The Devon region
The jewel in Devon's crown, the South Hams of Devon is a scenic region to explore. An area of 'Outstanding Natural Beauty' that encompasses picturesque estuaries and a stunning coastline with miles of unspoilt beaches and hidden coves to a lush hinterland that extends to the wild untamed heathland of Dartmoor, there is variety for all. From the richly wooded Dart Valley and the historic deepwater port of Dartmouth all the way to Bigbury Bay and Burgh Island, you can discover the charm of charismatic coastal villages and towns.
Kingswear overlooks the River Dart and the historic maritime town of Dartmouth. The village itself is quiet and relaxing and benefits from the afternoon and evening sunshine. There is a car and passenger ferry that runs until late for trips across the river to enjoy the shops and variety of restaurants that you will find in the town. Take a ferry trip up the river or day trips with the stream railway up towards Paignton.
For children Woodlands adventure park is just outside Dartmouth and less than 30 mins drive. Also there is a waterpark at Goodrington Sands just along the Torbay coast less than 30 mins drive.
You have a great selection of beaches. Blackpool Sands is roughly 3 miles on the Dartmouth side. The beach has been awarded Blue Flag status for its cleanliness and purity of water. There is a great beach shop and you can hire all types of water sport equipement from here. Eat at the Venus cafe for local delights.
There is also a fine selection of beaches along the Torbay coastline again within a half hour drive. Goodrington and Broadsands are your nearest good beaches, perfect for families.
