Ballinahinch
About the home
The House at Ballinahinch is about 100 years old and was originally two very small farm workers cottages. About 10 years ago the property was modernized and two bedrooms and an extra bathroom added. So now it’s a traditional 2 bedroom cottage with a few mod cons and features. It is in a small Hamlet with a few houses that are mainly farms but a few modern homes have sprung up. The house is very private especially at the back. You are not overlooked and have no immediate neighbours. The surrounding area is rolling hills and is great walking country and nearby Kilfinnane is a walking centre and the local office can give you lots of information about where to go and what to do

How the house works
Like every old house it has its character and peculiarities which are easy to manage if you know how.
The Kitchen
As you come in through the front door there is a small porch for coats, boots and shoes. This opens up into the big kitchen which has the solid fuel burning stove and the dinning table. To the right is the small kitchen that contains the cooker fridge etc. It is small but functional. The cooker switch is on the wall above the cooker which needs to be turned on before using. The fridge and the washing machine are self explanatory. The only peculiar thing is the hot water in this part of the house. There is a switch above the sink which needs to be turned on. This takes about 10 mins to heat up and will give you about a sink full for washing up . then it needs to be left to fill up again. A bit strange but manageable.
Next to the Kitchen is the small bathroom that has a functioning sink and toilet. There is an electric shower but that is not working at present.
In the Kitchen there is also stairs to a sleeping platform that has a sofa bed and a very old computer which still works although it is dial up and takes an age to work but you are welcome to try, if you have the patience.
The Big Kitchen is self explanatory and has a working microwave oven in the corner. The stove works best with smokeless coal which can be bought from local shops or supermarkets. It is very efficient and if filled at night will burn throughout the night and just needs stoking in the morning and keeps that part of the house warm. In summer, using it is optional.
The Front room is self explanatory and this is centrally heated and also has a large fireplace where you can make an open fire, it makes the room very cosy even in summer. If you do use it please keep the fireguard in front of the fire as embers can spit and burn the carpet. The Sofa is very large and comfortable and can be used as a bed for one person. It also has a TV and CD player which is self-explanatory and there are CDs and books that you are welcome to use.
In the small bureau there are detailed maps of the surrounding area which if you like map reading you are welcome to use ( as long as you put them back)
Going through the end door you come into the hallway and the two bedrooms and the 2nd bathroom. In the middle of the hallway there is an airing cupboard that houses the water heater and the controls for the central heating system as well as towels and clean sheets if you require. The controls are pretty straight forward and has a switch for constant heating and water as well as a timing switch. It will be set but if you get chilly feel free to turn the heating on as you require it.
The Bedrooms are straightforward and the back room has a futon that you can use. The walk-in shower room is easy to operate. The temperature on the shower is set but adjustable manually. There is a scraper to push the water away as it can gather at one end……. A peculiarity of the builder!
There is also a door that leads out to the small private courtyard that is a nice sun trap (if the sun ever shines!) with lovely views of the Ballyhoura Hills and the Galtee Mountains in the distance. There are benches outside and deck chairs just inside the door. If you are blessed with great weather there is also an umbrella to shade you from the sun. There are locked gates which I suggest are left locked and you can get into the garden through the house

Around the area
Ballinahinch is a small, very quiet place and is mainly farmland and a great area for walking. There is a small shop/supermarket in Elton (CREEDS) which provides most of the basics including newspapers and as he is local, I like to support him by giving him the business.
There are a few towns nearby that are worth a visit.
Kilmallock
This is about 5 miles away and is a medieval town dating back to the 12th Century which was once a walled town and still has two of its original stone gates. It also has wonderful remains of a Dominican Priory that was very important in its day. Now it is a small town with all the amenities you could need including a Bank, Post Office, Supermarket and even supports a small theatre which only has plays and music events every so often, but well worth a visit. There are couple of places to eat, a good pub Fitzgeralds and a decent Chinese Restaurant the Golden Mill.
Kilfinane
This is a small town on top of a hill and has a great array of pubs and the walking centre and not much else!! But it is a sleepy town but sometimes there is live music . Try and get into Kellehers Bar (the red frontage and a bit dirty looking…..but great atmosphere and peculiar décor that needs to be seen to be believed….!)
Lough Gur
This is a very lovely lake about 5 miles away and is a stunning place to take a quiet walk or a picnic. It dates back to the Bronze age and has a stone circle and a castle as well as a tourist office and a reconstructed village so worth a visit while you are in the area.
You are also in striking distance of the Glen of Aherlow, which is one of the most beautiful places in this part of the country. It sits at the base of the Galtee Mountains and is fantastic walking country and if you are serious walkers you could always try the Galtees themselves. But ask about clothing and routes at the Kilfinnane walking centre as the weather can be fairly temperamental.
There are several guide books around the house that you are welcome to use if you want to travel further afield. Killarney and The Ring of Kerry are within a couple of hours drive and are worth the visit if you have the time. West Cork is a beautiful coastline but does require a bit of time to explore.
