The glorious beach at Beesands

  • Nearest beach 0 km
  • Great for children of all ages

A delightful, cosy Fisherman's cottage in a perfect location, right on the beach overlooking Start Bay in the village of Beesands. It has been modernised to a high standard, but retains bags of charm including an open fireplace. You can park for free right in front of the cottage.

Close to Kingsbridge and Salcombe in South Devon, Beesands has all the ingredients for the perfect beach holiday. There is a mile long shingle beach with fields and a freshwater lake, Widdecombe Ley, just behind it. Day fishing boats still operate from the beach and fantastic local seafood can be purchased at the Britannia Fish cafe. You can have perfectly fresh fish and chips on the premises or buy Start Bay lobster, hand-dived scallops or other local fish to cook at the cottage. Just three doors from the cottage is the Cricket Inn. This gastro-pub offers an excellent range of high quality food or you can just drop in for a drink.

Beesands beach has picked up a Blue Flag award for its which means its reached high standards of cleanliness and safety and also merits an entry in the Good Beach Guide from the Marine Conservation Society. Beesands is a great spot for water based activities such as windsurfing, canoeing, sailing and surfing or body boarding.

One of the most stunning sections of the Devon coast path can be reached directly from Beesands. You can walk past the remnants of the lost village of Hallsands, swept away by huge storms in 1903 and 1917 to reach Start Point lighthouse and some stunning hidden sandy coves. Other great sandy beaches such as Lannacombe, Gara Rock and East Portlemouth can be reached in a few minutes by car or rather longer on foot. The Pigs Nose pub at East Prawle is about 4 miles away and a definite 'must visit' while you're in the area.

Inside

There is a very comfortable sitting room with an open fire for the winter plus an electric stove that fits in front of it for chilly summer evenings. There is a fold out dining table with room for 4 people.

Just behind the sitting room is the bathroom and the kitchen which looks out onto the sunny rear garden. The kitchen has an electric hob and oven, microwave, fridge with freezer compartment and a washing machine.

Stairs lead up to the two upstairs bedrooms. The double room, with wash basin, has sea views. The single room has a fold-out bed that allows 4 people to be accommodated (though 4 adults is a bit of a squash).

Outside

Sit in front of the cottage and watch the world go by, take a few steps across the road to the beach or make use of the very sunny, sheltered and well-tended lawn just behind the cottage. The road ends just after the cottage so there is no through traffic.

Facilities and services

There is a flat-screen television with sky satellite channels. Free parking is available just outside the cottage. Economy 7 heating is included. You need to bring a few pound coins for the electric meter for the lights and TV. Free Wifi is available in The Cricket pub one minutes walk away.
