The Highlands region
Argyll is very popular with walkers and there are plenty of 'Munro's' (Scottish mountains over 3,000 feet) for hill walkers to conquer. As this area situated on the West Coast of Scotland and is therefore in the path of the Gulf Stream, it means that it is usually warmer here than other parts of Scotland. However being in the west means that the area gets more unpredictable weather than on the East Coast. You never know what it is going to be like hour to hour let alone day to day!
On the whole the more settled weather seems to occur in April and May and then later in the year in September and October. If you are coming on holiday to the area it is always advisable to bring clothing for every eventuality. The rain does mean that the countryside is always green and fresh in the summer and remember there is plenty to do in the area whatever the weather!
Kinlochleven area
Kinlochleven lies at the head of Loch Leven, a sea loch which has a scenic drive around either of the roads leading to the village. Nestled below towering mountains of Glencoe and Nevis ranges.
Kinlochleven was once a tiny hamlet with a scattering of cottages. In 1907 an aluminium smelter was built and a new village was born. Surrounded by mountains and with an abundance of fresh water, Kinlochleven was an ideal location for a hydro-powered factory. Aluminium production stopped in 2000, but hydro generating continues.
New industries and tourism activities bring Kinlochleven many visitors throughout the year. The Atlas Brewery produces a fine range of cask conditioned beers from the old Carbon factory and tours can be arranged. Their beers are available in the village and in most good pubs in the area. Next door the the brewery is a new ice climbing wall. The Ice Factor provides an interesting experience for the casual visitor and specifically active rock or ice climbers.
