The Limerick / Tipperary / County Tipperary region

County Tipperary was the first Irish county to be established in the 13th century and is sometimes referred to as the Premier County, a description attributable to Thomas Davis, Editor of The Nation newspaper in the 1840s as a tribute to the nationalistic feeling in Tipperary and said that "where Tipperary leads, Ireland follows". The locals can be recognised by their pronunciation of the name as they silence the "e" as in Tipp-rary.

Tipperary is famous for its horse breeding industry and is the home of Coolmore Stud, which is the largest thoroughbred breeding operation in the world. The County forms a large part of the Golden Vale (or Vein) of Munster, boasting a rich and fertile agricultural landscape. The County particularly nurtures the ancient game of hurling and its teams have regularly been champions of Ireland since the 19th century.

Killoscully area

Newport is approximately 8km from Birdhill. The Mulcair River flows through Newport, basically splitting the town into two. Newport is located amongst the Silvermines mountain range.

There is a post office there as well as a bank - Aillied Irish Bank. Two ATM machines are located in the town, one in Whelan's Gala Supermarket and the other in Ryan's Supermarket Bank of Ireland.

Within 2 miles of the town there is the beauty spot of Clare Glens. A wooded area through which a river winds its way through. A great place for a walk, it is a gorge that has many waterfalls and provides excellent "adventure" walks. The wooded nature trail has been mapped out in a looped course format, which opens up all areas of the Glens to the visitor. The river Clare forms the boundary between Co. Limerick and Co. Tipperary and is located 15 minutes drive from the house.

Bunratty Castle and Folk Park is one of Ireland's top visitor attractions. A visit to the castle, the most complete and authentic medieval fortress in Ireland, and the Folk Park nearby, is a wonderful experience for all the family and is less that 1 hour drive from the house.

Dolphins off the Coast of Co. Clare - tours leave from the harbour town of Kilrush, a little more than an hour away.

Roscrea Castle is also steeped in history and legend. King John allegedly built it in 1213. At one corner is a tall rectangular tower with a fine vault and a fireplace on the second floor. The upper floors have an unusual selection of passages and stairs leading to various defensive positions, but some parts of the uppermost storey date from the 16th century. The curtain wall surrounding the enclosure is reached from the first floor of the tower. In the wall of the castle facing on to the street there are holes, which indicate the place where the drawbridge to the castle once stood. Dominating the heart of Roscrea town, this 13th century state-of-the-art royal castle and definitely well worth a visit!

The Lime Kiln is situated a short distance walk from Killoscully village. In years gone by, the people of this area used lime to fertilize their land. Indeed, it is still often used today, however the way in which it is acquired has changed somewhat!
