The Lapland region

Set on the edge of the Pallas-Yllas national park our property is located in the tranquil and unspoiled village of Akaslompolo. The village itself is built around the southern and western shores of the beautifully clear and clean freshwater lake Akaslompolo.

During the polar winter (December to February) the sun does not rise above the horizon giving the resort a magical feel in a grey light during the daytime. At night walk out onto a frozen lake and experience the breathtaking beauty of the Northern Lights (appearance of the Northern Lights during your stay cannot be guaranteed !!) In the summer (end of May to end of July) you can experience the magic of this land of the midnight sun. At this time of year the sun never sets, where else could you play golf, fish or explore at 2am in the morning?

With winter temperatures typically -10C to -30C Yllas ski resort was just about the only resort in Europe with snow covered and open ski slopes between November and January during the 2006/2007 season. With the slopes closing on 1st May this provides possibly the most reliable and family friendly ski centre in Europe.

We would describe the slopes as being great for beginners and intermediate skiiers with a great nusery slope area and kindergarden. The wide open slopes of well prepared snow are a great playgroung for skiiers and boarders alike. Even during the peak ski season of March and April the slopes are not crowded and during the rest of the season you can ski without another sole in sight. Served mainly by button and T-Bar lifts the Yllas ski resort is undergoing a major upgrade with the first chairlifts already up and running and a gondola lift (the first in Finland) due to open for the 2007/2008 season. Ski passes, lessons and equipment hire is inexpensive and all instructors are really friendly and speak very good English.

Alternative winter sports include cross country skiing and snow shoeing with over 300km of prepared tracks accessable right from the cabin door. A complementary set of snow shoes, a toboggan and kick sled are provided for guests.

But Yllas is not all about skiing and winter sports. The excitement doesn't stop when you come down from the slopes. Enjoy the thrill of racing through the Arctic landscape on a husky or reindeer drawn sled or rent a snowmobile and head off to to explore the hundreds of kilometers of tracks giving you total freedom to roam. Ride an icelandic pony through the frozen forests or even have Santa visit the cabin to see the children.

When the Arctic snows melt by mid May the land transforms into a lush and green haven for all kinds of rare and beautiful wildlife, flora and fauna. The crystal clear lakes and rivers offer some of the best fishing in the world and an opportunity for all the family to enjoy a truely unique adventure holiday. With kayaking, canoeing, white water rafting, fishing, mountain biking, walking and much more to do Lapland is a fantastic and as yet uncrowded holiday destination for families who want to avoid the crowds of a beach holiday.

Summer temperatures are typically 22C to 30C making a family activity or fly drive holiday a pleasant experience away from the stress of work and home.

Within driving distance is the Lappish area of Sweden, home of the famous Ice Hotel in winter and habitat of wolves, wolverines and bear, not to mention many rare and beautiful birds.

Cost of LIving: Finnish Lapland should not be confused with Scandanavian city destinations. Food and alcohol prices are comparable with the UK and tobacco products are cheaper. January 2007 fuel prices were 66p/litre (99cents/Litre) at the service station in Akaslompolo.

Guestbook

Mr N (Early Dec 2007) The cabin was amazing, much better than the pictures portray on the website. The sauna is highly understated as well on the website and really was a pleasure to come home to every day

Mr J (Mid Dec 2007) Thank you for a wonderful holiday, which without your help and guidance never would have happened. It was a cherished experience that will stay with my family and I forever.

Mrs D (Mid Dec 2007) We had a great time in Lapland, and would not hesitate in recommending the log cabin we stayed in to friends and family. Kate was a great contact to have and her help and advice were very welcome. We did so many different activities that we enjoyed as a family - sledging, husky rides, reindeer sleigh, skidoos, and of course Santa Claus. Thank you so much for giving us and especially our 4 year old daughter a wonderful winter holiday. It was great - a big thumbs up!!

Mrs S (Christmas 2007) Truely amazing place, cabin was home from home but better, very warm, clean ideal for place to spend a white Christmas. Snow mobiles a must, Want to go back and ski next time. Highly recommend Bespoke to organise a trip of a life time! The train journey was an experience and would recommend it

Mr C (Jan 2008) I just wanted to let you know that we had a fantastic time in Lapland. The cabin was perfect and Michele and I thoroughly enjoyed our week there. Many thanks to you and your team
