L197 - The Creamery
Cottage | 1 bedrooms | sleeps 2
¾ mile from the pub at Kingston, a gorgeous cottage converted from extremely handsome Victorian farm buildings, once a creamery for an old farm (no farm now). It faces out over its own enclosed garden with long views over lush, undulating farmland, semi-detached to the friendly owners' equally handsome house. A grapevine-shaded patio with table/chairs, barbecue, elegant sculpture and neat topiary give a distinctly Italian feel to this sun-filled garden. Glazed doors from garden to elegant living room (TV/DVD) with 'living flame' gas fire; ground-floor double bedroom (5' bed) with en suite shower-room (suite) and door to garden. Stairs up to piano room with comfy sofas and views and large kitchen/dining room (dishwasher, washer-drier, microwave) with walnut worktops, butler sink and glazed doors (balustrade) with those lovely views; both rooms have high beamed ceilings. No children, except pre-crawling babies. A stunning hide-away for a romantic break.

The West Country region
The South Hams: southernmost Devon; between the river Dart and river Tamar and south of Dartmoor, lush farmland and wooded river valleys turning to beautiful estuaries, its coast very beautiful and remarkably well preserved – sandy beaches and mighty cliffs between those estuaries, amazingly little sprawling modern ugliness. Inland too, away from main roads, it remains surprisingly peaceful.
Among special coastal places are Dartmouth; sheltered Blackpool Sands; Slapton's long curve of pebble beach and nature reserve lagoon; the cliffs about Start Point and Prawle Point, Bolt Head and Bolt Tail; East Portlemouth's beach and Salcombe's location and views; Thurlestone proving that family seaside places don't need to be brash; Bigbury's huge sands and the fun of getting to Burgh Island; waterside, oak-wood-sheltered Noss Mayo/Newton Ferrers; many others, less easy of access, are for you to discover.
Kingsbridge and Totnes, both old, attractive and small, are the towns at the area's heart; Plymouth – the West Country's biggest town, with Naval base, ferry port, theatre, cinemas, history, Hoe (great views) and Barbican (where the life is) – is on the area's edge. Dartington Hall is an arts centre (films, plays, music, dance) with lovely gardens. Pleasure cruisers ply the Kingsbridge estuary and Dart and Tamar rivers.
Kingston: remarkably off-the-beaten-track little village (good pub, church) with lots of pretty houses, a mile from the river Erme's beautiful wooded estuary and good sandy Wonwell beach. St Ann's Chapel (PO/shop), 1 mile. More fine sandy beaches and golf at Bigbury-on-Sea/Burgh Island, 4 miles; for shops, pretty Modbury, 3½ miles.
