Birdwatching can be enjoyed at Sunbiggin Tarn and Platform 3 Children's Activity Centre is within driving distance.

The nearby village of Ravenstonedale (2 miles away), once described by Wainwright as one of Westmorland's loveliest villages, boasts three pubs, all serving fine ales and modern cuisine. They include the Black Swan which has received national awards in each of the last three years.

Kirkby Stephen (6 miles away) is a historic market town with the usual facilities including a small supermarket and various restaurants and takeaways.

The house itself is very large with lots of room for everyone to do their own thing and the bedroom layouts are very flexible (see below). The owners live on site in an annexe at the rear of the property with separate access, garage etc. Brownber is ideal for families and friends to get together but also get away.

The Cumbria/Lake District

Mostly rural, Cumbria is one of the most beautiful regions of the UK and includes the whole of the Lake District, the Eden Valley (where our Cottage lies), the North Pennines and part of the Yorkshire Dales. There are many events and festivals in Cumbria, from the traditional agricultural shows (ours at Ravenstonedale being in August) to more recent ones such as local music festivals. A particularly close festival to us is the Appleby horse fair in June.

The Lake District, Pennines and the Yorkshire Dales are all within easy reach and can be viewed from the Coast to Coast route within ½ mile of the house itself.

Activities:

You can walk, cycle or run out onto the open fells from the doorstep.

Described by Wainwright as "often likened to a huddle of squatting elephants" the Howgill Fells are more undulating than the Lake District mountains but also less crowded. They therefore offer walkers brilliant walking opportunities with the possibility of isolation. There are approximately 40 summits of which several are over 2,000 feet.

The Lake District is easy enough to get to from Brownber by car. Even if you are not a walker, scenic circular drives taking in Kendal in the south to Keswick in the north make a great day out amid stunning scenery.

Orton (5 miles away) holds farmers’ markets every second Saturday of every month and has a rather popular choclate shop and factory.

Facilities:

Ravenstonedale is a picturesque village 1 1/2 miles away, where there are some excellent pubs serving food including The Black Swan Hotel, The Kings Head Hotel and The Fat Lamb. There is a new cyclepath from our village to Ravenstonedale for those who wish to cycle or walk to these.

There are restaurants, shops, a supermarket and banks in Kirkby Stephen (5 miles away). The railway station at Kirkby Stephen is on the famous Settle to Carlisle line. You can also take trips through The Dales on classic coaches from here.

Kendal is about 17 miles away and has a wide variety of shops, restaurants, supermarkets, a cinema, and a theatre. Sedbergh is only a short, scenic 10 mile drive away, alongside the Howgill Fells and is an attractive town famous for its secondhand book shops.

"This is an excellent place to stay."

The hostesses were very welcoming. They made us feel very much at home and the cake with a cup of tea when we arrived was a lovely touch. The fires in the lounge and dining room added to the wonderful warm atmosphere Fantastic scenery and wonderful walking country. The property is spacious and well equipped and the owners will endeavour to find any piece of kitchen equipment should you ask. Lots of room for everyone to be able to find a quiet corner should they wish and for children to explore the house and grounds and work off any excess energy. The utility room is very spacious and very thoughtfully equipped to dry off walking clothes and boots.

"Good house, Good walks, Great stay"

A group of five friends rented the house as a base for a 3 night walking stay. We had a great time. The house was very well stocked and even gave us ample space for drying boots and jackets - it didn't rain much but was wet under foot. We lit log fires when we returned each day and enjoyed the games or watched tv. Brownber has masses of books and maps so don't worry about taking any.
we did two 8 mile walks which gave lovely views even at low level. We even got to a stone circle.

There are several places to eat well quite close to Brownber House but everything that is required for self catering can be found in the well equipped house.

"A real rural retreat!!!"

We stayed here for a week, there were 2 families, 4 adults and 5 children (all under the age of 6).

The property is very easy to find, and is down a private road, which means there is very little to no traffic. On our journey there we got stuck in a traffic jam on teh a66 and were all very tired, but were cheered up when there was a plate of homemade cakes and tea/coffee,milk etc to greet us.

The location of the property is perfect, the views from every window are amazing, and the only noise you here are the sheep!! The cottage itself is very deceiving, the photos online do not give a true picture. The space on offer is enormous with 5 bedrooms. The high ceilings and brilliant lay out meant we didn't feel on top OF each other. The house has everything you need, including 2 ensuites and a lovely wood burning stove in the living room.

There is a large back garden, that is quite slopped , but the children and the men enjoyed going down on there sledges. The walks around the property are brilliant, you really can let the kids and dogs run wild!

It is about 15 mile out of Kendal and Windermere was about 40minutes there is also a soft play area a few minutes away which was great if the weather wasn't playing ball.

I would recommend ordering your food shopping online as they do deliver to the cottage and it frees up your time to enjoy the holiday.

I would definitely return to this property in the future and really hope I do so !!
