in Kingston, two marvellously pretty, 18th cent. or earlier, semi-detached cottages with communal terrace, but each with own entrance and own small, enclosed, private garden. Both are south-facing, partly slate-hung, and 200 yards from the good pub. Both gardens are delightful, unusual, with many interesting plants and Kingston's last remaining donkey house (no donkey now). The cottages share free membership of Bigbury Golf Club (unlimited rounds, practice facilities). Interconnecting door (lockable) between L254 and L255, so if booked together the cottages can accommodate 10.Clematis Cottage is beautifully restored: original beams throughout (some low ceilings), delightful. From a quiet lane, entrance via the old herb garden with patio (table/chairs, barbecue) to entrance with tiled floor (washing machine, tumble drier); cloakroom (loo/washbasin). Three steps (low ceiling) down to newly fitted kitchen/dining room (dishwasher, microwave, freezer, larder fridge) with butler sink, beams, small dresser, old pine dining table. Lovely large living room with Victorian open fireplace, TV/DVD, DVDs. The West Country region

The South Hams: southernmost Devon; between the river Dart and river Tamar and south of Dartmoor, lush farmland and wooded river valleys turning to beautiful estuaries, its coast very beautiful and remarkably well preserved – sandy beaches and mighty cliffs between those estuaries, amazingly little sprawling modern ugliness. Inland too, away from main roads, it remains surprisingly peaceful.

Among special coastal places are Dartmouth; sheltered Blackpool Sands; Slapton's long curve of pebble beach and nature reserve lagoon; the cliffs about Start Point and Prawle Point, Bolt Head and Bolt Tail; East Portlemouth's beach and Salcombe's location and views; Thurlestone proving that family seaside places don't need to be brash; Bigbury's huge sands and the fun of getting to Burgh Island; waterside, oak-wood-sheltered Noss Mayo/Newton Ferrers; many others, less easy of access, are for you to discover.

Kingsbridge and Totnes, both old, attractive and small, are the towns at the area's heart; Plymouth – the West Country's biggest town, with Naval base, ferry port, theatre, cinemas, history, Hoe (great views) and Barbican (where the life is) – is on the area's edge. Dartington Hall is an arts centre (films, plays, music, dance) with lovely gardens. Pleasure cruisers ply the Kingsbridge estuary and Dart and Tamar rivers.

Kingsbridge

Kingston: remarkably off-the-beaten-track little village (good pub, church) with lots of pretty houses, a mile from the river Erme's beautiful wooded estuary and good sandy Wonwell beach. St Ann's Chapel (PO/shop), 1 mile. More fine sandy beaches and golf at Bigbury-on-Sea/Burgh Island, 4 miles; for shops, pretty Modbury, 3½ miles.
