to get sorted for the ski lessons. Mum, Dad, Lizzie, Angellica and Michael went off for a fun filled and much laughter skiing lesson, while Darcey and I opted for the much warmer children’s day care centre at the slopes. Once the lesson was over we joined the family to hear their skiing tails over a much needed drink.
Our final evening was put on at the Äkäs Hotel, where we were treated to a wonderful meal and everyone got to sample reindeer steaks. After enjoying our meal we adjourned to Tiina’s place to continue our party sharing gifts and drinks.
Sunday 06th December
All too soon it was time for us to say goodbye and make our journey home.
