Further details indoors

This cottage welcomes people who enjoy and value comprehensive and good quality facilities whilst on holiday. Assessed as five star standard for the past four years (not formally star rated as of 2013), we place great importance upon high standards of cleanliness within the cottage, and comfort.

The stone walls of the cottage are up to fifteen inches (45cm) thick, and wifi reception may be varied, depending upon your service provider. 'Old' technology e.g. laptop works better than smartphones!

Further details outdoors

The cottage has the great benefit of off road parking for up to three/four vehicles, or a small boat as desired. There is a shared inner courtyard suitable for sitting, and also a private, narrow garden terrace (adjacent to the road). The village hall field is about 200m away, with children's play equipment.

Start Bay coastline, including Slapton Ley, is nearly two miles away. There is extensive, mainly National Trust owned South West Coastal Pathway accessible within two miles. The market town of Kingsbridge is just under five miles distant, and Dartmouth is another historic port town, accessible along the most magnificently beautiful coastal route, and approximately ten miles to the east.

The West Country region

South Devon is a largely rural area edged by the sea, and combined provides spectacular scenery. Less commercialised than many parts of the United Kingdom, Devon retains a gentle outlook on life assisted by the generally milder climate.

Kingsbridge

Chillington is an example of a Devon 'long village', located on the eastern flank of Kingsbridge about four miles along the coastal route to Dartmouth. In the centre of this village is Allerdale Farmhouse, of which The Pound House is a part.

Allerdale Farmhouse, a grade II listed Georgian former farmhouse, is referred to in the Domesday Book and is a landmark property of the South Hams. Much of the traditional Devon long village of Chillington is believed to have grown around, and upon the land that was associated with the farm. In modern history, the farmhouse was taken over by the American army during the second world war whilst the Normandy landing operation was rehearsed at Start Bay.

Most recently the farmhouse is remembered for its last farmer owners, a family comprising two brothers (so similar they were often referred to as 'the twins') and their sister, the local community midwife. They lived in a largely unchanged house for decades, until the 1990s. A major programme of restoration and modernisation produced Allerdale Farmhouse substantially as it is today.

"Amazing holiday house, excellent location, and a very helpful and kind host!"

We stayed in The Pound House for a week in early August. We are a family of four who flew in from the U.S. with 12 and 15 year old children, never having been to Devon before. The booking process wa… More

Season's greetings to the wonderful family who travelled all the way from the States for your summer vacation here. We felt privileged to be your hosts, and we are delighted that The Pound House plentifully met your needs. Thank you also for the beautiful hand-crafted thank you card you left - this is now retained in our guest book for all visitors to appreciate. Coincidentally, we write this comment just as another family has arrived from the States for Christmas. Best wishes to you all.

"Fabulous week in great accommodation"

Another great week in Devon and our accommodation didn't disappoint. The owners were friendly and helpful and the property was spacious, clean and comfortable. The local shop was only a minute's walk. We recommend this cottage.

Many thanks for our first online review - even though we've been providing the same high quality accommodation for seven years! It was great having your three generation family to stay.
