About the home

The Bear's Den is a large barn attached to an elegant 400 year old farmhouse built in traditional Carinthian style. The interiors are luxurious with huge sumptuous sofas. This is a magical winter wonderland during ski season (10 mins drive to International resort Nassfeld www.nassfeld.at) or the perfect outdoor sporting playground in summer, with mountain bike and hiking trails, horse riding, rafting and golf on the doorstep. We enjoy proper sunny summers (25-28 degrees) with Italian climate (just 4 km to border), and frosty white Winters.
The property boasts a beautiful garden with outstanding views of the mountains. Accommodation can be on a self-catering basis, or with just breakfast or fully catered if required.

Strictly no smoking as this is an old wooden building.
The Den is opposite a working farm so Townies beware of cow-pats, flies, milking machines, farm dogs.
Refundable breakages deposit (Credit card number: authorisation £500) is required on arrival.
30% of rental fee due on booking, balance required 4 weeks before arrival.
Property not ideal for toddlers as the Mezzanine bedroom is up some quite steep stairs. Cot available for babies.

The Austrian Alps / Salzburgerland / Carinthia region

Year-round paradise for nature and sport lovers.

Winter: downhill ski-ing in the international resort of Nassfeld, cross-country skiing from the door, ice-skating on the outdoor village rink (ice-hockey) or on nearby natural lakes Preseggersee (10 mins) or Weissensee (40 mins).

Summer: marked hiking and mountain biking trails, white-water rafting, horse-riding, summer luge and flying fox with climbing/ rope activities in Nassfeld (8 mins). Swimming in natural lakes. Climbing and paragliding.
40 minutes from Italian border, 2 hours to Venice. 2.5 hours from Salzburg. Shopping in Villach (40 mins).

The Kirchbach area

Traditional Austrian farming community where fields are still ploughed by horses, where wild flowers still grow in the meadows, where church and cow bells still ring louder than the traffic! Lots of village festivals and cultural events throughout the year. Drop into the tiny tourist office in Kirchbach (mornings only) for info and bookings. In Kirchbach, you will also find a post-office, excellent supermarket for all your needs, a cafe, a hairdressers and a pizzeria with great outdoor public swimming pool. For kids, visit the Erlebnis adventure playground on the shores of Pressegersee Lake.

Fly to Klagenfurt with Ryanair from London Stansted, then hire a car. One hour easy drive to the house on A2 motorway to Villach, then continue towards Italy. Turn off towards Hermagor/Nassfeld onto B111. Turn left off B111 in village of Tressdorf. Cross the valley, over the river bridge, then park just after the tight bend on left. Alternatively, fly to Salzburg (3.5 hours), Ljubljana (1.40hrs) or Venice (3hrs) or Vienna (4hrs).
