Home description

A Grade II listed property retaining its original 18th century period features and oozing with character, Cruck Cottage offers a peaceful and homely atmosphere on the southern edge of the North Yorkshire Moors National Park. Located in a sleepy residential village just a few steps away from the trout-filled River Dove and overlooking a thunderous weir, Cruck Cottage is a popular self-catering cottage with many famous local attractions only a short drive, walk or cycle ride away.

With one double and one twin bedroom plus a bathroom on the first floor and another double bedroom and en-suite shower/WC on the ground floor, families or two/three couples are comfortably accommodated. The ground floor offers a hall/dining room and double living room/lounge with open fires at either end. A cottage-style kitchen with stable door opens on to a riverside lawn. Winter nights are warmed with roaring log fires.

A largely lawned private garden surrounds the cottage providing plenty of safe space for kids or pets. A small summer house enjoys fine views of a field and the nearby weir of the River Dove. A meandering stream runs along the entire length of the garden and flows to a nearby watermill. A lawn/patio at the rear of the cottage offers a perfect spot for evening barbecues.

The Northern England / Yorkshire / Yorkshire region

As the largest county in England, North Yorkshire has an unrivalled diversity of scenery from the awe-inspiring highlands of the Yorkshire Dales, to the forests and desolate wilderness of the North York Moors, to the pirate’s coves, beaches and cliffs of the dramatic North Sea Coast. This is a county for lovers of the great outdoors with excellent opportunities for walking, cycling, fishing and horse-riding across the region, with plenty of cultural attractions to discover as you go.

Ryedale is deservedly one of the counties most popular regions for visitors, offering easy access to the North York Moors National Park, rolling farmlands, quaint ‘chocolate-box’ villages, colourful local markets, famous abbeys, castles, stately homes, steam trains, theme parks and some exceptional museums. Also, many fine old country pubs and inns serve tasty home-made puddings, classic Sunday roasts, fish and chips and a remarkable range of real ales.

Kirkbymoorside / Kirkby Mills area

Cruck Cottage is located only a few minutes walk from the traditional market town of Kirkbymoorside. With a population of some 3,000 people, the town has a good range of shops and amenities including five pubs, a choice of restaurants, cafés, fish and chip shops, bakeries, a newsagent, pharmacy, supermarkets, a squash club, tennis courts, children’s park, sports field and golf course. To the east is Pickering, which offers a swimming pool, cinema, trout fishery, a castle, antique shops and is the home of the famous North Yorkshire Moors Railway – a ‘must-do’ journey through breathtaking Yorkshire scenery on a steam train.

To the west is Helmsley, overlooked by a castle and with a classic medieval market square. For the kids, one of the UK’s premier theme parks - Flamingo Land - is only 16 km away, whilst the golden sand beaches and amusements of Scarborough are within 45 minutes drive. Also within a short drive are Castle Howard, Byland and Rievaulx Abbeys, Robin Hood’s Bay, Whitby and Lightwater Valley. Last but not least is one of England’s finest National Parks, the North York Moors….roaming sheep, wild heather, picture-postcard villages and great countryside for walking, exploring or just leisurely touring. Simply breathtaking!

Easily accessible by car, Cruck Cottage is located on the north side of the A170 Thirsk to Scarborough road, just 1 km east of the picturesque market town of Kirkbymoorside, in the village of Kirkby Mills/Keldholme.

Heading northbound on the A1(M) or M1, leave the motorway at Junction 45 on to the A64 heading towards York. Several very scenic routes lead from the A64 to Kirkbymoorside via either Castle Howard (recommended), Malton or Pickering (each take approx. 1 hour from the M1).

If travelling from mainland Europe by car, take the Zeebrugge to Hull ferry. A wide choice of low-cost flights serve Leeds/Bradford airport, with Manchester airport only a couple of hours by train to the Ryedale area and nearest station at Malton.

Further details indoors:
On opening the front door into the cottage, charm and authenticity are instantly evident, as is the original 'cruck' beam. A spacious hallway opens through to a delightful lounge/living area which is traditionally furnished and comes complete with two fireplaces. A well-equipped kitchen is at the rear of the cottage.

An original ‘salt cupboard’ is set deep into the thick Yorkshire stone wall, whilst a wood-panelled staircase leads up to the first floor landing. Upstairs, two bedrooms (one twin, one double), each with an exposed ‘truss’ beam, provide a peaceful place to sleep.

On the first floor a beamed bathroom is fitted with a panelled bath complete with washbasin and WC, whllst an en-suite on the ground floor has a shower, washbasin and WC. Both heating and hot water are powered by an oil-fed boiler and a real log fire adds oodles of atmosphere.

Further details outdoors:
Cruck Cottage has a private lawned garden with fruit trees and summer house. The garden offers a safe spot for kids to play and dogs to run. Stable doors open out from the kitchen to a feature pond, which adjoins the lawn and Mill Race - a bubbling stream which flows from the River Dove and its cascading weir - both only a 100 metres or so from the cottage.

The lawn is a perfect spot for early evening BBQ's overlooking the weir and stream. With a sun downer in one hand, grab your binoculars in the other and search for kingfishers, ducks, moorhen and the resident farm chickens across the stream! Off-road parking is available at the front of the cottage.
