About the home

¾ mile from one of the pubs in Stokenham, a very private, detached cottage converted from a barn at the end of 100 yards of its own hardcore track. There is a large garden all around it, a tiny brook trickling along one edge and fields beyond.
Stable doors to lobby (washing machine, tumble drier) and ground-floor loo (washbasin), into very roomy, smart open-plan living/dining/kitchen (dishwasher, microwave, fridge-freezer, double-oven electric range) with central work island, granite worktops, TV/DVD/video and glazed doors to patio (table/chairs). Stairs up to two bedrooms, both with TV/DVD – a double (5' zip-linked bed or 2'6" twin) with en suite bathroom (suite plus bath-shower) and doors to small balcony with steps down, and a twin (2'6" beds or 5' zip-linked double) with en suite shower-room (suite). A few more stairs up to a big attic double bedroom (TV/DVD) in the eaves with 5' bed at one end and a magnificent raised antique copper bath, loo and washbasin at the other end. Spring water. A wonderfully quiet, private spot with easy access to the main South Hams road.

The West Country / Devon region

The South Hams: southernmost Devon; between the river Dart and river Tamar and south of Dartmoor, lush farmland and wooded river valleys turning to beautiful estuaries, its coast very beautiful and remarkably well preserved – sandy beaches and mighty cliffs between those estuaries, amazingly little sprawling modern ugliness. Inland too, away from main roads, it remains surprisingly peaceful.
Among special coastal places are Dartmouth; sheltered Blackpool Sands; Slapton's long curve of pebble beach and nature reserve lagoon; the cliffs about Start Point and Prawle Point, Bolt Head and Bolt Tail; East Portlemouth's beach and Salcombe's location and views; Thurlestone proving that family seaside places don't need to be brash; Bigbury's huge sands and the fun of getting to Burgh Island; waterside, oak-wood-sheltered Noss Mayo/Newton Ferrers; many others, less easy of access, are for you to discover.
Kingsbridge and Totnes, both old, attractive and small, are the towns at the area's heart; Plymouth – the West Country's biggest town, with Naval base, ferry port, theatre, cinemas, history, Hoe (great views) and Barbican (where the life is) – is on the area's edge. Dartington Hall is an arts centre (films, plays, music, dance) with lovely gardens. Pleasure cruisers ply the Kingsbridge estuary and Dart and Tamar rivers.

The Kingsbridge / Stokenham area

Stokenham: village (church, two pubs) 1½ miles from the huge stretch of beach at Slapton Sands and the wildlife reserve at Slapton Ley. Kingsbridge, 6 miles. Dartmouth (town), 9 miles.
