Home description

Auton Cottage is located in a small village, Aveton Gifford, at the head of the Avon Estuary. The West Country / Devon region
Devon and Cornwall are the two most westerly counties in England. The South Hams is in the southern most part of Devon. The area therefore enjoys one of the mildest climates in Britain, being protected by the Dartmoor National Park to the north and caressed by the warm waters of the gulf stream along its spectacular coastline. An area of naturally beautiful coast, countryside, moorland and award winning beaches - the South Hams has been designated an Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty. This is typified by rolling hills, wooded river valleys, patchwork fields, picturesque villages and sandy beaches. There are ample opportunities to walk, sail, surf or fish, as virtually every sport and outdoor activity is well catered for.
Kingsbridge area
There are a wide variety activities, attractions and sports in the area: Beaches - particularly recommended are the surf beaches of Bantham and Bigbury. Also recommended are the award winning Blackpool Sands and the miles of fine pebbles at Slapton sands. On the other side of Salcombe by ferry are the beautiful South Sands which along with Bigbury and Blackpool has an excellent organic Venus Cafe at which to lunch or grab a coffee. From sandy surf beaches to rock pools and coves, there are beaches for all tastes and pursuits. Adventure Parks - one of the largest in the South West, Woodlands Adventure Park, is 20 minutes drive away Boat Hire - can be organised in either Salcombe or Dartmouth Boat Trips and Ferries - run regularly from Dartmouth, Kingsbridge and Salcombe Cinema - a restored local cinema (the Reel) is running in Kingsbridge Fishing - a number of coarse fisheries, game fishing for sea trout and salmon on the River Avon or sea fishing for bass from local beaches/boats. Also short Mackerel trips run out of Salcombe and for the more adventurous, deep sea trips. Gardens, Abbeys, Castles and Houses - abound, but most notably are the Gardens at Soultram House, the Abbey at Buckfastleigh and Castles at Totnes and Dartmouth. Golf - there are several local courses; of special note is the links course at Bigbury, with spectacular cliff views from the course over the Avon Estuary towards Burgh Island Nature reserves - Dartmoor national park is only 30 minutes away and caters for horse riding, canoeing and other outdoor pursuits Steam railways - at Buckfastleigh along the River Dart and at Kingswear up the Dart Estuary to Paignton Walks - there are numerous country, woodland and spectacular coastal walks along the cliff tops
There is also a rich and ancient heritage, South Hams market and coastal towns will repay a visit. The towns of Totnes, Dartmouth, Salcombe and Kingsbridge all have a unique character and are well worth exploring. Of particular note are the two towns nearest Auton Cottage; Salcombe can be reached by passenger ferry from East Portlemouth. The town is perched on the cliffs facing Bolt Head and is a world renowned centre for sailing and watersports. Kingsbridge at the top of the estuary is a vibrant market town, with a good variety of local shops, pubs and restaurants.
