The Cumbria region

There is more to Cumbria than its world-famous natural environment. There are many towns and villages to explore, whether nestled in valleys, on the side of a lake or along the coastline.

From the cosmopolitan city of Carlisle, gateway to Hadrian's Wall Country, and Keswick in the north to the charming market towns of Ulverston and Kirkby Lonsdale and the maritime town of Barrow-in-Furness in the south; from the historical market town of Cockermouth and the harbour town of Whitehaven along the west coast to the pretty towns of Penrith and Appleby in the Eden Valley to the east. And in the central Lakes you will find the ever-popular Kendal, Windermere, Ambleside and Grasmere. Each place has its own story to tell and a character to discover.

Kirkby Lonsdale

The picturesque market town of Kirkby Lonsdale on the banks of the River Lune is ideally located on the edge of the Yorkshire Dales and within easy reach of the Lake District; its attractive setting epitomised by the glorious view up the Lune Valley from Ruskin's View.

The centre is a pleasing mix of elegant 18th-century buildings and stone cottages huddled around cobbled courtyards and narrow alleyways with evocative names such as Salt Pie Lane and Jingling Lane. Traditional butchers, bakers and ‘the best independent cheese shop in the UK' (2007) jostle alongside designer jewellery, fashion and home décor outlets. Nearby, St Mary's Church presides over the ‘Rainbow Parish' - an ecclesiastical area that includes ‘daughter' churches at Barbon, Casterton, Hutton Roof, Lupton, Mansergh, Middleton and Preston Patrick.

Surrounding the town is a rolling landscape of winding lanes and verdant green fields bordered by high hedges and dry stone walls. The broad valley of the Lune contains Casterton, ‘the settlement by a Roman fort', dominated by a prestigious public school. To the north is Barbon, a cluster of houses next to a tumbling beck and the venue for car and motorcycle hill climbs. Further up the Lune Valley is Middleton, a scattered community with an ancient hall in its midst. To the west is rolling farmland around Lupton, Mansergh and Old Town leading up to the prominent limestone outcrops of Hutton Roof.

"Lovely accommodation, beautifully furnished and well equipped"

Stayed here with family for one week in August 2012. The cottage is charming. The renovations have been tastefully and sensitively thought through. The kitchen is very well equipped and I could think of nothing that had been forgotten.

Kirkby Lonsdale is a lovely little town and everything was within walking distance. There were some nice eating establishments and a little supermarket round the corner for odds and ends.

Thank you Sam - you've thought of everything.

"Amazing!"

We had an amazing week away, the house was beautiful and had everything we could have needed! The location was excellent and we managed to visit lots of the beautiful places suggested to us in the guide left for us. Kirkby itself is stunning, lots of lovely shops and restaurants. My partner and I really enjoyed our week away for our birthday. Young and old would enjoy this, I really recommend it!
