Killean Estate is a beautiful Scottish country estate and farm situated midway down the west coast of the Kintyre Peninsula.
With a dramatic landscape encompassing beaches, woodland, lochs and gardens, there truly is a wealth of things to see and do. Whether it’s a stroll through the woodland gardens watching the pheasants darting around the undergrowth, a hike up Killean Hill and perhaps a glimpse of the wild Sika Deer, or simply taking advantage of a relaxing afternoon in the Victorian Walled Garden, there is something for everyone.
For golf enthusiasts, nearby Machrihanish Golf Course will certainly impress, with its first hole voted by Golfers Digest as one of the best in the World! Join us on the Kintyre Trail, journey from Tarbert through Campbeltown on the way to the Mull Of Kintyre and find out what captivated and inspired Sir Paul McCartney to wrote one of the world's best selling hit songs, 'Mull of Kintyre'.
Kintyre is on the extreme west coast of Scotland, joined to the mainland by a narrow isthmus at Tarbert and has all the characteristics of island living without the inconvenience and expense of essential ferry crossings, although Kintyre is accessible by both road and ferries from Arran and further north at Tarbert.
The Kintyre Peninsula is about forty miles long and contains fantastic family days out, plenty of things to do and see and Scottish attractions making Kintyre an attractive family holiday destination. On your journey to and around Kintyre you will find the stunning hills & lochs, sandy beaches and stunning sunsets, history and archaeology, and of course seafood which have made this part of Scotland famous. Additionally there are small extras that make Kintyre almost unique; the palm trees in Campbeltown shows the effect of the Gulf Stream, low rainfall (less than 40% of the rest of the west of Scotland), rare golden eagle nesting sites (the most expensive eagles in the world), the absence of traffic jams (our one traffic warden is the last example of an endangered species), two world class golf courses on the shores of the Atlantic Ocean featuring the 'best first hole in the world', and a great established Scottish walk that has to be attempted. Kintyre's a land which is the very cradle of Celtic Scotland, and much more bedsides.
There's plenty to see and do in the area. A boat trip to Gigha is highly recommended where we suggest you hire the bicycles from the beach-shack, tour the Achamore Gardens and take lunch at the boathouse overlooking the bay. A 25-minute drive north from Killean Estate will take you to Tarbert harbour, home of some of Scotlands finest restaurants, and if you continue another 15-minutes onto Skipness, you'll discover a castle, fabulous bay and our previous guest's top-rated destination for seafood. A short trip south from Killean will uncover horse-riding and a historic house at Glenbarr, a couple of superb surfing beaches at Westport and Machrihanish, the Mull of Kintyre and the harbour town of Campbeltown which has plenty to do - whiskey tours, museums, leisure swimming pool, pubs and the opportunity of boat trips such as whale watching. If golf is your bag, there's plenty of choice - there are five course nearby including Owd Tom's famous Machrihanish Links! But why not take a quick tour around the Kintyre Trail and find out for yourself?

By Road
(Glasgow to Killean by road is 116 miles, and will take approx 2.5 hrs). Travelling by car from the South you will
take the M6 northbound to the Scottish Border, followed by the M74 into Glasgow. Follow the signs for the M8 westbound (towards the airport) that will take you through Glasgow Centre. From the M8 fork left onto the M898 which takes you over the Erskine Bridge. At the end of the Erskine Bridge turn a sharp left onto the A82 (towards Crainlarich and Loch Lomond). Stay on this until you reach Tarbet where you will then fork left onto the A83 (towards Campbeltown). This road will take you all the way to Killean, travelling over the ‘Rest And Be Thankful’ mountains, around the top of the Loch heads of Loch Long, Loch Fyne and finally Loch Gilp and passing through the towns of Inveraray, Lochgilphead and Tarbert and finally the small ferry port of Tayinloan. 1.2 miles after you have passed through Tayinloan, you will see the Dolls Cottages on the left hand side of the road, which are the first of the Killean Estate Properties. An excellent way to travel to Killean, is to drive there, whereupon you will experience driving through the fantastic highland landscape, and then return by ferry, thereby sampling the delights that the coastline has to offer. This will work out a slightly more expensive option, but is well worth it!
Ferry (Glasgow to Killean by ferry will take approx the same time as by road)
From the mainland (ie Glasgow), the favoured option is to sail with Caledonian MacBrayen (Calmac) from Gourock to Dunoon and then from Portavadie to Tarbert. There are ferries every hour during the day however it is best to book in advance as they can often get very busy. Once in Tarbert, Killean is 20 miles south, along the A83 coastal road. Another option by ferry is to sail from Ardrossan, which is just south of Glasgow, to Brodick on the Isle of Arran. Once you have crossed over the Island, you will then sail from Lochranza to Claonaig on the east coast of the Mull of Kintyre. This is an ideal route to take should you wish to see Arran. Bus
Bus services between Tarbert and Kennacraig, Campbeltown, Gourock, Glasgow and Oban are operated by Scottish Citylink Coaches (Tel: 08705 505050). Bus services between Portavadie and Dunoon, Tarbert, Kennacraig and Claonaig are operated by Argyll & Bute Council (Tel: 01546 604360). Bus services on Arran are operated by Traveline (Tel: 0870 608 2 608).
Train
Local train services are operated by First ScotRail (Tel: 08457 484950). We recommend that if travelling to Killean by train, you disembark at Glasgow and take the 926 Citylink Coach Service (Campbeltown service), which travels immediately in front of the properties of Killean Estate. However, if you do prefer to travel as far as possible by train, the nearest stations to Killean are Gourock (then take the ferry/buses) or Tarbet & Arrochar or Loch Awe (then take the bus).
Air
There are twice daily return flights operated by British Airways (weekdays only), between Glasgow International and Campbeltown Airport (Machrihanish) - 16 miles away. Machrihanish Airport has one of the longest runways in the UK and can land almost any type of private aircraft. You can also take a seaplane from Glasgow, which can land into Tarbert harbour (www.lochlomondseaplanes.com).
