The Scottish Highlands region
From the lush green farmlands of the Borders to the rugged landscapes of the Highlands, the Scots are proud of their land and identity. The beautiful countryside of Dumfries and Galloway is littered with fortresses and strongholds, testimony to its dramatic history. Moving north, the Highlands are to Scotland what the Pyrenees are to France, with equally breathtaking scenery and fantastic opportunities for walking and mountaineering. Aviemore and the Cairngorms National Park are particularly famous for skiing, whilst Ben Nevis, the highest mountain in Britain at 1343m, is a firm favourite for those seeking a challenge.
For the less energetic, the Whisky Trail provides a unique way of exploring many of Scotland’s attractions and for quieter moments, there’s always Loch Ness and a chance to spot the elusive monster! Scotland also has some of Britain’s best and cleanest beaches. Cromarty is famous for its bottle-nosed dolphins and Nairn, whilst claiming to be one of the sunniest and driest places in the country, has glorious stretches of clean sand over which to roam. Several islands lie off the Scottish coast, each with their own character and heritage, however the Isle of Skye is probably the best known and most visited. As the largest of the Inner Hebrides, Skye’s turbulent geological past has bequeathed it a stunning coastline.
Experienced walkers are drawn to the Black Cuillin Mountains, whilst those less experienced have an array of lower level coastal walks from which to choose or alternatively, visitors can take some time to visit Skye’s capital, the charming harbour town of Portree.
The Kingussie area
Situated in the glorious Cairngorms National Park, Kingussie attracts visitors all year round. The town has a fine selection of hotels and restaurants, as well as being home to one of Scotland's finest folk museums with its collection of buildings and artefacts combining to give a fascinating insight into Highland life. During the summer months demonstrations of traditional crafts take place most days in the 'streets' of the village-like grounds. Just 15 miles south of Aviemore it is also a popular winter destination for skiers along with the Lecht, with skiing and snowboarding for all abilities.

Loads of walking straight from the cottage,so long as you can manage the hills, but the views are worth the effort. Lovely village with all amenities you could need. For the less active the drives... more |

Guestbook for 1297 - Glendarroch Cottage
Everything was on your door step, peace and quiet, walking, local shops and a lovely garden.
Mr & Mrs Jackson, Leeds, West Yorkshire
June 2011
,We liked that the cottage is in a quiet location and has an abundance of wildlife in the garden (birds, red squirrel and rabbits). The many varied walks from the doorstep (through the forest, in the mountains, by the river) meant that we didn't have to drive all the time. These things contributed to us having a very relaxing holiday. The cottage itself was immaculate and dog friendly. We will return in future.

,Good base to see so much. Peaceful. Lots of tourist info and walks and maps at property. Local butcher - excellent. Good local grocery shops

,The garden is a haven for wildlife, easily observed through the large windows or just sitting outside.
